Cardinal Wrestlers Come From Behind To Take Fourth Win

February 1, 2041

Greensburg, Penn. – The tide turned for the Wheeling Jesuit wrestling squad at the 165 lb class when Hans Rogerson reversed the fortunes of the team, putting the momentum squarely on the side of the Cardinals, and leading to a big 24-19 win over Seton Hill on Saturday.

The win marks the fourth dual win for the Cardinals in the young programs history, no small feat with a squad comprised of freshmen.

Things weren’t looking so good for the Cardinals when Seton Hill proceeded to rattle off four straight wins in the 133, 141, 149, and 157 lb classes, and it looked as though it would be another harsh lesson in college wrestling for the team that, at this point last year, was still in high school.

Then, Rogerson took the mat at 165, and the fortunes of the Cardinals changed when he reversed his opponent for a win-by-fall win at 2:50.

According to Coach Sean Doyle, the big pin swung the momentum to the side of the Cardinals, and WJU went on to sweep the rest of the matches.

“It was a really exciting night, especially for such a young group,” said Doyle. “It’s just a big credit to the guys, to win four meets as a first year program is truly amazing. We’re at the hard grind part of the season right now, as a coach you’re really excited to see the guys respond to what we’re trying to do and grow as athletes.”

Following Rogerson’s pin, Sawyer Leppla scored four points in the last 10 seconds of the match to take a 6-4 decision, and lift the hopes of the Cardinals even further.

Ryan Winslow continued his winning ways after recovering from injury, bouncing back from a 4-1 deficit to win 14-8. Max Lacey picked up a win in the 197lb match as well, defeating SHU’s Morris Lawson 8-4.

It would all come down to the Heavyweights if WJU were to pull off the comeback, and The Cardinals’ Corey Siegfried answered the challenge taking a 3-2 decision and giving WJU the come-from-behind victory.
