comments: I'd be willing to bet their will be an Oak Glen wrestler or two or three on the top of the podium the first Saturday night in March. Also, don't conceed 215 to Hashman just yet. I will agree with you he is a very good wrestler and a lot of fun to watch. But Bill Whitehill from Oak Glen is no slouch. Even though they are in the same region, I don't believe they wrestled last year. But Whitehill finished 5th at States and is tremendously better this year from an offensive standpoint.

comments: To JORDAN: Why are you putting Dye of Wirt ahead of Duncan when Duncan beat him last year, and Biddle ahead of Ashley, and Efaw ahead of Clark, and Metz ahead of Flowers???? I think you need to put some more research into your picks.

comments: Middle School Front Runners

After a few weeks of the season here are some Middle School kids who have impressed me. Of course, we have not wrestled everyone yet! I am sure there are a bunch from Edison, Blenerhassett, Indy, (Jr. Highs) etc. that should go in here. Please add anyone I overlooked. These are NOT RANKED IN ANY ORDER! Just kids that are looking good.

comments: Oak Glen vs. South prediction: I think Oak Glen will win 8 matches and South will win 6. I think the key matches that can go either way and will determine the outcome are 103, 112, 152 and 275. I believe they will split these four weights and the Bears win 35-28...

Bush's new economic director). As for Anthony Valles, he was under the weather for a few weeks but am told by persons close to Madonna's program that he should be back at 112 this week.

comments: Any predictions on the OG/Parkersburg South match this Saturday? Even though the visitor has won both previous matches, I believe Oak Glen will break that trend. They are solid as is evident by their runaway win at the Knights Inn Invitational in St. Clairsville, OH last weekend. All 14 OG wrestlers placed in the top 5, but none were champions and they won the tournament by 100+ points!!! GO BEARS!!!

But hey ! I think it's interesting to look at and besides isn't this site here for us to have some fun as well as exchange serious information ? P.S. where did the mysterious boxing match take place ? Is it really such a big secret ?

comments: I heard that Matt Deligatti from Fairmont Senior dislocated his shoulder during a match at the Wheeling Park Duals and continued wrestling. That takes alot of heart, to get injured and still compete. I guess he really wants to be in the mix come late Feb. Look for him and crosstown foe Brandon Geary go at it very soon at the Winners Choice. I want to also wish my team good luck in the dual against Bridgeport, I look for this to become a big rivalry in the area.

I think Charlie Thomas from Hoover, and also Clendenin, which did not even have a team was an example of a dedicated wrestler. He traveled where-ever he could could get a match and also traveld as far as Sissonville to get to practice as a middle school student.

From: to fan commenting on poor sportsmanship
comments: For one, I think I was at the same place. I was watching that match closely, and the reason for that wrestler being that way was because the fans of the opposing team was mouthing him on the mat. Number two, at least put where you are from. Because if I am at the same place you are, the team that was such poor sportsman, dominated the tourny. So, it sounds like a sore loser to those who are on the outside looking in, instead of a concerned spectator.
Editor's note: Well, the fan did put what event was in question, but I edited all that out. I guess it will be forever a mystery....

comments: I would like to send a congrats to the Point Pleasant team for their win over Roane, Calhoun, and Grafton at the Roane Quad this past weekend! From what I hear, Point lost a starter due to injury late in the day, and another due to weight problems for all day. I know that the heavy weights were right there to give the team some well-needed points in the match against Calhoun.

comments: Noticed the post on Duncan from Point Pleasant. I agree he should be ranked 1st or 2nd at 140 AA. He was beating Ray from Huntington High at Red Dragon Duals 4-0 late in the 3rd period when he slipped and got caught in a cradle and was pinned. He also decisioned Wilson from Woodrow 2-1. He is a tough competitor and will definately be in the mix to win it all.

comments: I went to a wrestling match and I have never seen such bad sportsmanship from one team in all the years that I have been attending wrestling. They threw punches and they mouthed and even one kid left the mat and wouldnt even let the ref hold his hand up until his coach made him go over there, and let the ref raise his hand. I didnt notice all of it because I was watching my sons team wrestle but I knew there were going to be some good match ups. It was bad to see kids act like that and it probably embarassed their coach.

comments: I think that there is someone being overlooked in the 125 weight class who happens to be from the school I go to in Tyler County. His name is Alex Northcraft. He is one of our best wrestlers, yet doesn't get any respect. He has only been beaten by two people: Bartrug from St. Mary's and a kid from Calhoun. He placed first in his weight class at our home tournament and is continuing to do great for his senior year. I bet he will even end up at states.

comments: No offense to any of the other 140's out there in the state, but I do not understand how you can possibly put Duncan of Point Pleasant four. If you were at the Point Pleasant tournament this past weekend, you would have seen a great match between Mitch Smith and Duncan. 7-3. It was 5-3 with about 10 seconds left. It was a great match where both wrestlers gave it everything they possibly could. That right there makes him better than four. Smith pinned everyone but Duncan, and Duncan pinned everyone but Smith. I would put Duncan at 1 or 2

To the editor: I am glad you have reinstituted the AAA & AA/A Wresting Poll this year. I missed it greatly last year. Also, is there any way you could post the state's high profile wrestlers' records as the regional and state tournaments come closer. The bad thing about living so far away, is it is hard to find out who the best wrestlers are in each weight class other than by reading the forum reader's predictions. Thanks.

comments: Congrats to both of our Parkersburg teams on representing the state well... Hats off to these two programs, no wonder they are the best in the state... You have to wrestle the best to be the best... Good luck this weekend at the Powerade Tournament and at Brecksville...

To Reddog... If the scores were correct, it was the same Justus from Grundy that defeated Nathan Pickens last year. I believe that the score was 10-9. Blane Mayle of East Fairmont did in fact beat Justus this weekend 16-6 at the WRAL in N.C.

