comments: Re: Comments by upset... I'm pretty sure we attended the same tournament and wish to show the other side of the coin. As to making weight this was a middle school and jr high event. As a coach I don't ask my kids to cut vast amounts of weight for reasons too many to list here so basically we enter at the weight where we are at the end of a hard practice the day before and discipline ourselves not to gain until after weigh ins. Many times there is a variation of scales from school to school. Many times kids have been "over" when we left our school and made it easily when we got to the tournament. The reverse is also true. All of my kids made weight there except one who missed practice due to an emergency the day before. He was quickly eliminated. Some parents may have driven 2 or more hours. If their child misses weight by 1/4 pound and can't wrestle how will they feel about our sport? Without the support of our parents middle school/ jr high teams are doomed. It's not a matter of discipline as long as every team and event doesn't have perfectly matched electronic scales this will still occur. It sounds as if perhaps you or someone you knew was eliminated by a wrestler who didn't make weight and moved up. If they are good enough to win at a higher weight class they deserve to win.

As to the single elimination. The letter about the tournament said it would be restricted to the first 10 teams whose checks were received. However several checks came in the mail on the same day. How do you decide who to let in? If there are more than 12 wrestlers in a 16 man bracket in a one day tournament and it's double elimination then some wrestlers could end up with six matches in a single day which is illegal. Thus their only option was to make the first round single elimination or limit it to 12 entries per weight class. How would you have felt if your coach returned from the seeding meeting and said "Sorry all your running and watching your diet this week was for nothing. The bracket was up to 12 and they couldn't let you in?"

By making the rounds single elimination the tournament could also let second string wrestlers participate. As the coach of 2 second string kids who made the semifinals I was glad of that. I was in no way involved in running the tournament in question simply a coach who took a team there. My team did not win the event. I just wanted to point out another view and let you know of some of the reasoning involved.

I also attended another event this year where we had to decide at about 12:15 AM the next morning to flip a coin for 3rd and 4th places because it would have been a 6th match for some of the wrestlers. Thankfully the tournament this past Saturday was over at 9:00 PM.

Hopefully this will clear up some hard feelings
Don't get bummed out - keep wrestling!

Well thanks for the nice complaiment and I look farward to here about some more form you. Thanx

comments: I want to address the Jan.10 post regarding the Preston Mat Club Tournament. I brought my sons down from the Northern Panhandle and felt that the competion was the BEST we have seen and we primarily wrestle in Western Pennsylvania which is considered top notch. With the demise of the Parkersburg Cougar Classic this will become the top open youth meet in WV. Could they have used another 2 mats or so--yes--but how can one anticipate 100 more entries than the previous year? I saw several kids who did not win trophies proudly wearing their participation award--a cool "dog tag"-- a nice touch from a supposedly "money hungry" tournament committee. As for the comments that kids should not have been allowed to change weight at weigh-ins SHAME ON YOU. The little kids give up their entire Saturday and you want them to watch their calories when they are 10 years old? If a young boy is hungry the night before the tournament should he go to bed that way because his mom or dad sent in the form 3 weeks earlier not knowing if he would hit a growth spurt? In fact I think this web site should go so far as to refuse to post YOUTH tournaments that do not allow weight changes on the morning of weigh ins. In sum thanks Dr. Miller and all the Preston Co. volunteers for giving up YOUR time for our kids.
Editor's note: Thanks, Mr Nogay, for your kind words. As many readers know, I am the tournament director for the Preston Mat Club tournament to which you refer.

I should point out that the post further down the page to which you refer may refer to the Preston Tournament, or it may refer to another HS or JR High tournament which was held in the tri-state area this weekend. I deleted the name of the tournament, but did post the comments as there are some significant points raised.

I'd like to thank all the coaches, parents, and wrestlers who attended our tournament. We had our share of problems I readily admit - notably that we didn't get finished until 10:45 PM. I agree that is much too late. We have never before run past 7:30 PM, and usually finish before that. We do try to make this a user friendly tournament by taking call-ins, walk-ins, and weight changes. Several complained about accepting walkin's - that had we not done this, the tournament would have been smaller and we would have finished earlier. That is true; however, in order to get quality brackets, you need numbers. We started the day with 453 kids on bracket, and ended the day with 481. This is the first time our walk-in's exceeded the scratches. Very few scratched from the tournament. Usually our tournament takes place in a blizzard and there are significant scratches. Saturday, we benefitted by (or were victims of) good weather.

We try to learn from our shortcomings and improve the tournament every year. One option for next year is this: We could use our auxiliary gym directly adjacent to the main gym, and expand to 6 or 7 mats. We used only 4 mats in the main gym last Saturday. We could have added a 5th in the main gym, and we could put one or two additional mats in the auxiliary gym.

