WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Lead by undefeated performances by Zach Gwinn, Keith Stednitz, Cody Spinks, and Brady Estep, the Alderson Broaddus wrestling team was able to pick up victories in two out of three dual meets wrestled on Saturday.

"I'm happy the way we were able to rebound after the Gettysburg match," said head coach Sam Gardner. "We were very flat and we wrestled very poorly against them. They were very controlled and they rode exceptionally well. We didn't react defensively on our feet very well, and we didn't fight like I had hoped when we encountered adversity. I'll take the blame for not forcing us to warm-up enough before hand, which might explain why we were flat. After that we regrouped, did some soul searching, and had performances that were much more in line with our capabilities."

In the first round, the Battlers fell to Gettysburg University by a score of 26-14. AB wrestlers won four matches in the dual. Gwinn scored an 8-5 decision at 149 pounds, while Keith Stednitz used his style of punishing riding to score 12 unanswered points in the third period to earn a 16-6 major decision.

Senior Cody Spinks moved to 197 on the day to fill in for an injured athlete and was dominant in his season debut at that weight winning 8-4 over Camden Stoops, a 20+ match winner at heavyweight the previous season. Fellow Musselman high school graduate Brady Estep converted a single leg into a first period fall to end the match.

The Battlers rebounded in their second bout of the day scoring four falls in their match against Penn State University Mont Alto. Senior Cody Buchanan used a near side cradle to earn a fall at 133 at the one minute mark, followed by fellow Senior Micah Powell's 1:17 fall at 141 pounds.

Gwinn continued his hot start to the year at 149 converting several low level takedowns to take a 7-3 victory. Jason West earned a 13-3 major decision at 157, and Stednitz used a stifling style to get the win while moving up to 174 lbs.Sam Solomon, seeing his first action of the year after returning to the mat from football, scored a pair of takedowns that lead to a body press and a first period fall.

Brady Estep followed the same script as earlier, using a high single leg takedown to dump his opponent to the mat to score the fall while Spinks and freshman Travis Harrington added forfeit victories to the team 47-3 victory.

"We had a few injuries and illnesses that may have hampered us, but if we want to be a great team we'll have to overcome those hurdles," said Gardner. "Our final two matches of the day showed how well we can wrestle when we are wrestling well."

In the day's final bout AB had their most dominant performance of the year, scoring a 55-0 win over the university of Maryland Baltimore County. Buchanan had four takedowns before he put his opponent away at 4:18 of the second period. Powell earned a 12-4 major, while Gwinn received a forfeit, and West used a knee pick on his feet to take his opponent directly to his back to score a fall at the 3:58 mark.

Anthony Gamble earned his first dual meet victory of the year, and first career riding time point, filling in at 165, while at 174, Stednitz scored a fall in a minute and a half, and Solomon had a 55 second pin at 184. Estep went 3-for-3 in first period falls, this time using an elbow pass to a single leg attack to put his opponent down on the mat, earning the fall at the 1:24 mark. To close things out, Harrington and Spinks again received forfeits.

"Brady was fantastic today. I have no doubt that he'll jump to another level after today's performance," said Gardner. "I was happy to see Sam Solomon's varsity debut go the way it did, and Zach Gwinn is really being very consistent this year and is doing a great job for us.Our seniors were strong as well. We did a few good things today, and we have time to recover, train, and make adjustments before our next competition."

AB returns to action on December 3rd when it travels to Grantham, Pa. to compete in the Petrofes Invite.