The Wheeling Park Duals this weekend will showcase a few of AAA's top teams: #3 Brooke, #4 East Fairmont, #6 Hedgesville, #10 North Marion. There will be a few interesting matches if these teams were to meet head to head:
112-Greynolds(EF)vs Greiner(Brk)vs Shumate(NM)...
145-Hays(NM)vs Barnes(EF)vs Davis(Brk)...
152-Bliss(Brk)vs Lord(Hed)...
171-Ammons(Hed)vs Mayle(EF)...
215-Geary(EF)vs Starsick(NM)...
HWT-Jones(Hed)vs Valentine(EF)...

I think Swiger 189, lobis 135, wince 140, and boone 215 could a be a threat to people. Lobis and swiger are still undefeated, wince is not far behind. Boone should be back stronger than ever.

comments: to weight watcher: i wrestled 215 back in the 90's i dropped 20 lbs to get down there but i did wrestle one year as a heavyweight when i weighed 240 and a large portion of the wrestlers were fat. they are skilled but i find it more enjoyable to watch lighter guys because there is more action. i also played on a state champion football team and missed the first few weeks of wrestling and it never hurt me one bit. i'm just tired of people making excuses to why they aren't doing so well yet. thats why they need to deal with it suck it up and wrestle.

comments: You know i notice that the really good wrestlers in WV arent spoken of much on the Forum. They just wrestle and the people that know them have enough respect for them not to run there mouths on here. comments: I noticed the Wv-Mat poll question about the new weigh in procedures and the responses. It is interesting that some don't like the new weigh in procedure. Is it possible that the wrestlers who are in favor, are wrestling at a comfortable weight near their optimal body fat percentage of 7 to 9 % and the wrestlers who are opposed to the rule are going beyond what is comfortable and due to dehydration of 3 to 5 lbs. (or more) before weigh-in find it difficult to make weight the 2nd day of an event ? If this is the case, then the new rule is having the effect that it was instituted for. If a wrestler is miserable and cannot make weight the 2nd day of a tournament he needs to be at a higher weight class. While in the past a wrestler dehydrating may have gained an unfair advantage over an opponent who is wrestling at his optimal body weight. He did this by dehydrating and then putting it back on after weigh-in that day and during the subsequent day or days of a tournament, in this way he could gain a weight advantage of 3 to 10 lbs. Staying in a dehydrated state for a long period of time srews up electrolights, your immune system and due to the fact that muscle is composed of a large percentage of water, the wrestler trying to stay at a weight he shouldn't be at is now at the disadvantage.

It's funny that at tournaments some teams constantly have kids with virus or flu like symptoms. They also in most cases have the kids who have lost the most weight. Coincidence, probably not, when your body has nothing to draw on to defend itself you get sick. The rule is a good one and while some will still try to go to far, it will benefit the sport of wrestling and those who abide by it in the end.

The tournament results can be found there. FYI, Parkersburg High finished 16th out of 81 teams. Placers were 112-Shyver 6th, 119-Rader 5th, 135-Knapp 8th, and 215-Thomas 10th. Not bad considering 7 of the top 13 ranked high schools competed in this tournament, including #1, #2, and #3 ranked teams. At the begining of the match he took a shot, picked morris up and put him on his back, 5-0....then morris based up and got the escape, 5-1 ....end of period....then dave took bottom and got put on his back and pinned.....Morris won the match.....but i can promise you next time they wrestle he will be at 100% I will personnaly make sure of that!!! So how bout you all keep your little comments to yourself. Thank YOU! They finsihed 2nd in two tournaments behind St. Mary's in both of them, even though they gave up two and three weight classes which would of helped them win. Belpres freshman impressed me with Reyes not losing in any of the two tourneys and cole and joy putting out impressive efforts. Cole finished 2nd last week and Joy went 3-2 wrestling 8 pds up. But look for the seniors Gibson Randolph and Eaton to carry the Eagles to a TVC win and watch out for Reyes as well.

Jeff Courtney, Matt Miller, Chris Daggett, Lou Thomas....5 and 6 were also two excellent wrestlers,Ray Linger and Joey Joplin. Linger should place very high this year. Had Joplin not been a senior he would have placed high the next year, he was just in a tough weight his sr year. Anyways, looking at the caliber of all those wrestlers, that was indeed the toughest weight class

comments: It is difficult to answer your question without knowing the specific facts of the match, however, I witnessed an interesting match Saturday at South Parkersburg youth tournament. In a 13-15 consilation finals match, the wrestler who took bottom was repeatedly attempting to perform an excape from the stand-up position. He was getting little back pressure and each time was being driven out of bounds. The top man was doing the proper move, but the bottom man "thought" he was being done wrong. The ref made the proper call, however the bottom man was frustrated and ended up being pinned, then the ref took one team point away from the bottom mans team point standings for unsportmanlike conduct(also the proper call). In this case, the action went off the mat, but even though one wrestler thought it was illegal, it was not. The refs that I have witnessed over the years do an excellant job controlling matches like this and this was no different. Hope this example helps answer your question.

