AB Scores Win Over Ohio Valley

PHILIPPI, W.Va. -- The Alderson Broaddus wrestling team closed out its dual meet season with a 38-11 victory over Ohio Valley Saturday afternoon at Rex Pyles Arena.
With the Battlers leading just 12-11 after three straight match wins for the Fighting Scots, the Battlers got a much needed lift from Keith Stednitz. Stednitz dominated Stewart Morris scoring a 17-1 technical fall at the 4:26 mark at 165. Davis Solak was tied at two late in the second period at 174, but got a takedown just as time expired to lift him to a 4-3 decision over Austin Antill giving AB a 20-11 advantage.
"OVU wrestled really well today," said AB head coach Sam Gardner. "They have several excellent wrestlers and they matched up with us well early. Fortunately, our middle and upper weights are mentally tough and aren't affected by what happens before they step on the mat. Keith [Stednitz] did what we expect from him , he punishes from the top. Davis [Solak] wasn't moving the way I wished he would, but he is tough and stayed in the match even when it wasn't easy."
Jonathan Sigley accepted a forfeit at 184 before Cody Spinks earned a pin with just 7 seconds remaining in the first period at 197. AB closed out the match with Nick Nester taking a forfeit to set the final.
"Cody [Spinks] is simply outstanding," said Gardner. "Time and again he comes through for us. That was a great pin."
The Battlers jumped out 12-0 with a pair of forfeits by OVU at 125 and 133. The Fighting Scots got back-to-back major decisions with Ryan Bennet winning 12-3 over Micah Powell and Nicholoz Varazashvlivilli earning a 19-5 major over Chris Brent. Sam Phillips scored a 10-5 decision for OVU at 157 to finish out the scoring for the Fighting Scots.
AB finishes the dual season with a 10-4 record and will compete in the Super Regional Tournament Feb. 27.
