comments: The circle of honor wrestling camp was this week at east fairmont junior high it is a good local camp some kids missed it but try to attend next year they review over the moves you know and the ones you dont live wrestling conditioning and some great counselors really make you a tougher wrestler thanks to brad petracca the camp director if you did not attend this year make it a priority to attend next it is different than most camps after the camp the counselors stay after and wrestle with you individually an hour after practice if you want it is really good so attend next year if you can

comments: Thank goodness that common sense and clear heads prevailed by making the mouthguard rule NOT MANDATORY. In my years of coaching I have never, ever seen a mouth injury any more serious than a bloody lip (almost always caused by braces). To restrict the breathing of all competitors in order to help guard against a rare dental injury was simply not practical. In addition, we would have needed to deal with the wrestler who ala boxing simply spits out his mouthpiece when he gets in trouble either negating the effectiveness of the mouthguard or causing the stoppage of a match in progress. On behalf of wrestlers and coaches whom I have discussed this with, I can only offer a resounding thanks!

Editor's note: Several teams in the Mountain State will be undergoing coaching changes next year. Some have been noted on this website, some have not. Some are routine changes in personnel, some are controversial. We want to make due note of coaching changes; however, we feel that there is nothing to be gained by airing controversy, charges, and allegations which may surround such changes in personnel. Sorry...

To reference of June 17 of the new Weir High coach this is just a rumor going around nothing has been voted on yet, how can you keep rumors off of the forum? I feel that the June 17 comment should be deleted from the forum until the official voting.
(Another) Editor's note: My apologies, and the "annoncement" has been deleted. I should stick to my policy (which I forget from time to time) of never posting a "substantial" announcement unless there is a verifiable email address attached for confirmation if necessary.

I now know why his team has been so successful. Not only that he knows how to make teaching interesting.

comments: In regards to the question about the new rules about weight cutting, I think it is better for all of us. Eventhough most wrestlers would rather test the limits of cutting weight, it is not safe. Think back to when the sport of wrestling lost three college wrestlers to weight cutting... Jeff Reese of Michigan, Jack Saylor at Campbell University, and Joe La Rosa of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The three never thought about what might happen if they cut too much weight. Now look at the outcome of it all...
Honestly, the new rule has made us stronger wrestlers. It does feel weird not cutting weight and not eating for days though. With this new rule, at least all of us know the feeling of wrestling at our own weight. Plus all the wrestlers don't have pale skin, and look like they wrestle levels below what they can during the weeks of practice in preperation of the next matches. I personally have to respect the rule, because I am not the smartest person alive, and someone needs to tell me enough is enough. Just shut up and wrestle!
Oh yeah, Steve Kindley, E-Mail me sometime........

comments: Because of booming enrollment, three more outstanding coaches and wrestlers have been added to 1999 Olympian Camp Staff. This is in addition to the many men advertised in camp brochure. 1996 OLYMPIC COACH, Joe Seay will be at Olympian Camp June 23-24. Coach Seay is currently head coach of Sunkist Kids, our #1 elite level club in the nation. Joe was Head Coach at Oklahoma State, prior to leaving college coaching to focus on helping Olympic Level athletes. PENN STATE GRADUATES and 1999 ALL AMERICANS, Clint Musser and Biff Walizer, have joined camp staff June 19-26. Biff and Clint combined for six State Championships in high school and were leaders of the Penn State team this season. Gold Medal Training Camp, June 20-26 is filled. However, I still have openings in Olympian Technique Camp & Junior Olympian Camp, June 23-26. Fee for this camp is $299. This includes 3 nights and 4 days at Gateway Best Western Hotel as well as instruction and training. I still have openings in some camps week of June 27 & July 3 in WV as well as August 1 in State College, PA.
Check http://www.olympianwrestling.com for more camp info and summer training tips.

