AB Wrestling Tops OVU 24-19 on Senior Night

PHILIPPI, W.Va. — Behind match victories from Gino Sita and Alex Eaton, the Alderson Broaddus wrestling team defeated Ohio Valley University 24-19 on Thursday night at Rex Pyles Arena.

After OVU took the opening match at 125 with a 7-3 decision, the Battlers won three matches in a row by forfeit to take an 18-3 lead. Curtis Cox recorded the win at 133 while Parker Brown got the forfeit at 141 and Daniel Drayton at 149.

At 157 pounds, Sam Phillips recorded the win for OVU, by the way of a 9-6 decision, to cut the lead to 18-6. Then in the ensuing match, it made it 18-9 when T.J. Lambiotte won in a tight 7-4 decision over AB senior Logan Shurina at 165.

Freshman Gino Sita wrestled No.6 Dalton George at 174 in the next match as the two wrestled a tight first period. In the second, Sita put George on his back and nearly recoded a pin but got four near-fall points to take a five-point lead. Sita maintained his lead and took control of the match for the 11-6 victory. A season ago, George was a 2017 NCAA Division II National semifinalist and is currently the region's top-wrestler and is No.6 overall in Division II.

With the victory at 174, Sita gave the Battlers a 21-9 advantage. In the next match, Sam Solomon wrestled Ali Capobianco of OVU as the 184 pounder from the Fightings Scots recorded a 17-9 major decision victory to pull within eight at 21-13. At 197, Tyler Koreski accepted a forfeit to cut the lead to 21-19 in favor of AB.

In Tuesday's final match, Alex Eaton of AB wrestled Ben Willard from OVU. In the second period trailing 2-1, Willard picked up four-near fall points to take a 5-2 lead. After Eaton recorded a takedown, he returned the favor in the third period, this time getting a near-fall himself to pull ahead 8-5. In the final seconds of the match leading 8-6, Eaton clinched the 285-pound match with a takedown to win 10-6 and clinch the third dual win of the season for AB.

Prior to Thursday's match, the Battlers honored their two seniors, Logan Shurina and Andrew Forino.

AB will return to the mat on Sunday when it competes in the USCAA National Invitational at Penn State University.
