comments: I am tired of reading this thing about East and West combination. I got your points about it. some people don't want it or other people want it. I don't care what is your idea? I know everything is going on in two ways. One way, East and West combinated. There will be 14 varisty wrestlers. I am telling truth.Who will be a coach for the team? I don't know but I bet a head coach from each high school will be coach for the team. It could be Mark Delliagtti and John Geary or Donald Courtney and Brad P. or John Geary and Donald Courtney or Mark Delligatti and Brad P. There are too many choices. My cousins are working hard right now. they are lifting weights and working on wrestling moves. I am postive that they will earn a spot on the Varisty team. Blane will get on Varisty cause he is working hard right now. Blane, Brandon, Ben, and I are going on a trip together to Alabama. We will give our best shot to get to the top of 3 places. We plus Meatball (Matthew Delligatti) will going to Fargo, ND. . I am telling the truth. We are working hard cause i can see everything in Fairmont. I am tired of the people who are talking cheap on a person who is working hard. If East and West is not combined, everything will be going the same as last year but different person on varisty. Matt MIller, Jeff N., Matt S., John Holt, Curtis Barber, Brad M., Johnath D., and Sammy Bonasso won't be here next year. Matt Miller and Jeff N. did a great job this year cause they work so hard for their goals. Good job dudes. If u guys have a question just e mail me thanks for reading this info.

THE PICTURE PEOPLE TOLD US WE WOULD RECEIVE THEM IN A MONTH AT THE LONGEST. NEEDLESS TO SAY IT HAS BEEN 2 MONTHS AND NO PICTURES AND OF COURSE NO NAME ON RECEIPT, SO I WOULD LIKE TO GET IN TOUCH WITH SAM BALDWIN TO SEE IF HE KNOWS HOW TO CONTACT THEM. THANKS.

I saw his name on here and was wondering about some of the top wrestlers in this weight.I had a lot of fun watchin this weight this year and I'm eager to see what these wrestlers will do in high school.I would love to see some more info on some of the top wrestlers in this weight.

comments: It would be very awesome to see Fairmont Seniors returning varsity be joined by blane mayle and maybe one or two East Side wreslters to make up the "Fairmont" team if they consolidated. But if they would consolidate it would take a serious toll on the East Side wrestling team. But in other sports the teams would be unstoppable.

He gave up on himself by not continuing his wrestle career in college. There will always be alot of great high school wrestlers come from west virginia but how many make it to the next level. And i am talking about DI wrestling.

comments: To Dave: Don't know who Patrick O'Malley of Braxton County lost to at WSAZ, but his only other two losses during the season were to Doug "Mr. Psycho" Sillex of Harpers Ferry. O'Malley was the only wrestler that "Mr. Psycho (25-0) had trouble with and, in this observer's opinion, they were the two best wrestlers in the state at their weight classes (165). Patrick kicked butt at the recent Ohio wrestling championships and "Mr. Psycho" will be the 4th Harpers Ferry wrestler to earn All-American status in three years when he takes apart the competition on Sat. April 28 at University High and then goes on to Alabama for nationals. Good luck to both wrestlers in their continuing seasons!!!

comments: Quit talking about all these match-ups and make them happen... I am sure either wrestler wouldn't mind a little off-season wrestling. I mean, what do they have to lose??? A little pride? Never try, never know... The only real way to settle these matches is to have A-AA champion against AAA champion. That way everyone would stop crying over who the better wrestler is! I guess if you all didn't bring these thoughts of who would beat who, none of us would have anything to talk about. Just shut up and wrestle!

comments: For three years in high school I wrestled with the best high school wrestler I've ever seen, and i've seen alot of them all around the country. He was a state champion his sophomore and junior year. His senior year he was hurt the whole season, I remember seeing him spew up blood for as long as 30 minutes sometimes his elbow was messed up so bad he couldn't even move it, he wrestled with a pulled groin the whole season, he lost to some outstanding wrestlers who had no chance of beating him when he was healthy. everybody gave up on him and treated him like crap, except for me and his grandmother, he wrestled in the state tournament in more pain than I've ever seen anyone in and he took 5th,I just wanted to give credit where credit is due, he's not just a great wrestler he's agreat person, he wrestled for PHS and his name is Matt George.

