Wheeling Jesuit Wrestling Falls to Millersville

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit wrestlers squared off against the Marauders of Millersville University in just their third home event in program history on Friday night in the McDonough Center. The Cardinals took home four wins, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a slow start and an experienced Marauders outfit, falling 12-19 in the dual.

“It was a little bit of Deja Vu tonight in terms of just being some small but critical mistakes away from winning matches that would give us a dual win,” said WJU head Coach Sean Doyle. We knew coming in that there would be 7 or 8 matches that would be close, and they were, but we just lost a few early that we couldn’t recover from.”

In the 125lb class, WJU’s Bradley Kakos started off the match with a shot and scored the first takedown of the night in the first period. Kakos chose down at the start of the second period while the score was 2-6. In the third, Kakos gave up back points, and the end of the match concluded with Brad losing the match 2-11.

The 133lb bout started off with Scott Lopez taking the first points by takedown. The match was a textbook wrestling match with a constant battle back and forth. The match resulted in a Thomas Nulty (Millersville) victory after he reversed and rode Lopez for the third and final round ending the match with a final score of 6-10.

WJU’s Damon Outward and David Charles were even in the first period of the 141-pounders with the score tied at zero. The second round was fairly even through a technical match on their feet. Charles was able to score a takedown after a long battle at the end of the match, and Millersville won 3-0.

In #149 WJU’s Jonathan Barret and MU’s Donald Minnier were evenly matched to start off the first round. Barret scored the first points of the match with a takedown in the second period. The third round resulted in a tie bringing the match to over time where Barret won with a quick take down resulting in the night’s first win for the Cardinals at 7-5.

Jesuit’s John Gershom and Zach Wawrzyniak-Bush battled at the 157 pound weight class. The first period was scoreless after a two minuet round. The second period was back and forth between the two opponents, at the end of the round the score was 2-1. In a close third period takedown fall Gershom fell to his opponent Wawrzyniak-Bush 3-4.

The middleweight bout at 165 was well matched between Jesuit’s TJ Smith and Millersville Zach Pincus. Smith was awarded the first points with a takedown. The second period was wrestled mostly from the neutral position, and no points were scored. Pincus chose down to start the third period and escaped bring the score to 2-2. Pincus then scored the last takedown of the match leaving the match at a 4-3 Millersville victory.

At #174, the wrestlers at this weight class showed heart, and good hard wrestling. In the first round WJU’s Sawyer Leppla was taken down by MU’s Mitchell Ball early and proceeded to maintain the score 2-0. The second period started off with Ball leading a score 2-0. Leppla was able to pull-off two last minute back points to claw back into the match. The third period finished with Leppa winning with ride time, 3-2 over Millersville.

At #184 Shane Gilmore started the match for Millersville with first takedown. The first round was action packed with both grapplers going back and forth. Ryan Winslow chose bottom to begin the first round and quickly reversed Gilmore and rode him out for the remainder of the round. Gilmore chose bottom to begin the third period and reversed Winslow. Winslow then reversed back leading to a Gilmore escape. Ryan then took down Shane and rode him out for the rest of the round resulting in a Cardinal victory of 9-10.

At #197, WJU’s Max Lacey shook up the crowd with a first round throw from his feet against his opponent Aram Moffitt. Moffitt was able to get an escape, and then take Lacey back down to his back receiving 6 points. The second round was a tough battle that didn’t go to the ground the score remained 2-6. The third round Lacey attempted to throw Moffitt to get the five points that he needed. The score remained the same however awarding Moffitt the 2-6 victory.

In the 285lb heavyweights, WJU’s Corey Seigfried started off the match with the first takedown. Siegfried then cut Ryan Nielsen and took him down again and rode him for the remainder of the round. In the second Siegfried chose neutral. The two wrestlers battled the whole round on their feet with no points awarded to either wrestler. Nielsen chose bottom for the third period and escaped. Time ran out resulting in a 2-4 Cardinal victory.
