Tech Starts The Season With A Shutout

11/8/2013
WESTMINSTER, Md. - WVU Tech's Golden Bears opened the season with a shutout victory over Thaddeus Stevens College (Pa.) Thursday evening at Winter's Mill High School. The first leg of a 1000 mile round trip road jaunt brought the team to Carroll County, Maryland, an area of the state where wrestling is important.

Against Stevens, freshman Devon Steele opened his college career with a hard fought decision victory, fighting off of his back at one point to avoid the pin in the second period. Devon used several takedowns and a tough ride to come out on top 8-6.

At 149 lbs. freshman Tyler Sierra opened up a tight match with a lateral drop and cruised to a major decision victory.

Senior Captain and two-time Academic All-American John Walters moved up to 157 for the competition and used an outside carry to put his opponent on their back which lead to a rare 1st period fall for the Delaware native.

At 197 lbs. freshman Peter Burbank endured a tough ride by his opponent in the second period and used three takedowns to seal his first collegiate win. The match concluded at 285 lbs where, normally a 197 lb,. Alex Lecroy bumped up a weight class and fought hard to preserve the shutout. He won 3-0 with an escape and a late takedown to earn his very first collegiate win.

The final team score was 49-0 in favor of the Golden Bears.

The Golden Bears' next match is Saturday afternoon at the College of Mt. St. Vincent in New York, where they will take on the host institution, Muhlenberg College, and Southern Maine University.