comments: I know this may be a little late, but as summer nears, and all you fellow wrestlers start looking for camps, I challenge you to test your metal performance as well as your physical performance. I am speaking to Juniors in particular, take advantade of MOuntaineer Boy's State, this is a great oppurtunity to learn how to become a leader: look at some of the names who attended last year;
Chris Altobello, Keyser (171)
Keithen Branch, St. Mary's (171)
Matt Bryant-Buckhannon-Upshur
Jon Dauch-Ravenswood (152)
Sean Junkins-Frankfort (125)
John Madia- RC Byrd (189)
Alex McClung- Oak Glen (275)
Matt Queen- RC Byd (152)
Jason Jones- Oak Glen (160)
John Ramsey-North Marion (145)
Alex Reed - Point Pleseant (103)
Josh Williams- Big Creek (140)
Brendan Welsh- Bishop Donahue (215)
Adam Wilson-Woodrow Wilson

These are a few guys who I'm sure you've heard of a two were state champs, one former state champ, (and) several placewinners, ... So, take advantage of this oppurtunity, wrestlers are leaders, and leaders are the "men of tommorrow..."(inside joke, you'll find out at boys state.

My name is Mike Fitzgerald, I am a wrestling official from North Carolina. I have about 23 years of officiating experience in Baseball, Softball, Soccer & Wrestling. The last 15 years being exclusively wrestling & officiating all 3 major styles: Scholastic, Freestyle & Greco-Roman.. I also competed in HS, College & after college and wrestling in 2 Junior Olympic National Championships. I have reviewed the changes you are recommending and have some comments.
- The new Stalling Chart has too many exceptions & situations to hit. There are too many combinations depending on what is called.
- It is not necessary for Points to be given. Coaches simply want "Free Points" so there wrestlers do not have to work.
- This new system in my opinion will actually discourage officials from calling stalling or force more "Double Stalling" calls so as not to penalize wrestlers.
- You will probably have fewer disqualifications rather than more. Stalling will not change, simply it will be called less.
- The Double Stalling call should be eliminated because it accomplishes nothing except to keep the coaches quite & give the officials an "out" from making the hard calls.
- If there is stalling in the Tie Breaker it should be called, this is one of the places were it occurs the most. A stalemate call again accomplishes nothing.

I write this because of my love of the sport. Scholastic wrestling has become very stagnent over the past several years with the last major change being with "Defferment of Choice" change several years ago. Since then, nothing of consequence has happened to improve the sport.

International wrestling (Freestyle & Greco) went to the "unlimited stalling without points" shortly before the 1992 Olympics. Despite all of the same concerns this change has been one of the best changes for the sport. Officials actually have less impact on the sport because points get earned through moves, not officials penalty calls. I have also found that there are fewer stalling (passivitiy) calls made which means less stoppage of the matches.

The unlimited stalling is simple, is not situational & still allows points to be put on the board by the wrestlers. The "Flee" call will still be available for officials for extreme violations. The coaches concerns about a wrestler "Riding his Bike" are not valid. If it is a close match 1 or 2 points the official is going to call stalling regardless of the rules. If however, a wrestler is winning 14-2 & a coach wants stalling it is not valid. The winning wrestler has shown obvious superiority over his opponent & if he slows down some then that is acceptable.

For officials not wanting to make the "Big Call" they either need more training, mat time or simply need to decide if they should be on the mat. Officials are put on the mat to make the "Big Call". If they can't do that does that official have the skill & courage to protect the athletes from being injured especially if it is a prestigious coach or wrestler.

I would like to hear back from you. I spend 8-9 months on the mat, this year I have been on the mat every weekend except Easter since mid-February. In that time I have done, JR, HS levels & US Senior Nationals with the best wrestlers in the country (Brands, Gaffhari, McIlravy, etc).

Coaches, Parents and Wrestlers -
Olympian Camp will be here soon. Campers will receive confirmation letters, directions to camp and other important info in the mail next week.

If you have not applied yet, there are still some openings. We are accepting applications for all camps if postmarked by June 2, at which time we will be closing some weeks. Don't miss this great opportunity!!

Weeks of June 19 and July 24 are almost filled. Weeks of July 3 and August 1 both still have 30 spots each left. Remember, these are the weeks that Olympic Gold Medalist, Kurt Angle, will be the guest clinician. Make plans to attend!

I just acquired some used full size mats and smaller home mats. All were recently reconditioned and are now in good shape. Some will not be available until after my summer camp, while others are available for immediate delivery. Full size mat prices range from $1800 - $3900 depending on size and condition. These are great deals compared to $6000 plus for a new mat. Home mats are $400 for 10x10 and $576 for a 12x12.