That same year, Shane Grogg was a ninth grader in the Wood County school system and unable to even compete in the high school state tournament. This match meant a lot to Grogg as he was able to show everyone that he, too, was one of the top wrestlers in West Virginia. comments: I would like to take time to thank all the good folks at Point Pleasant who put together the Pool Duals event this past weekend. This is a gargantuan effort and involves a lot of people working very hard. The wrestlers in our area owe a debt of thanks for allowing us to get ten matches in 2 days. As far as I can tell, we wrestled somewhere over 1250 matches in 2 evenings. Not only that but the high schools did the same. Although the event lasted a long time it was smoothly and efficiently run. Everything was top notch from the awards to the food! Let me say that this is one coach that is 100% in favor of bout numbers and a Medina board at more events. It was wonderful - I don't think a kid missed a match all weekend - and no announcer droning on and on. The mix of middle schools and Jr. High / Freshman teams provided us with some tough competition and helped us get ready for WSAZ later in the year. Perhaps one of the best parts was that we coaches were provided with a complete set of results to use for stats and future seeding. Milton was fortunate enough to win the event but I'm sure the last place teams coach would have the same comments. I heard nothing but praise from all I talked to, parents, wrestlers, coaches and fans. Also a word to the refs - you guys also did a great job especially near the end of the tournament when the feature matches of the tournament were on the line and you had to be in a near zombie state from exhaustion.

One last word to my team - thanks for the maximum effort, both at the event and in the practice room. "The sacrifices are great but so are the rewards." - B. Bryant

Remember those wrestling over Christmas break in your prayers to keep them safe from injury. Happy Holidays to all and to all a good night.

(exhibitions don't count)Seems like Bishop from Hoover is doing pretty well though; (4) My guess is Potts wasn't varsity last year at Oak Glenn because you had a two-time state champion (Hebrock) at 189 and, assuming Potts was lighter last year, you had a three-time state champion at 171 (Stickles). comments: congrats to Williamstown, winning all three matches at your super quad.Is anybody going to beat Casey Biddle, or Shane Smith this year in A-AA? Jesse your looking like you have stepped it up a notch. Chad your doing great job with the little amount of mat experience you had last year behind Tyler Westbrook. You will do real good the rest of the year and next if you keep working hard. If you guys gel as a team, you will be unstopable everyone looked great,Craig you WILL be a stater. Scott,Anthony,Ryan, Lee,Alan,J.D.,Dustin,Nathanial,Nathan, it takes every one of you guys to make a run for the state. Keep your heads up. I will be watching all your matches. LATER

comments: I agree with Coach Moore and Coach LeMasters that it is very difficult to cut kids in middle school wrestling and I hate that in some instances it has to happen. Braxton County Middle School has 800+ students with 50-60 going out for wrestling. With only x amount of mat space available for kids to wrestle and x amount of cafeteria space to put down the mats (while the "other winter sport" occupies the gym) it is virtually impossible to safely insure practice time with 60 kids. As a teacher/coach who does not believe in cutting any student/athlete from any sport, I have found that sometimes we have no choice. With the addition of 6th graders, which I applaud, our numbers have increased each year. I also coach track and I'm happy to say that we make no cuts. We may have 75-90 student/athletes in our track program but we can safely and effectively cover the numbers. On another note, I applaud Braxton County Middle for requiring any volunteer coach to attend the coaching certification workshop before they can be approved as a volunteer coach. As a side note, one of the greates "other sport" athletes of all time did not come into his own until he was a junior in high school. Maybe Michael Jordan's coach did not have enough practice space either.

comments: In response to a couple of posts- Smith from Ripley is one of the best wrestlers in WV, Stover from Ripley was beaten twice, once by Bonecutter from Pt. Pleasant and once by Weese from St. Albans. I still don't understand why Josh Tucker from Riverside at 7-1 doesn't finish 2nd or even get to wrestle Bonecutter. I think it would have been a pretty even match. Weese lost to Tucker 6-2 and Bonecutter 7-3 and beat Stover 17-8. One thing is for certain all four wrestlers deserve attention in the state rankings at 152 lbs. I want to congratulate all of the Riverside wrestlers on a very good job. Paul Carter 2nd and Derek Hastings 4th at 103, Dustin Kinser 3rd at 130, Derek Coutz 3rd at 140, Kris Lowery at 145, and David Wojo 3rd and T.J. Richards 4th at 275.

comments: Just want to congratulate the eagles on their fine performances at Berkeley Springs Inv. and the Berkeley Co. Championships. The eagles were able to take 4th place at the BSI with two starters out (Josh Grim, and Mike Mckinney) and three starters not making weight the 2nd day. Can't help but wonder what would have happened with a full lineup. Bradley Ammons finals match was very sweet even though Brad lost in the last few seconds he has shown remarkable improvement this season and hopefully this will continue. At the Berkeley Co. Championships a very impressive performance by the eagles dominating two rivals. Dustin Foltz showed great determination and perserverance in his match and is showing that he is improving with each match. And Josh Jones in his OT loss to Byrd from Martinsburg extremely good match. Jones you almost had him with the one throw but just went out of bounds. Keep working hard and see where it takes you. Want to wish good luck to Robert Jarrett. I have not heard officially why he is not coaching this year but I have heard rumors. Whatever the case may be you were a great asset to the kids and hopefully one day you will be back. If your out there reading this Rob hope things go okay and good luck and thanks for all you've given the program. Like to give credit where it's due to Mussleman and Martinsburg both teams looked pretty good at the BCC. Martinsburg has a # of forfeits but the kids they do have are doing well. The connor brothers have been looking especially good. People may need to watch out for these two come states time. Mussleman has some kids who are improving and coming along well. Kagle is doing a good job with this team and look for Mussleman to become a force on down the line. I saw a recent result of the match between Jefferson and Williamsport MD and it appears Codie Gustines is 140 with Hawes 145 and Corie at 152. My question where was Steve Reynolds and Artie Badger for this meet? If those two would have been there Jefferson would have won. And where has Davis been? With those three in the lineup Jefferson is looking extremely good. Anyway want to wish good luck to the eagles on there upcoming match a Wheeling Park I doubt I will be there as work may keep me here. But I will be watching for results on here. Want to wish everyone out there eagles and non eagles a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I played football and wrestled and played in a state championship game and never missed a beat in wrestling. If anything it should help them be in shape more when their wrestling season begins. To all the heavyweights complaining about the big difference between 215 and 275 either lose weight or deal with it. MOst heavyweights could help themselves out by dropping down to 215 and becoming more healthy. Remember size doesn't matter in this sport.

comments: In response to the AA/A heavyweight picks. There is only one returning state place winner from last year and that is the heavyweight from weir. I think Patrick McGillian from Oak Glen should get some consideration considering that he wrestled mostly jv last year but when he did get his chance on varsity he beat the kid from weir 8-0 when McGillian only weighed 205. Since he is 250 now and beat the only remaining AA/A placewinner I think that makes him the frontrunner at states for heavyweight.

