comments: info on posts regarding who may have transferred to WV from PA. someone on pa wrestling site forum stated that John Ferens had transferred from Connellsville High School to WV school. On their website he was ranked 2nd in WPIAL and 8th in state for upcoming season so if it is true that he transferred he should definitely provide some competition for WV boys.

comments: I agreee that the WVSSAC needs to change the weight classes back. Also as a coach I have a serious problem with sending an 11 year old sixth grader out on the mat with a 16 year old ninth grader who is nearly a grown man. I think we need to either be all middle schools (6-7-8) and high school (9-10-11-12) or allow the freshmen and middle schools to combine. I know I will have 4-5 sixth graders who will make my squad of 30 as they have wrestled several years of Pee Wee and are quite talented... but I hate to see them go out at WSAZ and face a ninth grade stud and get punished. This is just a way that kids and parents will get turned off to the oldest and greatest of all sports. I don't know the answer but we need to do something!

THAT CAN HANG WITH SOUTH!!!!!!!THIS YEARS TEAM JUST MIGHT BE THE BEST SOUTH TEAM TO STEP ON THE MAT !!!!

comments: I just saw Brandon Slay defeated during the Gold Medal match. It is a shame that so much of the match results are in the control of the officials. I know the rules are intended to keep the action going but it is becoming the referees discretion more than the skills of two competitors that decide a match. I hope that we keep the rule changes emphasizing wrestlers scoring points rather than referees awarding points.

comments: What I am thinking is we as wrestlers should make this Buckhannon Open the best Pre-season tournament around. Any wrestler past or presant should come out and see where they stand... I am sure as an Open division wrestlers may want a chance at some other wrestlers they never got to wrestle before. Add to that they might have even lost to them in the past. Heck what does everyone have to lose??? The BU Open is on November 4... Make plans to come wrestle... Also all this talk about the wrestler from Pa. if he is that good come prove it to those who are doubting him at this time... I would have to say that Pickens might be the best this state has to offer around that weight.

comments: As to the great conspiracy! My son last a 6th grader could not wrestle in his middle school this year he's a 7th grader at 75lbs. His team often competes with teams in Virginia with 70 and 75 pound weight classes. Coaches that concern themselves because they can't fill weight classes should spend more time working to improve the individual wrestlers on their team. As for the committee responsible for these decsions why aren't they looking out for the student athletes and to expose as many students to wrestling as possible. The WVSSAC should imediately recognize their mistake and fall back to last years weight classes for the benefit of the sport and the students.

You don't even want to step onto the mat with him I guarantee you. I am not going to sit here and brag on his merits there are way too many. But I'll tell you this if you want the best look him up. I warn you though he's no average chump. By the way the Cameron team will agree he's not even the best wrestler on this team!! Watch your back when you make threats like this one you may just get what you ask for.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
A new Greco-Roman Champion is born on Sept. 27, 2000 at approximately 10:10 pm (EST) as 3x Greco-Roman Olympic Champion and undefeated at 62-0, Alexander Keralin was knocked off the top of the Greco-Roman Wrestling world, as the American unknown wrestler, Rolan Gardener had topped off the Russian in a 1-0 upset in Sydney, Australia this evening. Gardener had held Keralin 0-0 through the first round and then got a 1-0 lead as a caution and penalty on Keralin was gotten when they were locked up and Keralin unlocked his grip. After two tries, Keralin could not do his patented Russian pull back, which hadn't worked in the Olympics very often this year (but defeated Gardener earlier in the International competitions in 1996), and the match was 1-0 at the end of regulation. Keralin tried once more to take the lead and win as he was awarded position and he chose the up position. There he tried a gut wrench and then the pull back but being tired as he was, he lost the match. Gardener then stopped wrestling at about 8:58 left in the match as both men just stood for the final 2 seconds and Gardner was awarded the win. This is the biggest upset in Olympic history and I wanted to post it first on www.wvmat.com.

comments: I think the whole deal with this best wrestler to never win a state title is only for the fact that one is either first or forgotten. I was one of those wrestlers on the short end of the stick as far as a state title. As state champ said in his post sometimes people who finish second train harder than some people who finishes first. State titles are won because one wrestler wrestled better than the other on that given time. That is just the facts of wrestling. Wrestlers are never forgotten. If they were that good I am sure fans and others will always remember their accomplishments.

