Midwest Classic

December 19-20, 2015
University of Indianapolis, Indianapolis, IN

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - A strong day two performance propelled the Wheeling Jesuit wrestling team to a sixth place finish at the 2015 Midwest Classic. WJU was one of 31 teams competing at the tournament, including 10 of the top 20 Division II programs. The Cardinals finished with 72.5 points.

"This event is the best event on the Division II calendar," head coach Sean Doyle expressed. "It is a great way for our guys to identify where they stand heading into the second semester. We had a number of bright spots with Dustin, Nolan, and Dom but we also learned quite a bit as a team. To reach our goals we have a lot of improvement needed by every individual. At this point, I'm hoping the guys can relax, enjoy some time with family, and appreciate the blessings they each have."

The Cardinals began the day in 10th place with 44 team points. Nolan Whitely and Dustin Warner both wrestled in championship matches, while Dominick Nania advanced through the consolation bracket and finished in third place. Whitely and Warner both finished in second place.

Nolan Whitely advanced to the finals after a 17-7 major decision. Dustin Warner won his match by a 7-2 decision to also advance into the finals. Whitely recorded a late takedown, but lost the 133lb championship bout 9-6 to two-time national qualifier Martin Ramirez of Adams State. Warner lost by a 3-0 decision against two-time All-American Josh Kieffer of the University of Indianapolis in the 125lb championship match.

Junior Dominick Nania dropped his first match on Saturday before making an impressive run. He picked up a first round fall over a returning All-American, jumping WJU into sixth place. Nania recorded a second round 16-1 technical fall victory to advance to the consolation finals, where he would be wrestling for third place. The Greensburg, Pa. native recorded another fall, solidifying third place in the 149lb class. Nania earned the Midwest Classic Most Falls Award, as he finished with four falls and two technical falls on the weekend.

The Cardinals finished ahead of No. 8 ranked Findlay Univeristy, No. 9 Newberry College, and No. 13 Tiffin University.

WJU returns to action on January 8-9 at the National Duals in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