comments: I think that Chriss Satterfield is a very good wrestler, but not as good as everyone says he is i wrestled him my senior year and lost 3-0, i gave up 2 penalty points and an escape with 2 seconds left and i was wrestling with a torn shoulder. though i think he will place in the top 2 again in 2002. I'm going to make my sleeper pick for the 275 state champion, paul johnson from phs he had a very impressive season last year and will surprise everyone this year.

comments: Now wait a minute, I don't know who these mat-maids are but they have some nerve stating that they "know" O'Neil couldn't beat Noechel. There wasn't a better technical 215 in the state than O'Neil HANDS DOWN! And although O'Neil was a small 189 most of the year, he was not all that weak at 215. O'Neil can, and in my opinion would beat Noechel if they wrestled. I think some certain mat maids haven't been doing their homework...

comments: The real reason why East Fairmont doesnt want East and West to combine is because West would have many more varstiy guys than East. In football it would just be West's players with the East coach. East does have some good athletes but not nearly the talent of West. Their wouldnt be any problem if the EASTSIDERS would have voted for the school bond. Thank you

Mason Bailey (1999 & 2001) joined Eric Morris (1998 & 1999) as the 2nd EFJWC Grappler to become a 2-Time Tournament of Champion Champ. Steven Robe, Layne Michael and Tyler Hartzell all placed 5th. Special congrats to Blane Mayle the newest member of the High School team for a very impressive performance. In a 39 man bracket with at least 6 state champions from Pa, Ohio, NY, WV (Robbbie Ripley), NC, and state placewinners from Michigan, Texas, PA, Ohio, Va, Blane finished 5th, beating Ohio state champion Brent Smilek, Ohio div 2 third place finisher Kalen Knull, and most impressive was his 8-2 win over Thad Benton of Claysburg PA who finished 3rd in PA AAA and 8th at the senior nationals. Mayle was the only underclassman and WV wresler to place in the weight class. It was great watching you wrestle Blane and look forward to seeing you at EF matches next winter. Keep up the good work.

comments: yes caughy pinned morrison but in his defense , he has not wrestled in 5 years , also the aaa heaveyweight championship match was the semi between morrison and satterfield . if you would look back to when morrison was wrestling every year you will see that he beat both of them on a regularly . i doubt that either one of these young men took such a long break from the sport. this is not to take anything away from these fine young men but lets be realistic about it. anyone who knows anything about wrestling will tell you that such a long break will hurt you now a days because it is so competive . a fine job to all three of these young men .

comments: why is everyone saying that this person is better than this one i dont understand, i mean the heavyweight weight class is very underestimated, caughey might be the best heavyweight but look at guys like the satterfield boy from east he weighed 210 all season and wrestled well in my opinion wellman caughey and naylor were all a good 273, and he beat all caughey and wellman, and he was tied with naylor until he got hurt in the match,u give that boy 30 more pounds than you would see, or how about jeff noechel he weighed 190 all season and ran through eveyone u give those boys more weight and u wouldnt touch them.

comments: We know that O'Neil would have no chance against Noechel. Noechel went his senior year with 90 take-downs and a record of 44-1. Noechel was a beast this year ..the only kid who beat him was from North Carolina and he was even more beastly than Noechel (if u can believe that!?!).

We don't like the idea of the consolidation of East & West schools. We think if they become one school, the only thing that would benefit is the football team...the wrestling program would be severly hurt. Since East & West are separate schools right now, this enables 28 wrestlers to have the opportunity to become states qualifiers & become state champs. If there was a consolidation, only 14 wrestlers would have the chance to be on varsity & go on to wrestle at states. East and West both have extraordinary coaches that have the chance to work with these talented boys. If they consolidate, only two coaches would get to coach the boys on the wrestling mats. We understand that we would dominate as a consolidated school but not as many indivdual boys would have the chance to compete. We also believe that the Geary twins and Blane Mayle would have a starting position even if the consolidation does happen, along with many other incredible boys. We would like to wish all the East Fairmont peewee's and high school wrestlers, that are participating in the Ohio Tournament of Champions this weekend (April 21), the best of luck!