I have head that some tournaments will spread out into auxiliary gyms, and even stages and everywhere else. I would need to figure out how to utilize the auxiliary gym. Seating is limited in the aux gym. Maybe we could run the 5-6 year olds in the aux gym on 2 mats in the AM, and the 13-15 year olds in the aux gym in the afternoon? If we did that I anticipate complaints from parents and coaches if they have 2 kids wrestling in 2 differernt gyms. Also, if one gym finishes before the other, then for efficiency sake we should have remaining matches take place in either gym. This will cause a crowd control problem. We could run both gyms and all wrestlers take the next available mat throughout the tournament in either the main or aux gym -- but then there would be continuous shuffling of the crowd from one gym to another and crowd control will be even worse. If we run 2 gyms and take the next available mat, then I need to figure out how to get wrestlers on-deck. In one gym, we keep on-deck matches hanging on the bout-slip tree to signal to the announcer and escorts which mats need on-deck wrestlers. If the announcer cannot view all the mats, he will have problems knowing which mat needs wrestlers. Has anyone been to such tournaments? How would be the best way to do this?

Anyway, thanks again Mr Nogay four your encouraging words. To tell you the truth I was just about ready to chuck the whole thing. But now, maybe we will just try to figure out how to improve for next year...

comments: I would like for everyone to know Matt Simmons is back in wrestling after missing last season with a leg injury. He told me that he is a little rusty right now. Also at the Nitro tournament he gave Jared Walters (state champ at 130 a year ago) of Cabell Midland all he wanted for three rounds. They went back and forth. Walters won the match by points. Simmons wrestled 130 at Nitro but is planning on wreslting 125 at Fairmont next weekend. Matt has been fighting the injury bug. He should be all healed up for next weekend though. Check out this article on him that was in the paper.

comments: What's up with Parkersburg HS? Everytime I check out their results they list several forfeits. Early on I figured that the wrestlers who played football were needing some extra practices to be eligible or were attempting to make weight. But I still see results from early January that indicate forfeits in the same weight classes. Making weight or eligibility should have been settled by now. Hope all is well in Parkersburg. A strong team at PHS helps the region as well.

comments: To SOUTH WRESTLING FAN: Several points of interest from Harpers Ferry wrestling. Yes, we have five overnight trips this year and travel about 3000 miles. We pay for virtually everything except for tournament entry fees which come from our athletic department. (We've got booster parents like you wouldn't believe because otherwise we wouldn't even have wrestling program at our school.) You wanted to know our schedule. Here it is: (As of Jan. 8 the team is 25-0 with an average score of 63-17 over each of its 25 opponents.)
Dec. 10-11: Independence BNI Duals (9-0 record 2 weigh-ins)
Dec. 17-18: Sherrard Duals (8-0 2 weigh-ins)
Dec. 29: McKinley Duals (four teams total 3-0 1 weigh-in)
Jan. 8: Buckhannon-Upshur Duals (5-0 2 weigh-ins)
Jan. 11: Charles Town Jr. High (home) (1 match 1 weigh-in)
Jan. 15: Spencer Duals (4 duals 2 weigh-ins)
Feb. 1: Charles Town Jr. High (away) (1 match 1 weigh-in)
Feb. 3: Harpers Ferry Tri (home) (2 matches 1 weigh-in)
Feb. 11-12: Harpers Ferry Duals Invitational (10 matches 2 weigh-ins)

Note: Because we have an extensive "B" squad we constantly juggle our starting 7th and 8th grade wrestlers in matches or tournaments where they are not needed; this gives our back-ups a chance to get quality wrestling time regardless of the outcome of their matches. The team is constantly planning ahead about when a wrestler will be needed and when he can sit out matches or tournaments. The team has already used 17 different line-ups. We know what you are thinking and no we won't go over 14 individual weigh-ins with any of our wrestlers. Come watch us. We're not too bad a team.

I like your style ! A jr. high or middle school can go up or down in quality of program by the moving on of one talented age group of wrestlers from one season to the next. Independence Jr. High is a good example. The loss of Blake Johns Sexton Greene Rhodes Barnette ect. to Independence High School have them rebuilding this season. I wonder which is tougher to beat last years teams who may have lost the bulk of their talent or this years contenders who truely exist and who's team members are together right now. Hmmm..........

Chertow's & Jordon's) As long as both make weight and stay healthy and as long as the brackets fall properly I see this as the 103 championship match. Either one will be more than deserving as both are very hard workers as well as good kids.

