Spinks Advances to Division II National Championships with 3rd Place Finish at East Regionals

February 26-27, 2016
NCAA DII Super Regional East
Mercyhurst University, Erie PA

ERIE, Pa. – Alderson Broaddus University junior Cody Spinks finished in third place and will advance to the NCAA Division II National Championships as the Battlers placed 10th overall as a team on day two of the NCAA East Super Regionals held at Mercyhurst University.

"I am so pumped up for Cody Spinks right now," said head coach Sam Gardner. "He had a great tournament. He was dominant in punching his ticket to the NCAA tournament. In five wins he scored two falls, a technical fall, a major decision, and one regular decision. When you can score those kinds of points in the toughest super region in the country it shows that you can compete on a national level."

Spinks started his day by pinning Ron King of LIU Post in 3:53. In the next round of consolations, Spinks won a tough battle over Sawyer Leppla 8-7 to advance to the third-place match. Spinks went on to top No.3 seed Collin Schildt with a major decision victory 14-3.

"I'm fired up to see him fight to become AB's first wrestling All-American in 2 weeks," said Gardner. "There is no doubt he has the ability to do it."

With the finish, Spinks will compete in the NCAA Division II National Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D. in March 11th and 12th.

Logan Shurina advanced to day two of the Super Regionals but pulled out of his consolation match vs. No.5 seed Adam Martz of Shippensburg to close out his tournament.

Keith Stednitz also advanced to Saturday's action by topping No.7 seed Andrew Doak from Seton Hill in a 15-0 technical fall in the second period. Stednitz dropped his next match to No.4 Juwan Edmond from Notre Dame College in a 6-1 decision to send him into the 5th place match. Stednitz lost a tough battle 4-3 in a decision to No.5 Demadre Turner from West Liberty to place him sixth on the afternoon.

"This was a really big weekend for our team," said Gardner. "We did a number of "firsts" for our new program. First time we got three through to the second day of the regional tournament, first place winners [Spinks 3rd, Stednitz 6th], first top 10 regional finish for the team. Every guy on our roster contributed to helping us reach that next level. I am so proud of them, and feel lucky that I get to sit in their corners when they represent AB."
