Cox, Sita, Shurina Lead AB Wrestling to Split at WV Tech

BECKLEY, W.Va. — The Alderson Broaddus wrestling team split matches with Reinhardt University and West Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon.

In the opening match of the day, the Battlers fell to Reinhardt 38-15. Earning match victories for AB in the opener was Curtis, Logan Shurina, and Gino Sita.

At 133, Cox pinned Jordan Pitt early in the second period to even the match at six after two matches. Later on trailing 23-6, Shurina picked up the second victory of the day for the Battlers as he earned a major decision victory to pull within 23-10.

AB's final victory of the day came from freshman Gino Sita when he won his 28th match of the season, an 18-3 technical fall over Garrett Klinger, to cut the lead to just 23-15. Down the stretch, Reinhardt picked up back-to-back wins at 184 and 197 to pull ahead 32-15 and closed the match with a forfeit win at 285 to end the opening match of the day.

In the second match against West Virginia Tech, the Battlers picked up a victory, 38-16, to split the two dual matches.

At 125 pounds, Breandan Coughlin opened the dual with a pin of Neko Aquilina in 47 seconds to put AB on top 6-0. After Paul Steger lost at 133, Cox recorded his second victory of the day, this time at 141 pounds as he finished with a pin with 39 seconds left in the first period.

After Tech pulled with two a 12-10 with a victory at 149, the Battlers took the next five matches to pull away. Derek Schmitt recorded a pin at 157 early in the third period to extend the lead to 18-10 for AB and Logan Shurina followed with a 2-1 decision to make it 21-10.

At 174, Sita won his 29th match of the year with a 17-1 technical fall as Sam Solomon won by default at 184 and Alex Eaton recorded a pin with 18 seconds to play at 197. The Battlers return to the mat this Thursday at 7 p.m. when they host Ohio Valley University at Rex Pyles Arena for their final dual match of the season.
