Notes from Coach Doyle
Sean Doyle, Head Coach, Wheeling Jesuit University
February 9, 2016

We're just 17 days from the Super Region NCAA Qualifier and the team is extremely motivated to finish off what has been a fantastic 3rd year for the program. We will have a few more opportunities to compete in dual action (Millersville, Seton Hill and Gannon) as final competitive preparations for the post season. Please check out our Coaches Corner for a summary on the past few weeks and the stretch run.

As mentioned in Friday's email, the team wrestled #1 Notre Dame on Friday night. It may have been the team's best performance to date, winning 4 of the 10 contested bouts and losing two by just a point. We were defeated 24-15 and the focus, tenacity and toughness that our guys displayed was apparent to those in attendance. Each win and loss by the Cardinal wrestlers was done with class. In the face of some hostility and adversity, I was proud of our guys representation of Wheeling Jesuit. In front of a packed house at the McDonough Center, the team put on a great performance and nearly knocked off the #1 team in the country. For full story and match results, FOLLOW THIS LINK.

Individual updates

125
Dustin Warner (20-4, 8 falls, W&J Champion, Findlay Open Champion, 2nd Midwest Classic)
Dustin wrestled a game opponent and #8 ranked wrestler in the country Friday night. He won a hard fought decision 4-2 to bring the crowd to their feet. Like last year, we'll expect Dustin to continue to pick up momentum at this point of the year.

Josh Henderson (5-4, 1 fall, 6th place W&J)

133
Nolan Whitely (22-5, 6 fall, W&J Champion, 5th Findlay Open, 2nd Midwest Classic)
Nolan wrestled the #6 ranked wrestler in the country and wrestled about 6 minutes of the match at a level that will get him on the podium in March. Unfortunately a college wrestling match is 7 minutes. Nolan lost focus in a critical position late in the match and it cost him a quality win. Like Dustin, Nolan is a gamer and will thrive on post season matches.

Scott Lopez (16-9, Runner-up Findlay Open, Runner-up NUWAY College Open)

Nat Brown (5-5)

Jaylen Hill (2-4)

141
Damon Outward (13-12, 5 pins)
We can always count on Damon to come out with full effort. He is dangerous and can score on anyone in the country. Damon just needs to manage the match a little better and not put himself in compromising positions. I'm sure that most opponents will not want to see Damon as an early round opponent at the regional tournament.

Preston Bowshier (13-4, W&J Champion, 6th Findlay Open)

Tyler Hogue (5-4, 1 fall)

Trey Woodley (0-2)

149 Dominick Nania (22-4, 11 falls, 4th Findlay Open, 3rd Midwest Classic)
Dom continues to knock off quality opponents and is a tough match up for any opponent in the country. His current losses are to a redshirt and the #1, #3 and #8 wrestlers in the country. He'll have an opportunity at another top 8 opponent this weekend!

Kollin Clark (3-5)

Skyler Terrell (2-0)

Jonathan Barrett (1-2)

157
Reyse Wallbrown (13-12, 4 fall, W&J Champion)
Reyse lost to a one of Notre Dame's three national champions in the lineup and lost by an 8-4 decision. He looked better defensively and is working hard to score offensive points in the room. This will translate to more points in competition and a successful post season.

165
Keegan Driscoll (13-9, 1 fall, 5th place W&J, 6th place Findlay Open)
Keegan's match was one that really set the tone for the second half of the meet where our guys wrestled very hard against top notch opponents. Keegan is one of the most hard nosed and toughest wrestlers in our room and it showed Friday night against the #5 wrestler in the country. Keegan trailed 12-2 and was getting beat up pretty good before storming back to lose 13-12. It was a credit to his relentlessness and unwillingness to give in.

Peyton Geary (12-8, 1 fall, W&J Champion)

Cody Eggers (0-4)

174
Dean Meyer (2-1)
Dean picked up a huge victory over the #2 wrestler in the region and did it in dominating fashion. Dean is strong, stays in position and has great explosiveness. If he can continue to work himself into the condition necessary to wrestle at the national tournament, watch out.

Clayton Ray (8-5, 3 falls, 6th W&J)

John Lessner (1-4)

184 Sawyer Leppla (3-6, 4th Findlay Open) Sawyer is back in the line-up and done a very good job at doing the necessary things to put himself in a good position this month. He's wrestled the #1, #2 and a national qualifier in his last three matches and will definitely be prepared for the regional. We're excited about his opportunity to be Sioux Falls in March.

Garrett Reinwald (6-7)

Nate Starkey (2-5, 1 fall)

197
Terrance Fanning (17-5, W&J Champion)
Terrance wrestled another one of ND's national champions and this was exactly what Terrance needed after having not lost since mid December. We expect Terrance to be on the podium as an All-American and cleaning up any areas of improvement are needed. It's important that we find that out now in early February rather than in March when it costs us the most.

Jake Haynes (0-4)

285
Logan Bowman (8-10, 1 fall)
Logan picked up a big win over the #5 ranked wrestler in the region and capped of the evening with a hard fought win, that embodied the entire evening. Logan wrestled with a purpose the entire match and looked to score for 7 straight minutes. He needs to use this as a springboard for the last few weeks heading into regionals.

Corey Siegfried (8-7, W&J Champion)

Nathan Temple (6-2, 6th place Findlay Open)

Evan Roberts (1-6)

Miguel Staples (0-6)

REDSHIRTS (unattached wrestlers)

Ryan Winslow 10-5 (2nd place Findlay Open)
TJ Smith 3-6
Maxwell Lacey 4-2 (8th CSU Open)
Ki Ryder 2-0
Chase Logan 3-4
Tyler Jenkins 0-2
Brad Kakos 0-2
Tyler Knul 1-2