comments: We can agree to disagree on this whole Johnson, Hughes thing. I have wrestled Johnson before but never Hughes, so I guess I can't say for certain, but Hughes seems to be more of a power wrestler and I've seen Johnson beat very good power wrestlers before, example Bosley. Hughes matches up better against power wrestlers like Bosley because he is stronger than them, but Johnson doesn't get in there and bruise. However I got to stick to my guns on this whole Caughey thing. It's true double A doesn't have much depth, well at any weight, but that doesn't mean their top levels wrestlers aren't very good. Lets remember that Caughey wrestles for Oak Glen, and Oak Glen doesn't just wrestle double AA schools like some teams do. Oak Glen gets out there and wrestles tough teams, including good triple A schools, including PARKERSBURG SOUTH...when Caughey pinned Morrison , triple AAA placer.

If you haven't already registered please see the entry form on this web site. Registration and weigh-in is Friday, April 27th from 5-7 PM. You may weigh in on Saturday between 8-9 AM ONLY IF you are pre-registered and you MUST weigh in at the weight that you have pre-registered for. Wrestling starts on Saturday, April 28th at 10:00 AM. The top 4 finishers in each weight class qualify for the NHSCA National Open in Birmingham, Alabama on July 1-3. comments: AA heavyweight was harder than AAA!! Morrison got third and Caughy pinned him in 44 seconds. The best AAA heavyweight was Matt Clay and he was only a 2nd year wrestler! Bottom line Caughy and Naylor were the best 2 in the state. If either of them had been in AAA they would have pinned their way through the tournament. This is my final comment on the issue.

comments: I would like to congratulate Patrick O'Malley in finishing first in the Ohio State Championships on Apr. 8. Patrick ran in an 18 team track meet on Apr. 6 finishing 1st in the 100 and 200 and also anchored the winning 4x100 relay. He wrestled on Sunday, April 8 and ran in another track meet on April 9, finishing 2nd in the 100, 1st in the 200, anchoring the winning 4x100 relay team, and placing 2nd in the shot with a throw of 39 ft. He was competing in the shot after only two days of throwing it in practice because he wanted to help score "team points." Coach Bryan and I are in the middle of track season and all of these guys are also on the BCMS Track Team which is currently undefeated. I can't say enough about these student-athletes. They have excellent grades, great sportsmanship and the work ethic to continue as fine athletes. Special thanks, also, to all of those people in Braxton County who made this trip possible.

comments: Superman, I live in region 1, I think I would know what I am talking about and being a former wrestler myself who has wrestled both Johnson and Hughes. Johnson could not beat Tyler Hughes on his feet. and when they both escape, the final score will be 5-1 Hughes b/c Hughes will score a takedown during the 2nd or 3rd period. and Caughey? how many good 275 lbs are in AA? maybe 2.

comments: I have seen Hughes wrestle, and I have seen Johnson wrestle, I think you are a little off on what you said. I don't know who is the better wrestler, but what I do it would be a tremendous match that could go either way. Both wrestlers are tremendous on their feet and very good on bottom. Hughes also excels from top, unfortunately I have not had the privilage of watching Johnson on top. I think the point I am aiming for would be that the only way to decide who is better is to watch these two wrestle. Adios, Jim R.

comments: Thank you, "Youth Fan" for your support. Youth Fan is right. PA is one of the best, or the best, wrestling State in the country, (from youth to college). PA contributed roughly 30% of the college recruits in 2000; therefore, they must be doing something right. Wouldn’t you agree? I think we need to learn from others. “Change” is hard to except and to do sometimes, but for WV wrestling to develop to the next level it must start from the “Proud Parents” in the youth program! Editor's note:
There has been some weirdness with my email in the past week. Here are some posts which arrived in an unusual fashion. Sorry for the delay.

On another note, our ISP was attacked by the Lion Worm (1i0n) worm last week. Pinnacle Mall runs a Linux system, and the Lion worm is out on the net attacking Linux systems with a particular vulnerability. The patch is being applied. This is no joke. I used to think that worms and viruses were a myth, but this is a real serious problem. Let me know if you notice weird things happening with this website (other than the usual weirdness). The lion worm attacked most of the websites hosted by Pinnacle Mall, replacing the page index.html with one of its own, and doing other dastardly damage.

Did anyone catch the front page of this website for the brief period of time that the page was replaced by the one related to the Lion Worm????