He put himself in position to make history by wrestling any takers so to speak. I just thought it would be exciting to watch Mitch Smith at these incredibly tough tournaments. I have no doubt that Mitch would much more than hold his own with anyone in the nation. I also find it amazing that Mr. Smith is only a sophmore.

However, I do think it would be interesting to see Mitch Smith in some of the big tournaments- Reno, Ironman, Beast of the East, etc. He has wrestled in and won some of the toughest national tournaments and it would be interesting to see how he would do in those high school events.

This very well might be true... But there are alot of good wrestlers besides me and him that wrestle in the 275lbs class. There has also been some trashy talking going on between what looks like a Wirt County fan and a Hoover fan... I'm flattered, really, that it has been said that I will win the states. But i would like the trash talk to stop cause it is unneccessary. Its true that i did beat Lowe, but he had already wrestled a match that night and i hadn't. I just beat him on that day. Im not doubting myself that it can beat him again.. Or the next time he may beat me.. but that is why u wrestle, to see who wins. As to the ones that are saying that Lowe(Wirt) and Anderson(H.Hoover) is going to win the AA/A 275 championship has no reason to predict that. This season has just started let the kids get some matches underneath them before we go predicting. But, for right now at this time Andy Fegal from Weir has to have the upper hand on the rest of the field he is the only returning state placer from 275 last year. Beside nobody know who all is out there Oak Glen has a tough Patrick McMillen which everyone knows that Oak Glen wrestlers are very tough and you know that Calhoun is going to have a very strong heavyweight this year the always do. Well good luck to all the wrestlers and do your best and let your action for you.

comments: I, too, have all the respect in the world for Mitch Smith(Ripley). I believe that either he or Brandon Rader(Parkersburg) are the best wrestlers in WV. I, too, believe that Mitch may go undefeated, however I think that will be a shame. I was once told by a man that I believe to be the best wrestling coach in WV, at any level, that if you are undefeated, you haven't wrestled anybody. I understand that Mitch is a nineteen(I think) time national champ, but if he wrestled a tougher in-season high school schedule, he would most likely get his record blemished along the way. I think he uses the off-season to keep himself motivated and to push his skills to a higher level. I wish Mitch was in a position to represent WV at Reno, the Ironman, Beast of the East,etc.. With all the transfers of atheletes around the state, maybe Mitch will make it to these tournaments in the next year or two. Wouldn't that be fun.

comments: To Coach Moore,
I am one of those coaches who has to cut kids at tryouts. I hate it. This year I had over 50 kids come out and our space is 42 feet x 42 feet. This limits the number we can have due to safety. We have singlets, head gear and warmups for 30 kids which I raised the money for by selling lollipops before and after school. Most tournaments will NOT let you bring extra kids. I have entered two full teams wherever possible. (This sometimes costs the school $200.00 per week.) You must understand that we get little if any recognition or support for wrestling in this part of the state unless we do it ourselves. At the middle schools we are not allowed to have more than 1 asst. coach and no volunteers are allowed to work with the kids. A parent is not even allowed to time kids with a stop watch at track practice! Our county will not even allow us to award trophies to our kids who win the County Championship. There is no team trophy and no individual trophies. In the past parents have donated money and we had to award them in a church parking lot off of school property by car headlights after the event. Coaches were told we would no longer be allowed to coach if we gave them out at the tournament even if parents paid for them. Now that some Pee Wee programs are making progress in our area, I do not "cut" kids per se, I "refer them to Pee Wee." You see, sixth graders are also eligible in our county and a rotund 145 or 155 lb. sixth grader may be competing with a "minihulk - linebacker" 8th grader for a spot on the team and have to wrestle kids like Blennerhassett and Edison's ninth graders at WSAZ. The sixth graders can wrestle a year of Pee Wee and come back as a competitive seventh grader and most do.

Another problem is forfeits - some teams we compete against do not have full teams - why keep 4 or 5 95 lb'ers if they all just get forfeits? I agree with most of your sentiments but our situation is much different from yours. My son wrestled against Cougars and Patriots as well as the Wood County High schools in his career and I have seen first hand the quality of wrestlers you program turns out. You are to be applauded for your efforts. Our Pee Wee programs accept all comers as well and we greatly appreciate what they do to help build our teams. I wish we could get the whole state to become as "wrestling crazy." as your area. We are making progress - now it's a bigger deal to the kids to be on the wrestling team than on the basketball team at our school and some kids are choosing that route. Once we can expose them to the sport and hopefully get their hand raised a few times, they love it as all of us do. I hope this clarifies why we almost have to limit our numbers.
Happy Holidays,
Coach LeMaster

i understand the numbers of kids in the lower brackets may warrant that many wt. brackets BUT i don't see very many 119's wrestling the 160 brackett; do you? that means a wrestlers weight does make a difference. if it didn't, most of you wouldn't work so hard at maintaing your weight to wrestle in a specific brackett. there are also some 220 studs that can do really well wrestling 275 but not too many. most lightweight wrestlers maintain a weight to qualify them for a brackett they can win.......that's a nice choice to have. 215 has turned into a great brackett to watch and the competition is formadable.
i, for one, would love to see a 240 or 250 brackett to put things on a more even keel. bigger guys would come out of the woodwork to wresstle in a more equal enviroment.