I STRONGLY AGREE THAT THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO MY POINT WAS TO SIMPLY ELIMINATE THE CONTROVERSY ABOUT HOW UNFAIR IT IS TO HAVE TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF PROGRAMS COMPETING TOGETHER. I READ IT ON THE INTERNET AND HERE IT FROM INDIVIDUALS THEMSELVES. WE SHOULD ALL SIT DOWN AND WRITE OUR CONGRESSMAN OR BOARD OF EDUCATION(WHO EVER IT MAYBE THAT CAN HELP US GET THE SAME PROGRAM STATEWIDE) UNTIL THEN I DONT THINK WE SHOULD LIVE IN A "WHAT-IF" WORLD.

TO: TIGER FAN: TO RESPOND TO THE ARTICLE ABOUT BLENNERHASSETT NOT BEING IN THE WSAZ LAST YEAR? I LOOKED INTO IT AND THIS YEAR IS THE FIRST YEAR WOOD COUNTY SCHOOL SYSTEM HAS LET THEM GO OUT OF THE COUNTY TO COMPETE IN ANY ATHLETIC EVENT. AND THEY LIMITED IT TO JUST "ONE" OUT OF COUNTY EVENT. AND SINCE THE WSAZ IS THE TOURNAMENT THAT BRINGS IN THE COMPETITION I FIGURE THEY"LL USE THEIR "ONE" TRIP TO VISIT COACH ARCHER AND HIS CLASS ACT TOURNAMENT. WHO KNOWS COACH OLDHAM JUST MIGHT GIVE THEM A VISIT. P.S. CAN YOU POST HARPERS FERRY'S SCHEDULE? IM STILL CURIOUS.

comments: To South Wrestling Fan:
You urged Harpers Ferry to compete in the WSAZ tournament to determine the best junior high/middle school teams in the state. But you also said that head-to-head competition also determines the better team. Harpers Ferry chose to wrestle only duals this year (43) and no bracket tournaments. It's just a preference; they are not ducking anyone. Also I see that Blennerhasset did not enter the tournament last year. Were they ducking anyone? I doubt it. There are a lot of good teams that cannot compete in the tournament for lots of reasons and for Harpers Ferry it couldn't be fit in their schedule.

One last thought. This season Harpers Ferry (20-0 overall) is 7-0 over the top four finishers from the 1999 WSAZ and 11-0 over the top nine finishers from last year. Hmmm.

comments: As for the difference between Jr High and Middle School teams. Its more than just having 9th graders against 8th graders. Our Junior High went from 7-8-9 to 6-7-8. Sixth graders are not able to wrestle. So, its like one third of our eligible wrestlers disappeared overnight. We went from full squad to hardly any squad in one year. All of you 7-8-9 Junior Highs out there -- make one third of your students disappear and see what kind of team you have.

I used the state tournament results from the last two years to total up the total number of points per region. I found in AA Regions 1 and 3 are much stronger than Region 2 and 4. So here I lined up a new alignment which makes the regions more equal.

When I first started wrestling as a sophomore I accidentally called Talon a "matmaid" of course I was quickly correctly she is a mat statistician. So I asked what is a mat maid then? She replied Someone who cleans up blood. In her defintion of the word that is a matmaid. But to Parkersburg South the Matmaids do more than keep stats. So therefore you cannot logically refer to them all as mat statisticians. They have numerous folks who do many tasks. SO they collectively refer to themselves as a group. "the matmaids". I had no idea how these P Burg South folks operated until i stayed next door to them at states last year. They definetly are not cheerleaders but more boosters who don't just root them on but aid in their attainment of achieving success within the sport.

comments: In response to the ALL CAPS COMMENTS from South Wrestling Fan. I guess there are all sorts of viewpoints on the Jr. High vs Middle School controversy. I agree that the whole state needs to be one or the other. Poor Kanawha county is half middle and half Jr. High. No one is complaining that we want our ninth graders back. Until you are ready to send a high school team against one that also has college freshmen have some empathy for the 12 year old seventh grade boys that wrestle 16 year old freshmen. That's no different from an 8 year old vs a 12 year old right? Can you see the point? All the middle schools want is an even playing field. Besides the obvious age and maturity differences there is the huge advantage of the atmosphere and competition of a high school practice room as opposed to a middle school one. (if they are lucky enough to even have a room to practice in ). In order to have a fair comparison it must be 7-8-9 vs 7-8-9. In addition freshman teams often have to forfeit the lower weight classes as they have no little guys and middle school heavyweights are most often 200 lbs and under while freshman heavies are often approaching the limit. Simple suggestion leading to fewer forfeits better competion more balance more excitment more interest more participation better sport. How can anyone argue with that?