How could you say that the Geary's and Blane Mayle won't have a starting spot if they consolidate Marion county. I dont see anyone in Marion county that will kepp them from getting a starting spot in the line-up. I dont even see them consolidating the schools while they are still in HS, but if they did I still DO NOT see them being JV wrestlers. comments: Congradulations to Robbie Ripley for a great job at AAU World Nationals this past weekend. Robbie finished second in the 145 lb. class, loosing in overtime to the 140lb. Mich. St. Champ this year. On his way to the final Ripley defeated PA.'s 3rd place state finisher this year, and Wisconsin's 3rd place state finisher. The PA wrestler had finished 4th at the High School Senior Nationals at 140lb. the weekend before. Robbie went 5-1 for the tournament and did a fine job representing our state not only with his wrestling but his sportmanship too.

It shouldn't be the day of the tournament for a major event. Plain and simple. Does West Virginia know more than everybody else? PA States- Age as of Jan. 1. MD States-Age as of Jan. 1. OH States-Age as of Jan. 1. Tournament of Champions-Age as of Jan. 1. Tulsa Nationals-September 1. Reno Nationals-September 1. AAU Nationals-Grade in school with a max age. And on and on. None are the age as of the day of the tournament. If I was a betting man Coach, I would say you have some boys who have birthdays in March, after the tournament. It also might look like I have some boys who have age changes after the first of the year. So let's make it September 1. Whatever, let's set a date and stick to it like Mr. Moore suggests.

Todd, thanks for the responce. We just need some people to get together to make ONE state tournament a reality. And no, Coach for fair play, winning Pburg does not make you a state champ any more than winning in Clarksburg does.

comments: Parkersburg has the majority of the better wrestlers for a reason - we are dedicated. We get up at 3:00 in the morning to travel - to find our kids the best matches. The Patriots and the Cougars do not participate in rec. programs - they are serious wrestling clubs. To say that we should qualify to participate in the State Tournament by regions is ridiculous. Are you trying to get your child a trophy without putting out the work for it by elimination some of the Parkersburg wrestlers? Besides, not all Parkersburg wrestlers are from Parkersburg. You might be surprised at just how far some of the Parkersburg wrestlers drive every day to practice. Do you realize that there is a 64 man bracket? I believe that it should be left as is. Any resident of WV that has the desire to participate in the State Tournament has the opportunity to do so. Any parent that feels that their child is not good enough can stay home.

As for the age cut-off, I believe that the people complaining have what is commonly know as a "bad birthday" - which is merely an excuse. A lot of kids will compete in the upper age group all year long - because they want to become better by wrestling tougher opponants and that makes them better. To want to change the cut-off date is just another way of eliminating the opponants instead of facing them. One quick note for those of you that think the West Virginia State Wrestling Tournament age as of date of tournament should be changed - Next time you see Sam Baldwin - ask him what his son's date of birth is. I'm sure that it is a majority ruling that the cut-off date remaines the way it is. Also, my child has never won the Parkersburg tournament but he did win the Clarksburg tournament. Do I call him a state champion? No, because in my heart, I know that he did not pull it off on the day that it counted, even though the placewinners were the same kids at both. Do I call him a champion - YES, and there will be a day for him, but it is not going to come by changing this or changing that to eliminate someone, it is going to come when he wants bad enough.

Good to hear your area takes pride in it's wrestling. As for the state tournament, I agree it should move from time to time. Give every community the opportunity to enjoy the show, and the influx of funds to area businesses never hurts. As for the age cut off date, let's be uniform with every other state around us to maintain uniformity. Jan 1st is just as good as the date of the event, we all just need to follow one or the other. Keep building the program, especially from the ground up. The first few years are critical to a wrestlers attitude later on. I would encourage more of the community to get involved with their teams. Would you get a math teacher to teach french? Wrestlers teach wrestlers. A large degree of Parkersburgs success comes from the high community support. Almost every teams coaching staff is loaded with volunteers. Some of the most success programs are are coached entirely by volunteers.

comments: The sports you cite are team sports regarding age cutoff dates and are poor reasons to change the "date as of the age of tournament" rule. Little League's cutoff is August 1--a full month AFTER the regular season ends--not DURING the season as you suggested with a January cutoff for youth wrestling. A better comparison may be made with "individual" youth sports like golf and tennis. Nearly all have an age cutoff as of the date of the competition. The example of the 12 yr. old wrestling a 16 yr. old is exactly the type of misleading "well chosen example" that statisticians warn about. The problem there is the fact that the low number of kids at 13-15 make this larger age gap necessary. The kids who won at Parkersburg are the true youth state champs as Stat Man pointed out in some earlier posts, unless you can refute his logic and numbers.