I think it will be a great match so lets not put any more pressure on these kids right now. By the way I saw Zubay up here at class today so yes folks he graduated. Also this forum is not a waste. It is very good to get some issues out into the open for discussion. Trash talk is what ruins this site. Let's not trash each other because we are all working for the same goal which is a very competitive state to wrestle in which we already have. Predictions for the next 4 timer? If I had one pick I think I will go with Mitch Smith. He is a very good wrestler and has a legit shot at 4. Well fellas enjoy the upcoming season. Remember guys work on your academics as well. I never did very well in school because I was into wrestling so much. I wish I would have tried a little harder now because wrestling is great but it isn't life guys. Wrestling will get you into the paper but your grades are going to take you far in life. They won't pay you a salary to takedown people for a living. Play hard study harder......

comments: In response to the posts concerning the weight class changes in the jr. high/middle school divisions (75 to 80 and 83 to 85). There was no great conspiracy. The classes were changed during the rules meeting in April before 6th graders were approved for middle school sports. The reason for the change was that many coaches felt that there was an excess of forfeits being received in the 75 lb. class and expressed that concern to their representitives to the rules committee. I am sure that the men who represented the rest of the state's coaches ( Larry Shaw-Oak Glen Ed Gilson-Independence Sterling Beane-Braxton Co. to name a few...) would do nothing to harm any childs chance to wrestle and were only trying to improve things by cutting down on forfeits. If there is a problem after trying the new classes for a season they can always be changed again next spring. Just find out who the representitives are and give them a call before the rules meeting and they'll be glad to express your opinions to the powers that be.

comments: Someone was asking for predictions on the Oak Glen/South dual in Jan 2001. I am not going to be the one to make one because of the many factors involved such as injury academics where wrestlers will end in respective weight classes etc I do know that Oak Glen returns a strong team as does South and if certain young men from both schools end up facing each other it could make for an enjoyable event. Some possibilities that come to mind are Zubay vs Grogg Belville vs.Daggett and Six vs. McCartney. I don't know if South has anyone who can stick with Noel or Caughey but we will see soon.I think it is great that two great wrestling schools can get together the next two seasons and put on a show for us fans.I hope that sportmanship will override the intensity that is sure to exist.Good luck to both schools in January !

comments: I enjoy the trash that has been posted on the forum. I think it is pointless to argue who the best non-champ is or who should be on the team of the decade. But the trash is better than a nonactive forum and it helps pass the time until the season starts. I'd rather read about what could have been than listen to cheerleaders rave about Barry Bearhug with his blue eyes. So until Nov. 13th keep up the below average work. My pick for best non-champ - Josh Dearth. He beat a two time champ (twice) and was beaten by a probable three time champion. And then there is Robbie Shank who was a High School All-American and made some fans all-decade team. Pointless isn't it but it's fun to read and argue about and helps pass the time.

September 25, 2000
comments: For the person who feels this site is a big waste of time and that all anyone ever does is argue it's a FORUM for people to discuss whatever they choose regarding West Virginia wrestling. The season is still a few months away and if people choose to pass the time discussing past wrestlers so be it. You sound like you want an argument rather than avoid one.

comments: I also agree with Old Coach and Jim LeMasters. Why would we change the weight classes in middle school/junior high wrestling in the same year that we have included sixth graders in all sports except football. In my mind obviously the sixth grade rule was not made for middle school wrestlers. If it were the 75 lb. weight class would not have been changed. I coach at a middle school who has had a 75 lb. wrestler more often than not and our philosophy has always been "the more kids involved - big and small- the better." We have filled all weight classes - 75 to hvwt. in the last 2 yrs. Isn't it great to be involved in a sport that size does not matter? I'm a middle school coach who tells her kids everyday to "suck it up and wrestle." I guess I have to tell them this year that the junior highs really did win.

comments: We are wasting a ton of space on the forum talking about who was the best wrestler "not" to win the state when their are many from many schools who were very deserving.Maybe we can concentrate on the upcoming season and who will be the "next" state champ etc.Maybe the editor could poll some coaches and come out with some pre-season team and individual poll to see who are the favorites ? I realize that weights cannot be decided until the wrestlers are set but a little fun for us wrestling-starved fans! Thanks and have a great day !

