Notes from Coach Doyle

December 26, 2014

This semester brought a number of great accomplishments for our young program:
1) 4-1 start to our season
2) Our first dual meet victory over rival West Liberty in dominating fashion
3) Against our in-state opponents (Alderson Broaddus, Ohio Valley, West Liberty), we went a combined 25-5 in dual meet action!
4) Top 15 team finish at the prestigious Midwest Classic
5) Competing on the grandest stage in sports at the Grapple at the Garden in New York City and picking up a 52-0 victory.

Next stop, the historical Virginia Duals in Hampton Roads, Virginia on January 9-10. Second semester will be a great opportunity for our guys to see top notch competition in preparation of Regionals and the National Tournament. For a summary of the Midwest Classic, as well as overall records for all wrestlers read below. Enjoy the New Year and see you in January!

125

Dustin Warner (17-5, 3 falls, 5th W&J, 3rd Mt.Union, 5th Midwest Classic)
Dustin has had a fantastic freshman campaign capped off by a 5th place finish at the Midwest Classic. He defeated a number of notable wrestlers including a few with national recognition. If Dustin can continue to get bigger over the next 12 weeks and keep improving at the rate that he has, look out come March!

Jerrid Whaling (2-4, 1 fall, 7th Mt. Union)

Brad Kakos (1-4, Captain)

133

Nolan Whitely (12-4, 3rd W&J, 2nd Mt. Union)
Nolan made great strides this semester and as noted in previous emails,, became our first ever nationally ranked wrestlers and #1 regionally ranked wrestler. Nolan has big goals so when he doesn't win every match, he's usually hard on himself. Nolan knows that he needs to continue to get out of his comfort zone in the neutral position if he hopes to compete in St. Louis. I trust he'll keep doing this and be competing to get on that podium in a few months.

Tyler Knul (4-4, 5th Mt. Union)

Jaylen Hill (5-6, 7th Mt.Union)

141

Skyler Terrell (7-4, Captain, 2nd W&J)
After having nearly a year off due to injury, Skyler has come back strong and had mixed results this semester. When I say mixed, I mean only in the win/loss column. He has competed extremely well in almost every match, earning hard fought victories and nearly pulling off big wins over the best in the country. The important wins come this semester and we're confident Skyler is on a good track.

Kollin Clark (4-6, 2 falls)

149

Preston Bowshier (17-6, 3 falls, 5th W&J, 3rd Mt. Union, 8th Midwest Classic) Preston continues to impress in his freshman debut with an 8th place finish at the Midwest Classic. Leading the team in victories, Preston battles hard in every match and as mentioned earlier this year, he is wrestling up a weight class. Preston and Skyler will continue to compete for the 141 lbs spot, and it's very reassuring knowing we have both of these two young men competing for us.

Jonathan Barrett (7-5, Captain, 2 fall, 6th Simonson Open)

Kyle Harris (3-4)

Eric Green (4-6)

Kody Kernan (1-4)

157

Dominick Nania (12-7, Captain, 2 falls, 3rd Mt. Union)
Dom showed great progress from last year throughout this semester and like most of our guys, Dom is in every match regardless of his opponent. He needs to continue to keep focus on wrestling hard and the work he put in over the off season. When he resorts to wrestling easy and scoring big, he loses all of his consistency. It's a process and he's getting there. I know that most of his opponents don't want to see his name as their next opponent.

Peyton Geary (6-7, 1 fall, 8th Mt. Union)

Justin Trent (2-4)

165
Reyse Wallbrown (13-6, 2 falls, 5th Mt. Union)
Another one of our stud freshman in the line up, Reyse had a great first semester wrestling above his normal weight class. Reyse lost two very tough matches at the Midwest Classic to two very high quality opponents. He is always in these matches and as he matures and continues to improve, he'll start winning these battles. Like our great problem at 141, Reyse and Dom will continue to push each other for the 157 lbs spot.

Anthony Smith (3-5)

Na'Codie Barrows (3-4, 1 fall)

Cody Eggers (0-4)

174
Sawyer Leppla (8-7, 4th W&J, 5th Midwest Classic)
We were spoiled last year with Sawyer's performance as a true freshman, racking up 28 victories and have come to expect a lot from him. This year started off a little slow as Sawyer made his way down to 174 but it looks like he's primed for a big semester now. Sawyer made the semi finals of the Midwest Classic before dropping a few matches. In his 5th place bout he defeated the #6 ranked wrestler in the country. Sawyer will continue to settle in and be a contender in March.

Dean Meyer (0-0)

Nate Starkey (2-5, 2 falls)

184

Ryan Winslow (10-3, Captain, 6 falls, 2nd W&J)
As the case with many or most of our guys, Ryan has exceedingly high expectations of himself. Ryan injury defaulted out of the Midwest Classic with an odd medical condition for him and not one that will effect him going forward. Ryan was not happy with his performance and anyone that knows Ryan, knows that this will motivate him even more for the remainder of the season.

Ki Ryder (1-2)

Jared Leasure (0-2)

Nate Hupp (1-2, 1 fall)

197

Maxwell Lacey (7-9, 2nd W&J, 8th Midwest Classic)
Max has been very close all season and we're hoping that his placement in the Midwest Classic is a kick start into the second half of the year. Max won a few battles that he wasn't winning earlier in the season and that he'll need to continue to win to give himself a chance at the post season.

Jacob Haynes (0-4)

285
Corey Siegfried (14-6, 3 falls, 2nd W&J, 5th Mt. Union) Corey is wrestling very well right now and lost in the placement round at the Midwest Classic. The great thing about Corey is that he does the things necessary to be successful. Last year he left WJU weighing 235 and we asked him to come back over 250. He now weighs in around 255 on a regular basis. At this point, Corey knows that he needs to become offensive on his feet and continue to push the pace like he always does. We are already seeing signs of this. Corey is a fantastic young man and will certainly give himself every opportunity to win every match.

Miguel Staples (0-6)

Redshirts/Injured

For those wondering about some names that have been missing, here is a list of wrestlers not listed above:

Scott Lopez- Scott is back in the room and wrestling full go. It is great to have Scott back! He is a great asset to have teaching and battling with our starters. Scott is redshirting this year.

Damon Outward- Damon will look to compete for the first time in January and look for big results out of Damon. Like Scott, having Damon at full go takes our room to another level.

Josh Henderson- Competing as an unattached wrestler 5-5 year to date. Josh will be competing for the team 2nd semester.

Steven Frazier- Competing as an unattached wrestler 0-2 year to date. Steven is redshirting.

Logan Bowman- Competing as an unattached wrestler 2-4 year to date. Logan is redshirting.

Terrance Fanning- Competing as an unattached wrestlers 1-2

Dustin Kuhlwein- Not currently competing (recovering from injury)

Kale Rayner- Not currently competing

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Coach Doyle