It makes the whole state look good on a national level. Particular applause goes out to place-winners Robert Shysler, Shane Grogg (who finished ahead of nationally ranked Dustin Schlatter) Brandon Rader, Derrick Knapp, Bryce Pickens, Lou Thomas and Ryan Dearman. Way to go, guys!

Martinsburg came in at 9th with 112 pts. Musselman came in at 11th with 85.5 pts. and Berkeley Springs came in at 14th with 77.5 pts. As for Troy Foltz he did not make weight Sat. morning. He was half a pound over. And unlike the comment in the Journal He does have PRIDE. He is giving up 15 to 20 pounds to wrestle at 145 and is working very hard to maintain his weight. Congrats to Danny, Brad, Joe, Justin Z., Derrick, and Josh J. for placing and to all the Eagle Wrestlers for their efforts! BEST OF LUCK Wednesday at Hedg. at the Berkeley Co.Tournament!!!

comments: From the master of the million dollar knee lift,

Congrats to PSHS and PHS on your finishes at the Ironman. Looks like PHS has a strong team early in the season which they usually seem to peak at the states and start slow. We'll see if they can sustain the pace and not get hurt at the Beast of the East or Powerade. Special congrats to Rader and Thomas.

PSHS is in the shape that PHS is usually in, trying to recover from a long extended season of football. This may actually help the bigger guys to peak a little later in the season, don't get hurt meanwhile!

Coach Schenny did well with his schedule this year, South will have to settle for having the 2nd toughest schedule in the state for once.

Congrats to all the young South wrestlers that won matches at the Ironman, little bit tougher than the days of Jr. High, eh men? Don't want to single any matches out, Norman and Smith looked good. Older Smith looked good against Williamson of PHS. That one will be interesting in January and at the Regionals, keep your head focused on the Regionals, Sean.

I've got Gordon Solie on hold on the other line...Until next time...Go South.

comments: congrats to all placers at the brooke classic ! it was a good week-end. Oak Glen did a great job running the tourney.

ALL schools and wrestlers BE READY for next years Wendy's Brooke Classic. It will be held in our new facility. words will not do justice as to how nice this new facility is going to be....you'll have to see it to believe it. the classic will be on the correct weekend and promises to be the largest and most competetive Classic ever.

BEWARE the BROOKE BRUINS this year. Team wise ...... the strongest we've seen at Brooke in a long time. Individually the strongest we've seen in a long time. i will submit no predictions (like i've been reading here!) but don't be surprised to see lots of green & gold in the finals no matter where we're at.

The Wheeling Duals is a GREAT tournament that we ALL look forward to each year.........but to say it is more difficult than the Wendy's Brooke Classic........not correct. different format, different competition. by no means an easy tourney but you got to agree it's not the same. can't wait to get there.

referee's were in good form for an early tourney...don't you all agree?

GO BRUINS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

comments: After talking to a coach the other night at the South Duel I was informed that some areas in our state, the Junior Highs and Middle Schools cut wrestlers to get to a certain number. Wow this is unbelievable to me since i have seen over the years some kids not become solid wrestlers until they were around for a few years. I thought it was every kids right to be part of a school function. This is a major problem that shoud be delt with in the near future. I am proud to say that when our Club goes to wrestle both duels and tournaments all kids wrestle. We do not hold wrestle offs giving us more time to teach. I do understand that we are a private club but please take care or the kids first and formost. I have always believed that even in football and basketball no score should be kept the first half so all kids can have the pleasure of being involved in school sports.Keeping score the second half or even adding a quarter would help this problem. Does it teach the kids anything watching from the bench. The really sad thing cutting kids is that if they were part of the program some would last longer in school. I have witnessed this in High School some kids make it through the school year and pass just because they were part of the schools team!!

comments: In regard to the scoring question there are 15 classes in Middle school / Jr. High. 75,80,85,90,95,100,105,115,125,135,145,155,170,190,275 Thus 15 x 6 = 90 possible points to be divided between 2 teams, of course the total may be lower due to decisions, tech falls, etc. If there were only 14 you would be correct of a max of 84 points. Colleges have even fewer classes. - (and of course, Basketball has no class - Grin)

On another note, thanks to Braxton Middle and Coaches for a well run tournament yesterday. The facility was beautiful, the officiating was excellent, the table workers were efficient and the food was great! (Even a hospitality room FOR WRESTLERS. I would also like to thank the athletic director, police officer and trainer who helped to care for my injured wrestler until the ambulance arrived. You will never know how much it was appreciated by his team mates and family. Although it looked grave, his injury was not serious, he is resting comfortably and will be back in action before you know it. Happy Holidays and looking forward to seeing many of you wrestlers and coaches at the Olympic Pool tournament at Point Pleasant on Dec. 20-21.