For more info on camps, mats or instructional videos e mail chertow@themat.com

Have a great day!

comments: I think the mouthpiece rule is a very dumb rule. Some kids have enough trouble breathing as it is let alone with a mouthpiece. i think the stall rule is a lot better this year, yet the original is by far the best. well all WV wrestlers who are still wrestlin good luck and be safe.

comments: I may be alone on this one but I'm FOR the new mouthguard rule. There is no way that I oppose it. If you're in good shape, it will not be that much of a burden. Second, I had 4 stitches put in my mouth this past year due to violently slamming an opponent. My mouth landed on his hip bone when I came down and if wouldn't have pinned him in the next 10 seconds, I would have lost because of blood time [bled for 20 minutes]. Animal, when you say that this is not football, you're right. I think wrestling can be more violent and I love it, but we all have to be smart about it. Feel free to argue or agree with me. Later guys.

comments: I agree with the wrestlers who think the mouth guard rule is not needed in wrestling. For kids who have braces, they might be worthwhile. But they could do more harm than good if someone is rendered unconscious. Who can fans and wrestlers write to to express their displeasure with a dumb rule with hopes that maybe common sense might prevail before the season starts???

comments: I truly agree with all the complaints about the new mouth guard rule. I think that it is about the worst thing that I have ever heard. I am a HEAVY-WEIGHT and it is already hard to breathe ecspecially if you have an overtime match or even a 3 period match. I know every body says it has to do with being in shape, but I know that when I have a tough opponent I don't need some obstacle in my mouth interfearing with my breathing.
Thank you.

comments: the new mouthguard rule is HORRIBLE!!!!!!! whoever made it up is the dumbest person in the WORLD!!! the coaches association are off the mark trying to stop blood time, now we'll just call more injury time. people who use mouthguards can't breathe right. my point is at least you can't fake blood, unlike injury or just plain being tired.

Rob is a very energetic young man with a wealth of wrestling knowledge and the patience of a saint. Last fall he brought Mitch Clark (Ohio State), 1998 NCAA Champion @ 177# to his class and this spring Jason Ward, 2 time WV State Champion and 1999 National Runner-up worked with the students during many sessions. Rob is a very positive role model who does so very much for the kids who are involved in the sport he obviously loves. I'd like to say thanks to Rob for working with the boys these past nine weeks, making a demanding sport fun and maintaining his always positive attitude.
Thanks for everything Rob!

comments: I also dislike the mouthgaurd rule. I have wore a mouthgaurd when I had braces right before my high school year. It was ok in the first period, but after that it was hard to breath in, you had cotton mouth and someone was always slobbering on the mats. I personally do not want to roll in someones slobber, but if it's the rule, i will do anything to wrestle, i just dislike it a lot. It will cause more problems then it will help.

comments: Thank you Mr. Stanley and Coach Archer for taking WV wrestling to the next level. The next step should be to eliminate the WVSSAC's off-season limitations. I can't believe that such a rule has lasted so long with such little opposition. Without the removal of these restrictions, WVwrestling will never be considered legitament. Congradulations to everyone who went down and made the team. For those of you that did, try to go to a camp and learn as much about rules and technique as you can. There is serious discussion of making Powerlifting a recognized sport since many football and WRESTLERS benefit from it during the off season. Many states already have with the season starting March and ending late July.
Already looking forward to next season and wish everyone good health and success for the future.

jason made two wrestlers happy at university. Ash beat him 8-0 and Dustin Bowers beat him in an exhibition match 6-5. Dustin got a takedown with 4 seconds left in the match. Dustin is hedgesvilles 112 pounder and is going to be a good one. These two matches are a result of not preparing beforehand. Jason had not wrestled since the finals of the state tournament. Hopefully he learned a lesson. Incidently the three state champs in the 125 class were all former Parkersburg Cougars and were teammates on the cougars. They traveled to many tournaments together.

Since the tournement starts early in the morning, you might be able to win a couple matches and leave, but I dont know how big the tournement will be. As long as you make the top 3 you can go. doesnt matter if you get 2nd and forfiet your final match