From: comments on the greatest wrestler to not win a state title
comments: I think there are some great wrestlers that have been named for the best wrestler in this category I would like to throw in my opinion. I too think Robbie Archer must be one of the best wretslers ever to not win a state title. I think that Jeff Hughes of Cameron is probably one of the best to not win one also. I mean as a freshman he wrestled Buddy McKeen..then a senior and later that year became a 2 time champ and the OW of the tourney..to a 7-4 dual that is still remembered by both I am sure to this day. Then see where he wrestled Mike Miller 4 time state champ from Wirt to an overtime match as a sophomore miller then a junior. In which there was a controversy over some back points by Hughes that were not scored and would have given him the victory. As a junior he made the state finals in a stacked 140 pound weight class only to fall to Miller once again in the finals in a match that was closer than the score ..... As a senior he finished fourth in the states but would have been in the finals had it not been for (an untimely loss to Schindler). . He then would have wrestled Phillip Kesner who was beaten by Schindler. Don't you think that's pretty good? He has victories over some of the best ever to grace the state and other states. He has wrestled the elite in 6 states to some of the most exciting matches I have ever seen. He deserves credit and the title state champ. That is why I think he is one of the best to ever wrestle in WV period and especially to never win a state championship. Also look for Tyler Hughes his brother who has yet to win a state championship. He has one more year though and should be a lock somewhere this year. But if he by some chance didn't win he would also be one of the best ever. Thanks for your time!

comments: I agree with Old Coach and not just because I too am an Old Coach ... I think one of the greatest things about our sport is that anybody with any body can wrestle. It provides the best way for smaller kids to get involved in athletics (too short for (shudder) basketball and too light for football). I think we needed the 75lb class especially with 6th graders eligible. The weight classes finally showed some sensible thought when we added the 190 lb class which was a desperate need. (166 vs 275 = 99lbs difference!) Perhaps in time we can get the 75 lb back. I know the rationale is that some schools can't find 75's and it leads to forfeits. I coach in a modest sized middle school (Milton) and I looked it up in the last 6 years we have had no less than 17 different kids wrestle 75. That's 17 kids who would not have been able to compete. Of those 17 5 eventually placed at WSAZ and 2 became WSAZ champs 1 became a state champ in high school. One is now coaching and 2! are still wrestling in high school. If not for the 75lb class these kids might never have started into the sport. The idea as I see it is to encourage more participation not limit it.

comments: the six grade rule is a terrible one. The sixth grader must be attending a middle school(5-8). A sixth grader at an elementary school (k-6) is not allowed to participate. Marion Co. has both middle schools and elementary schools. Some 6 graders are allowed to participate and others are not!! Horrible I didn't believe it at first but I asked the SSAC for a clarification. Only the ones attending middle schools are allowed to participate. comments: To the Hedgesville fan I believe the JJWA preseason tournament is usually held the weekend before the official start of practice which would be Nov. 11 this year while the Cougar Invitational is tradionally held the first weekend in Jan. which would be Jan. 4-5. However with new coach Scott Fortney this may be subject to change. I think a lot of people are overlooking Jefferson this year but that's just my opinion. And regarding the middle school/junior high weight classes one of my weight sheets did say that the 80 and 85 weight classes would be used rather than 75 and 83. However it said at the top of the weight classes that these "new" weights have been in effect since the 1997-98 season which is obviously not the case. I think these new weight classes would be very unfair to middle schools especially since 6th graders are now allowed to wrestle (so I've heard). Since there are alot of 6th graders who would like to wrestle and who weigh between 60-70 lbs. this would not only be unfair to them but maybe even prevent them from wrestling if they weighed less than 65 lbs. Right now a boy has to weigh at least 60 lbs. to wrestle at 75 and I've seen some very fine wrestlers who weigh under 65 lbs. I think to be fair to middle schools and the new 6th grade wrestlers we need to keep the 75 lb. weight class.