Hopefully Zack Evans and Justin Boyden will be back soon. Jay Thomas is out for the season after having shoulder surgery. Josh Evans turned in a dominant performance going undefeated at 152 and will be in the mix to wrestle on Saturday night at states. Good job also to Ryan Bostic-112, Joe McQuillen-135 and Tyler Wilson-140 on going 8-2 and placing in the top 3 for the weekend. To all of the Flying Eagles, keep working hard in practice and wrestle tough ! I also apologize for causing a stir with the post on Tyler Wilson and Mitch Smith's match at Nitro. comments: First off, I would like to say Great Job to Coach Archer on a well run tournament this past weekend. The first of the two teams that impressed me was Huntington High. They wrestled at their own pace and with great skill. They totally dominated the whole tournament this weekend. Also wrestling well this weekend was former AAA school Point Pleasant. Which the mat poll had ranked #8 in AA. I can assure you that they will finish much higher than that. They beat #7 Greenbrier West with no trouble and #10 in AAA Woodrow Wilson was not much trouble either. Some standouts individually that I saw were Steve Riner, Huntington, Jeremy Ray, Huntington, which pinned Nick Duncan of Point Pleasant. Josh Evans, Beckley, also wrestled well. The upsets this weekend were Waldeck, Huntington, over Nott, Point Pleasant. And Morris, Herbert Hoover, Over Bonecutter, Point Pleasant. But both Nott & Bonecutter were sick with the flu. You see from the trained eye it was easy to see that both atheletes were suffering from mild nausia, and fever. With these symptoms it is nearly impossible to perform at their peak level. Of course, I know this because I'm a doctor. It is my medical opinion that the next time they meet, it could be a different outcome.

They went 5-0 their first day (that is all I watched) without their starting 215 or HWT. From what I understand, the second day they lost their starting 152 and 160. I also think Jesse Nott was unable to wrestle for most of Saturday. It appears a severe stomach virus is going around the town of Point, and three of the four mentioned got it. Apparently their HWT just had an accident of some sort and wound up with stitches. I just thought I would give credit where credit is due.

Ryan Bumgardner of Ritchie county was very talented that kid had really impressed me with his speed and strength. And Pat Bell of Greenbrier West. He was a very technical wrestler and showed a lot of heart last year finishing up a match injured at the states. Wes has done well this far, he has pinned both his opponets in the first period. As for 160, 171, 189, 215 common they just walked off the football field give them a break. South will be tough. comments: The Flying Eagles opened up the season with a decent performance last night. After earning a ranking of 10th in the AAA pre-season poll they were thumped by Nitro and Ripley. They beat Logan. The loss of Zack Evans, Jay Thomas and Justin Boyden for the time being has taken away alot of fire power from the Eagles. Josh Evans was dominating in his 3 wins and is a legit contender at 152. The exciting match of the night for the Eagles was Tyler Wilson vs Mitch Smith at 140. Wilson led 6-2 midway into the 2nd period but Smith then stuck him as he attempted to Granby. Mitch, in the end, showed why he is ranked among the best in the Nation and why he will win his 2nd State title. Joe McQuillen, Nick Llado and Matt Terry were solid and will continue to improve during the year. If some of the Eagles get into the right weight classes and they get a few back they could still make some noise. Good Luck Flying Eagles !!!!!

I'll have to agree with you when you put Mike Mason in the best ever wv wrestlers catagory. He should definitely be one of the very top picks in this catagory. Anyone who has wrestled with him would know this and not dispute this fact. Mike is a champion on the mat as well as off the mat as a person, and is one of the best examples of the true philosophy of this sport (hard-work and dedication).

Also, good luck to the Big Red Wrestlers at the Ironman. Kick some a** and take names.

To the person saying that the brooke classic is the toughest they are correct, and east has had 3 champions so far in that tournament Jeff Noechel 215 senior year fourth place jr year, Chris Satterfield 275 jr year, runner up senior year, and Matt miller 171 junior and senior year So, as you can see east fairmont can run with the best and they will rise to the occasion in huntington.

Yes I am a proud and vocal fan of Parkersburg South Wrestling, but I also respect any young man out there who wretles anywhere. Being a former wresler, I know what it takes in the wrestling room and the off season to stay in condition and to be prepared. A duel between the rest of the state and a Wood co. team would be interesting but to claim an outright victory or even a rout is crazy. If it was that easy then we wouldn't even wrestle and just decide the outcome before the season even started on reputation alone. Anyone can be beat at anytime in this state no matter where you are from and that is what makes the season so fun. Don't count out a wrestler from anywhere, upsets do happen.

comments: with all this talk about Hughes and Smith at 152 i think that it could be the TOP weight class in AA/A this season....also could be in AAA also with Bliss and Lord. Here is possible what we could be dealing with at states.

AA/A
152
1. Shane Smith (Williamstown)
2. Eric Metz (calhoun)
3. Casey Hughes (cameron)
4. Matt Wharton (Oak Glen)
5. Jesse Nott (point pleasant)
6. Seth Moales (herbert hoover)

AAA
152
1. Danny Lord (hedgesville)
2. Phil Bliss (brooke)
3. Codie Gustines (jefferson)
4. Bryce Pickens (parkersburg south)
5. Justin Boyden (woodrow wilson)
6. Chris Gibbs (cabell midland)

And this list goes on and on......and just think at the winners choice it could be.......QuarterFinals action like Lord vs.Boyden or Smith vs. Gusines or Boyden vs. Nott. I mean that tournement is going to be awesome this year at least at 152. Lord, Gustines, Smith, Boyden, Nott, and thats just the ones off the top of my head. I am willing to bet that some people move out of this weight class. Good Luck to all of these wrestlers!!!!!

comments: To Southside: Now you're attacking grandmas... People can say just about anything they want. I don't have to agree with it, and I sometimes don't. No problem. Fortunately, there are some in the Wood wrestling community that recognize outstanding team and individual efforts outside of their own county. To be such a rural state, West Virginia has been, in my opinion, a good wrestling state. There are areas or pockets around the state that obviously excel, while others may not even have programs, but overall, we have something to be proud of and keep trying to build on. I know I've talked to people who think very highly of WV coaches and our school programs here. When I go to the state tournament, I try to take in some of the action that doesn't involve my favorite team. There are some tremendous accomplishments and stories played out in the AAA and AA-A divisions. I enjoy seeing entire sections of fans from South, or wherever, stand and cheer through a match. I also enjoy seeing those two rows of fans from Ripley, or wherever, stand and cheer when their kid wins a tough battle. The ovation a kid gets from becoming a four-timer, regardless of school size, or when a kid rebounds from some personal hardship to win a title are things we shouldn't miss. It may be when a kid wrestles beyond everybody's expectations and places in the state tournament. There have been many stories. It's all part of the drama and excitement that makes wrestling so much fun. Good luck to all wrestlers. Do extra if you want to be a champion. You can do it.