Parkersburg has an excellent wrestling program, top to bottom. No argument here. And I don't have a problem with having the states in Pburg every year, it seems to be a tradition. But let's do it right. If it is truly a STATE tournament, you should have a board with a representative from each region or section of the state. This board should then form the "rules" of the tournament. Otherwise this is just another open tournament held by one county, and benefitting one county, and is not a true state tournmaent.

By the way, we think there is a little wrestling being done here in Northcentral WV also. Marion County had 25% of the finalists in AAA, with 6 coming from the two Fairmont schools, who will probably be one team in the next couple of years. I believe Wood County had 3 this year, so I think the programs are comparable.

As for the best Junior wrestling in the state, we feel we have a pretty good program here in Fairmont. We might not have the quantity of wrestlers that Pburg has, but the quality is every bit as good. But lets have a REAL state tournament and find out.

comments: To wrestling fan: While I do not know what the controversy is in your locality, you also have to take into consideration the rest of the state. While your idea of eliminating 9th grade wrestling at the AAA level may be noble, its just not practical for other parts of the state. Many of the counties are not on the junior high system and have 6th through 8th grade middle schools instead. Of these middle schools some do not offer school-spnsored wrestling. For example, Berkeley County with three AAA schools does not sponsor any school sports at the middle school level (unless that policy has changed in the past couple of years). What then are the 9th graders to do? Many schools struggle to fill out their weight brackets as it is much less trying to field a separate "9th grade team." 9th graders often fill in the holes or wrestle in the lower wieghts anyway. Eliminating 9th graders will increase the number of forfeits on the varsity level. Also, there is a limited number of dollars for wrestling in most athletic budgets. Having a 9th grade team increases the money spent on wrestling since they would have to attend separate tournaments. If a kid is good enough to wrestle varsity, let him do it, otherwise, let the coach get him a couple of junior varsity matches when available. If the high school has 9th graders, then let them wrestle, if they don't then the kid will have to wait until 10th grade. Finally, boys and girls develop at differents ages. What is the difference between a physically mature 9th grader beating a prepubuscent 7th grader and senior beating a prepubuscent 9th grader? They are both at a disadvantage. Wrestling fan, while I think new ideas are great and are what this forum is all about, I thought I'd offer my opinion on why I don't agree with your ideas.

Even with 4 grades in each school they still have only about 900 students in each.(North Marion has just over 1000)So to make this consolidation work they will have to Make the school 10th,11th, and 12th.

comments: Reply to Youth Coach for fair play:
Why do you feel that the cut-off date for the tournament should be the age of that tournament? No other sport does it that way, and no other STATE does it that way, at least the ones that I am directly familiar with. We are going to the Ohio States on Sunday, and their cutoof date is Jan. 1. Pennsylvania, who may be the best state in the nation for wrestling, has a Jan. 1 date. The nationals in Tulsa and Reno are September 1, as are many others. Why should West Virginia be any different?

When you sign your boy up for baseball, don't they ask for birthdate as of August 1. Football September 1. Soccer August 1. Basketball October 1. Why should wrestling, more to the point West Virginia wrestling, be any different?

We had a boy who was 12 the week before your tournament, while a boy could have turned 16 the week after your tournament. Both would have wrestled 13-15.

What I wrote earlier in regard to using grades was just an example of what we might be able to do and what AAU wrestling does. Your boy would wrestle 4th and 5th with a max age of 11. If the boy is twelve he has to wrestle up, plain and simple. But that was only one example. There are other ways to do it, it just needs to be done.

My point with all of this is that we need to have ONE state tournament. We need to get people from all areas of the state involved in this. Whoever won the Parkersburg tournament is not the state champ because he didn't wrestle the kids from Oak Glen or Fairmont or Jefferson. By the same token, the boys who won in Clarksburg are not state champs because they didn't wrestle kids from Parkersburg, Wheeling or Charleston.