Also another article on the Western PA gold medal streak features Bruce Baumgartner and Kurt Angle. I tossed my paper already but I think it had a schedule of events in it you can look further on the web site.

To the person asking who was the best wrestler to NOT win a state title the best I saw was Alex Shook and Barron Bryan both of John Marshall graduated late 1980's.

comments: It seems like this is going to be an interesting year in A/AA wrestling. Independence is on the upswing Oak Glen is still filling a strong well-coached team and Cameron returns a veteran senior-laden squad. Wouldn't it be interesting if some of these powers plus the LKC warriors all showed up at the same tourney? How about the Berkley Springs event in December? That match features 3-4 states per year AAA comp as well as A/AA and you can't hide your records under an intracounty schedule. I believe Oak Glen is the king until unseated but what other team has finished in the top 4 of A/AA states repeatedly in the last 10 years? That would be Cameron.

For a team that has been unable to fill two or three weight classes fot the last three years a little bet might be the over the top answer. Certain wrestlers at Cameron have a bet with certain large agressive and highly athletic basketball players at Cameron that could rock the wrestling world this year. IF Cameron wins the state in A football this year (not a totally unthinkable thought) these 215 and 290lb hoopsters agreed to don singlets for one last run at the wrestling title. Big deal? Both are ex-wrestlers extremely strong and just plain animals. Keep watching for updates.

Another rumor has it that two outstanding up and coming (and past state champs at Cameron) are planning to forego this year's grappling to lift for football next year. We hope the great football coach that has built his dynasty encourages these two luminaries to compete. Updates to follow. Independence - bring that squad to Berkley and let's see if you are ready to step back up to your previous glory.

comments: I think one of the best wrestlers to come out of AA was Independence's own Jeremy Hart. He was a two time state champion MOW of the 96 tournament and an all american (4th in the high school nationals) this year in the NCAA's he lost to the national champion by one point. Definately not to be overlooked.

I'd like to hear other peoples thoughts on who is predicted to do well. Especially thoughts on how Cary Kolat is expected to do. Also as the olympics are probably going to be televised tape delayed it would be nice if anyone who was informed on the TV schedule might send a quick message to let us know when our team will be in the spotlight.

Maybe just a rumor but I heard it through a reliable source. 2 more months till practice can't wait. Some info on college wrestlers from WV. Regalbuto doing well at WVU he started practicing the first day he walked on campus and is doing 3 a days right now with some very tough competition. He is very focused on winning at the next level. Likewise Dustin Bowers at West Liberty also practicing hard right now. These two have a great work ethic and hopefully it will pay off on the next level. Hope to see alot of people at the wvu open this year. Also for high school tournaments I don't know if this is too early to ask but does anyone know the dates of the Buckhanon preseason tournament and the JJWA preseason tournament.

I have also noticed that wrestling is probably the cleanest sport not defiled with the trash talk and cheating that is found all too much in other sports. I am glad that there are people trying to keep wrestling pure with respect sheer hard work. I would like to thank all the people who do this and I will be back with more wrestlers to watch!! Don't forget to tell me if you feel someone is left out that deserves recognition.

I am sorry to infrom everyone but South is not the only school to get on here and talk trash about people. And not everyone from South trashes people some people try to fix that problem. "Do not judge or yea shall be judged as you judge others." From a Gospel So in other words stop saying or basing your imphasis on South because you know that we aren't the only school that does it and not everyone one from South does it. And 9-10 times it isn't the wrestlers it is fans or parents. So please don't base appereance by what you see on the forum. Because not everyone is like that from our school. And if people don't talk trash about us we wouldn't talk trash about them. I'm not saying an eye for an eye but really if people would stop it we wouldn't have that problem. the object is to talk about wrestling not who is better than whoever. So drop it. Just think if you talk trash on here and meet this really nice person you say your name and this person doesn't like you because of what you put on here. Also to the editor a lot is slipping threw lately or maybe not maybe someone is just looking at it. And just a suggestion instead of taking a whole message out how about just the part that is trashing someone. Please take it as it is nothing less and nothing more.
Editor's note: Yes, I agree. Some of this is getting old....

