AB Sweeps Green Terror Duals

November 21, 2015
AT McDaniel College, Westminster MD

WESTMINSTER, Md. – The Alderson Broaddus wrestling team finished the day 3-0 as they completed the sweep of UMBC, Penn State Mont Alto, and Gettysburg Saturday afternoon at the Green Terror Duals on the campus of McDaniel College.

"I'm very proud of our guys today," said head coach Sam Gardner. "We knew going in to this competition we were giving up a forfeit at 133, but when Micah got tweaked in his first match we were now going to be down 12 to nothing to start our other two bouts. Being down 12 zip with only eight bouts to go really eliminates any margin for error, and the guys really responded."

The Battlers improved to 8-0 on the season with the three victories.

In the opening match of the morning, AB defeated the University of Maryland Baltimore County 42-4. In the dual, Michael Powell, Chris Brent, Keith Stednitz, and Cody Spinks each recorded pins for the Battlers. In 133, Cody Buchanan defeated Logan Tritto 12-3 while Josiah Solak had a tech fall at 184 and Tyler Arnett won 9-4 at the heavyweight position.

"I have to say that Cody Buchanan was really a tremendous lead-off man today," said Gardner. "He scored bonus points in all three matches, but his pin against Gettysburg was really a feat. He was down by three points with about a minute to go when he shot in on a single leg, lifted his opponent in the air, and put him right on his back to secure the fall. He showed great heart and wrestled hard."

In its next dual, AB squeaked out a 24-18 win over PSU Mont Alto. Recording victories for the Battlers were Cody Buchanan, Jason West, Logan Shurina, Brent, Spinks, and Solak. After trailing early in the match 12-6, AB took five of the next seven weight classes to come away with the win.

In the final bout of the day, the Battlers defeated Gettysburg. After trailing 15-6 early, Stednitz, Shurina, Spinks, and the Solak brothers won five straight matches to clinch the match for AB.

"I'm really pleased with the Solak brothers," said Gardner. "Both Josiah and Davis had strong performances today, continuing their season long trend. Big picture, we are starting to develop a recognizable personality when we compete as a team. That's good to see. Now we need to recover a bit, see our families and friends, and then get back in to training. We've had a strong start to the year, but we need to prepare for the exciting challenges ahead of us."

With the eight wins so far, the Battlers have topped its win total from a season to go.

AB will return to the mats December 4th when they host Wheeling Jesuit at 7 p.m. for its first home match of the season.