comments: Let me weigh-in on the Smith/Lord/Bliss/Hughes debate. ALL are excellent, but with vastly different styles. Hughes may meet Bliss tonight and just reached 152 today. Don't know how far or long Bliss has cut, but Hughes has dropped twenty pounds in two weeks and shouln't be at his energized best yet. Lord is a physical wrestler that should meet Hughes next weekend (barring injury). He shoud be better energized by then and while Hughes doesn't usually power his opponents as a first choice, he usually does really well with power wrestlers (Leach, Lynch, etc.)who push the action. As for Shane Smith and Hughes, they met in pee wee state finals two/three years ago (Smith 6-5). Again, Hughes was hobbled by ankle injury, but needs no excuses/apologies. These matches were sheer fun, and barring injuries, shoud be awesome to watch. There are certainly lots of other talented wrestlers I have overlooked, and undefeated seasons are as much luck as talent (unless you can do it twice), so let's get started. By the way, I don't think Hughes is necessarily staying at 152, so enjoy the fireworks while they last. I hope "running" isn't an issue, but I believe you should wrestle the weight class that you end up at after all the hard work is done. Stewart is looking a 152 also. Wouldn't that be even more spicey?!!

I agree that the Wood county teams are unquestionably the best teams in WV, but to say they are,as wrestling fan puts it "unstopable... the WV team wouldnt even touch them" is not only offensive to the rest of the state but also a bit of a stretch. Last year's AAA state tournament had 7 champions from Wood county and 7 from the rest of the state. From that fact one would assume that it would be a very close match, not a blowout. This does not even consider the AA wrestlers that could also possibly knock off a couple of the Wood county champs. The year before that there were only 3 Wood county champs. Be proud of your teams but don't be offensive to others. Good luck to all wrestlers this season.

comments: I would have to agree with the person who thinks that the winners from a south / phs duel could take anyone in the state. If only the people from around the state could come watch how hard not only the high school wrestlers but even the pee-wee wrestlers work. From the age of 4 years old sometimes little wrestlers will work hard with one goal that is in mind. After they go watch their first high school match, they work so hard to be sometime on the mat as a high school wrestler, and to also have their name on the wall as a WV State Champion. Not taking anything away from any other team from the state, but just to see the dedication and will from all these kids from pee-wee to high school is amazing. I just wish they could actually have a match like that, so everyone will stop arguing about it on here and it would get settled. With PHS/South on top.

How many PA state champions and NCAA scholarship recipients wrestled in Winner's Choice last year? I am a loyal West Virginian, but the truth is most of our state champs would have difficulty even qualifying for the PA state tourney if for no other reason than there are 10x the number of quality wrestlers. If they don't, then you won't. It's that simple. I just think its great the two best wrestlers in AA-A might have a chance at clashing. If they don't then Smith will have to wrestle Stewart from Cameron and if I remember correctly from Junior High and christmas past (its an expression i guess :) ) I believe that Stewart beat Shane Smith and if you want to throw this in, he is one of the only WV wrestlers I knowof the same age that owns victories over Mitch Smith. Stewart has been held out the last two years towards the end due to injury, so if he comes back healthy then I would say its a safe bet that he and Shane Smith would be a great matchup, although I am not giving him the nod just yet. Smith has already proven himself. Then throw in Cashdollar or Wharton and try to tell me who is going to c! ome out #1 at 152 or 160 in that region. Its going to be a war i'm tellin ya!

P.S. I agree with super chin. WINNERS CHOICE all the way.

I express my opinions, others express theirs, thats great. I`m not insulting anyone ,any more than anyone else does when they make their opinions, ideas or feelings known. Also stop making exuses about why Wood County wins and others don`t,we won`t feel sorry for you.Opinions vary, try not to take them personal.

comments: I think someone hit the nail on the head in the Hughes debate, that being "if he stays healthy." Casey has a history of pushing himself too hard and too far, and getting hurt in the process. I saw that kid straight power out from bottom at OVAC last year with the match virtually on the line (down by 1 or 2 in the 3rd) against a very strong kid from Oak Glen (Six I believe?), only to injure his knee in the process and ruin his season. A healthy Hughes is a tough bill for any wrestler, including Lord or Smith. Personally, I couldn't call it in a match between any of the three because they are just too close. Nevertheless, until someone does defeat Smith I say he's the man to beat due to his win over Lord last season. However to say Hughes couldn't stay within 3 points of Lord is a little far-fetched, but only if he's healthy.

comments: I'm glad someone mentioned Morrison on here! He's a very good wrestler in his own right and deserves some notice. Although I don't know if he'd beat Bliss or Hughes regular season at their weights and when they are healthy (although I believe he could), his victories are quite impressive. And I will admit Bliss was wrestling 2 weights up after season and Hughes 3 weights in his first match back from a bad injury, but lets show some respect! This kid is good and might be a sleeper pick early on so watch out for him!

pretty bold for u to think that a kid who already won states as a freshman couldnt stay within 3 points of Lord. But, I guess we'll get to see at Berkeley Springs in 2 weeks. Also just so you know, I like Casey Hughes over Lord if they meet and I like him over Smith later on in the season as well. The kid is too quick for them if he stays healthy.