We have the ability to have a great state championship tournament. We just need to do it.

I'm sure there are some 9th graders out there that could wrestle at the high school level but the rules are set for AAA schools. Why must some (parents, I'm sure) believe they are above everyone else and think they can ignore the rules just to satisfy their wrestling dreams not the young men who are out on the mat. Give the young men a change to develop before you throw them to the mats with much older, experienced wrestlers. Lets let them enjoy the sport at the Jr High Level and build from there. I see too many parents trying to push their boys/girls too much and too far at a young age. Then by the time it really counts they are not ready mentally. Lets not push this issue too far for the boys sake. They are only young once and they need that part of their lifes to develop into fine men who must know winning isn't everything. Thank you and God Speed.

comments: I would like to express some opinions on AA vs AAA. I agree with most of the comments made. However
119: Morris was 40-1 this year, Stevens was 37-4. I think Morris would beat him. The fact that he lost 4 matches shows he is beatable. It's the same way with Auvil and Metz.
135: I think Smith could indeed beat Muldrew especially if he wrestled as well as he did at states. He has a great career ahead of him.
189: Delebrou would probably beat Mill April 30, 2001
From: JC
email: 215: I don't think O'Neil would beat Noechel, Noechel is a tough wrestler. I think Stover could beat Wells because of his strength, in fact I think that Hovermale could probably beat Deligatti.
In closing I feel alot of AA wrestlers get short-changed, on publicity. If there is a comment on here that doesn't glorify certain wrestlers, people from big schools will fly mad. There alot of good wrestlers (AA and AAA) who are not recognized on here, for fear of stepping on someone's toes.

I love your picks however i do not think hughes could wrestle with johnson, johnson is far too talented on his feet for hughes in my opinion.

comments: Who is Justin Wyer? Checking the wrestlingreport.com list of college recruits and he is listed as signing with Lehigh from Fairmont, WV. Does he wrestle at prep school? Lehigh is a serious Division I school when it comes to wrestling. Thought I would have heard of anyone with ability to move to next level.

comments: I personally think Pirate_Mann was rather fair in his picks and he gave most of them to the AAA wrestlers, to make an assumption like that is not fair to him. Sure it may seem a little odd or unfair to think that a junior from a small town school like Chris Morris or Corey Auvil would beat the Dutton Award winner Stevens or his worthy opponent, the only person in state to defeat him in 3 years Ryan Metz, but you must give credit to these fine athletes in the AA-A division. They won state a state title and a runner-up award too, and fought through some fine competition to get there. So lets not be too quick to judge someone on here. Congratulations to all four wrestlers though on your wonderful acheivements, and I can't wait to watch Chris and Ryan wrestle again next year!

comments: There was one other major difference between the Parkersburg and Clarksburg factions--date of cutoff on ages. EVERY tournament should have the date of the cutoff as of the date one wrestles. Clarksburg must have alot of kids with January and February birthdates because this is a BIG item with them and they allow actual nine (9) year olds to wrestle in 8 and under. With regard to the father who suggested that grade in school be used--this method rewards kids that have been held back a year in school or whose parents started them late in school to obtain an advantage. This type of "academic redshirt" is VERY prevalent. My son is the ONLY 10 year old in his 5th grade class--the rest are 11 and 12. Should he be penalized for starting first grade at age 6 instead of 7 like alot of kids? He will be penalized enough later wrestling 18 year old seniors in high school.

First at 119 Stevens losing to Morris is a total joke, also how can you say Hayes would lose to bosley at 135, for godness sake hayes lost a match to smith of williamstown this year in double ot on a locked hands call, and i watched hayes tech fall bosley a few years back

comments: Just for the record I made a valid attempt to mediate between the two parties in an effort to have one state youth championship. The Parkersburg group made every effort possible to accomodate the Clarksburg group ie seeding, officals etc.I am willing to make another effort if the Cburg group will mediate with real intentions.I feel that the meet in Pburg was much improved over past meets and Sam Baldwin assures everyone it will continue to improve.

He ended his traveling season with a 47-2 record. Steven also wrestled here at home for The Point Knights, he ended the season today with a 1st place win, and a 12-0 record.