Thanks to many contributors, a web page for wrestling in South Parkersburg has become a reality. The people who have help get this project off the ground are to numerous to mention. The site is called "Little Kanawha Cauliflower Club" and it can be found at http://www.casinternet.net/~brentster/lkcc/index.html. I have 39 years of Wood County Jr. High wrestling compiled and will soon be adding 37 years of Wood County Recreation Wrestling as well as archives for the Wood County AAU and the Patriots Wrestling Club. Again, thanks to all who have helped with this project.

I mean really people if you really think that this or that person is the best you just should wait and figure it out at state. As for polls that is okay but don't try out ranking one wrestler from 171 to 125. I mean really how would you ever figure that out? MOW is based on skill and sportsmanship so who would win then? Stummped you didn't I.?.

comments: I would also like to add Moats and Jared Ross on my wrestlers to watch. Throw in a little bit of DJ Yoders and a dash of Michael Fausolettos. I admit Michael DJ and Jared didn't go too far in the states. But look at what they did in their own time. Jared who wrestled Dankovchik of Weir a 6th place finisher and a favorite for a championship this year to 3 very close matches has the ability to win it all at 103. I watched him at Weir and two more times against Dankovchik and believed that with a little more strength he could have beat him. Ross has good technique and had many scoring moves on Dankovchik that could have worked had it not been for the obvious difference in strength. Yoders lost only 4 matches in Jr. High but 3 were to the same kid Corey Adkins of MDSV who also should be watched if he may wrestle for varsity. Yoders one of the "Special Teams bandits" of the CHS football team has earned respect and will perform well for the varsity this year.Last there is Michael. He defeated the highly regarded Jason Roberts of Oak Glen and was wrestling Justin Stanely state champ to a 1-0 match( I believe) before breaking his arm and being unable to continue. Thanks for listening again and I will leave you with this. "Skill comes from dilligence"-Tony Purler Clarion Assistant wrestling coach.

comments: This is the first letter I have written to the forum but I feel it is long over due. Being a former wrestler and the parent of a current high school wrestler I have followed West Virginia high school wrestling for over 35 years. I check the forum daily to keep abreast of current wrestlers and the hs teams. Not to take anything away from the South Parkersburg program---it is fantastic but the trash that South's fans write in the forum is becoming ridiculous absurd preposterous asinine and above all idiotic. Give me a break there are alot of fine wrestlers in our state---not all of them are from Parkersburg. South's fan speak as though their team is the only one in the state. There are a good many under rated wrestlers who are never mentioned in the forum. During the state tournament last year I watched many fine wrestlers put on a heart warming show of courage and skill.....not all of them became state champs or to even place in the top six(6) of their weight class and NOT ALL OF THEM WERE FROM SOUTH. Just to give these individuals some credit I will mention them as they come to mind....Jon Delligatti Jeff Courtney Andy Travise Blaine Mayle Brain Motts Nathain Kinsley Matt Sternthal Aaron Futten Jeff Noechel Chris Satterfield Dustin Barnes Matt Stevens Drew Toth and Wes Lane. There are far too many more to mention but I watched each of these wrestlers excel at the state tournament. Each of them gave their full heart to a sport that I truely love. Think back to the tournament and recall each of these wrestler's matches.....no need to trash talk when you are all heart. I hope each of these young men know they are top notch and A-1 in a sport which can be ruined by absurd loud mouthed fans. In closing I wish each WV wrestler and his school the best of luck in the 2000--2001 year. Let's keep the trash to ourselves and let the wrestlers determine who is the best on the MAT!