It is clear that you are a more than proud supporter of Parkersburg area wrestling, although I see no point to your "cool" idea. It sounds to me like you've gotten a little carried away. Comments like that could only come from one with a very big head. I found it shameful that you seem to toss aside Williamstown. On their A-AA level, they have had one of the most successful programs in the state. When you show this level of arrogance toward our entire state, it only creates a little more disdain for Parkersburg. You are criticizing many many excellent programs when you talk this way. I have quite a bit of experience with WV wrestling, so I'm not naive. A Wood County all-stars team quite possibly could beat a best of the rest squad, but it would certainly not be a "blowout", as you put it. Southsider, go ahead and be proud of Parkersburg wrestling. Most of us share in that pride to a certain degree. Try to appreciate, however, the other excellent programs that have to work extra hard just to have a chance. Put any of the many dedicated wrestlers out there into an organization such as Wood County Wrestling, with the ultimate in budget, booster support, facilities, fan base, feeder programs, and morale, and they too would be able to reach that elite level. I was a wrestler, and I know that to be the best you have to beat the best. PHS and PSHS undoubtedly outwork the vast majority of their opponents. All I'm saying is there is more at work here than just the kids on the mat that makes Parkersburg so strong. Don't put everybody else down so easily.

comments: OK first i would like to say that YES the OVAC is the toughest CONFERENCE in the state....but we are not ranking the state meet, the regionals or conferneces.....ok.....just the top REGULAR season tournys......and yes the Brooke classic is a good tourny, but i would still put the Domino Duals and the Winner's Choice over it. sorry thats just me.

comments: I think that Wharton will not move away from 152 just because of Smith. There is a thing called a team concept and thats what OG goes by, and it shows. If it is better for the team for him to go at 152, then thats where he'll be...regardless of who else is in the weight.

comments: Oak Glen's McGillian is an underated wrestler and he has state tournament experience from 2 years ago at 215 when he filled in for injured Greg Six. And on top of that, he practiced with 3 time state champion Joey Caughy. I think that is great experience right there. This year he practices with Whitehill who is at 215. Whitehill has improved a ton since last year. Look out for him this year in the state tourny. Also to look out for from Oak Glen this year are Ganeau, Whittington, Flowers, Wharton, and Cashdollar.

comments: I'ld like to say something about the High school state championships. I don't think it should be split up into a/aa & aaa.I think their should be a state dual meet divided into a/aa & aaa. Then the next week have the individual tournament with a/aa & aaa combined. They should split up the regions like they have been and have 32 wrestlers per weight class. Their sould also have seatings because what if there's 2 defending 3x state champions and they meet in the semi's that's just not right. In other states they do it like NJ and OH why can't we.please comment I want to Know what other people think about this. There sould only be one state champion!!!!!!!!

comments: If you were really a Point Wrestling Fan, you would know that we are now AA...that's for 1. Number two, for us dropping down to AA, that gives alot of the decent wrestlers a great chance to shine. We had a few kids last year who wrestled 2 weight classes up do very well, and a rookie who won 21 matches with knowing three moves. The Point team has all but 2 back...including about 6 state qualifiers...so when they say Duncan will win states, listen, because Mitch Smith isn't there anymore...however, I wish he was...

comments: I`ve got a cool idea.Have South and PHS wrestle a dual.Take the winners. Then take everybody else,in WV, and have a tourny. Take those winners.A week later have a dual, Wood County Allstars VS. WV Allstars. Then watch WC kick some tail. There would be no questions then.I would add Williamstown to the Wood County team but there is only who would have a chance to make the team, but its not a given, so WV can have him.I don`t think WC would shut out WV but it would be a blow out.

comments: correct me if I`m wrong but I believe at the 2002 MAWA qualifer at PSHS. Hughes of Cameron and Bliss of Brooke both got beat by Steve Morrison of South.Morrison was South`s 171. who would normally wrestle 145 or 152 but couldn`t start at those classes. Barring injuries he should start at 152 this year, and opponents should be scared.

Lord is a fine young man and a very good wrestler but is no way the "best technician in WV". He's quick and confident, but can be beaten.

comments: Casey Hughes is an excellent AA wrestler but saying he would be within 3 points of Danny Lord is a streach. And here is a novel idea how bout we hold off on the predictions till we see what weight everyone is wrestling im sure 2 weeks won't kill anybody.

comments: After much thought, here's what I feel are the best five tourneys in WV (in alphabetical order):
Berkeley Springs Invite
Domino Duals-Wheeling
OVAC Tourney-Wheeling
Wendy's Classic-Brooke
Winner's Choice-Fairmont
If I had to rank them from toughest to weakest, that might be hard. I don't think any are weak although I would put the Domino Duals fifth on the list. The other four...depends on the year! Good luck to all wrestlers this season. It won't be long now!

December 2, 2002
comments: The heavyweight from Oak Glen (Patrick McGillian) does have state tournament experience. He wrestled 215 for OG his sophomore year (because Greg Six broke his leg). He didn't place, but his two losses came at the hands of place winners and the scores were close. So I agree that EXPERIENCE will count...

comments: I believe that Goneau has the advantage in a Valles-Goneau rematch just because of the program at Oak Glen. If two kids are wrestling and they are both of about equal talent and one is from Oak Glen, then I'm puttin my money on the Oak Glen kid every time because they always seem to find a way to win.

December 2, 2002
comments: people seem to forget that there are a few of last years placers and continders in the heavy weight class left to wrestle. don't count out the young men who wrestled in the state tournament last year. they will have a big advantage over this kid from oak glen. EXPERIENCE

From: Cameron Proud
comments: That "some kid from Cameron" is Casey Hughes, and he's a good one. Won a state title as Freshman, but a knee injury put him out majority of last season, and severely disabled him in states where he eventually was forced to default out of the tournament (from semis to 6th) because of it. If he gets in shape, Hughes may be the one who goes undefeated. Lord is very good, maybe better, maybe not, but don't overlook this kid like many have.
