QUESTION OF TRADITION- Good discussions. Not trying to upset anyone, just stating my opinion and hopefully generating discussion. I compiled stats for state championships by schools. I was surprised that by my count only 22 high schools have ever claimed WV state titles in wrestling. As for counties, Wood County has 31 team championships. Hancock-9, Raliegh-9, Marshall–8, Ohio-6, Marion–4, Roane-4. I consider Hancock, Ohio, and Brooke (1 title) northern panhandle and two of the three have more team championships than Marion so I don’t think the previous argument holds water. As for the statement about consolidation in my earlier post, I was referring to Warwood & Wheeling and not the Marion County Schools. However, didn’t Fairmont Senior absorb Rivesville in the 80s.

As for a team comprised of West, North, and (even East) wrestlers, it would indeed be tough. However, many years Marion schools are strong in the same weight classes and a combined team still might not be strong enough to beat a combined team from Wood, Marshall, or certainly a combined Panhandle team.

comments: I think that the toughest weight classes this year will be between 103,125,152, or 160. The best wrestlers are in these weight classes. Also a lot of wrestlers will be moving up from differnt weight classes into these four from what i have been hearing. One last thing remember to eat healthy and stay in shape to all wrestlers!!!! comments: Someone asked how many wrestlers are on South's football team.I went over the roster and recognized about 10 or 11 wrestlers.South has qualified for the playoffs in football and depending on how far they go,some may not have enough practices to make the first match against Cabell Midland. I beleive Cabell had the same problem last year vs. South. One football who many have failed to mention(including myself)is Steve Morrison. He would probably wrestle in the 135-145 weight class and he sure will stick you on the football field!South will have a very balanced team this year and several are capable of winning it all.Good luck to all involved in this great sport !

comments: For those who are curious about the 103 pound class in AAA this year, a good question to ask is what are anyones chances against Robert Shyver from PHS. Barring injury or a major upset, Mr. Shyver is THE man to beat at 103. Has anyone in WV ever beaten him ?

After that who knows what wrestlers they may have picked up from other schools.

comments: Has there been a wrestling coach hired at Harper's Ferry Junior High? I'll be the first coach to be concerned and I'm sure not the last. As we're promoting wrestling in the middle schools and junior highs in the state, we can't do without the coaches who have taken Harper's Ferry wrestling to the elite. I understand that both coaches have resigned and I can only hope that the program will continue as it has in the past. I'm one who appreciates the expertise from "Old Coach" as does my student-athletes.

I'm sure each coach and parent will explain to their student-athlete as I understand the weigh-in rule. This rule only protects the athlete and I, for one am glad it has been implemented.

comments: I totally agree that South has lost two outstanding coaches this year......it is very dissappointing. But we can go on if we work as a team. I think the thing that should come first is the wrestlers, we need to come together as a wrestling community for our kids. I have always supported the team and believe these kids have what it takes to do it again. But we as adults and COACHES need to support our kids... not tear them down. These are young adults and we need to support them. They are our future! If you look for only negative thats what you will get ...if you look for the positive thats what you will get. It is very unfortunate that we lost those two outstanding coaches they had alot to give to the program we will definitely miss them. I for one intend to see Parkersburg South do it again!!! I know that South has the best booster program in the state and I wish to thank all of them for all they have done. They help to make this program what it is. Parent's and alumni from years past you should be proud!!!

comments: Does anyone have any concerns on the new weigh-in changes? As I understand it, if my wrestlers weigh-in at home at 7:00 a.m.,are all on weight, ride 2 hours to a match and weigh in on the opposing schools scale and are 1/4 pound over, we are basically done. Their are differences in scales and this rule does not allow for that. At tournaments you can weigh in one time on another scale but not at duals. Why not allow the traveling team to bring a certified digital scale and any overweight wrestler(on either team) can weigh in on either scale. If the rule is meant to protect kids from dehydrating why not do this. The other alternative is to make sure all your kids are a pound under which does more to hurt the kids. Any comments?

comments: A perfect example of the weakness at 103 is at Oak Glen a couple of years ago. Zack Zubay couldn't break into the lineup his first two years because Jason Roberts was in front of him. Roberts was the runner-up his sophomore year but when moved up to 112 he didn't place his junior year and was 4th his senior year. Granted Roberts was wrestling injured and should have wrestled Gandee in the finals but still shows how much stronger 112 is than 103. Zubay was runner-up and champ at 103. 103 is a very weak weight class. But to some people 112 and 119 are weak compared to 135-160. Most people would agree but its all opinion

October 31, 2001
comments: TO:bigj8153, You have to be kidding me! Hedgesville 99-2000 is not even close to the best team to never win a title. Hedgs 99-00 doesnt hold a candle to the 95-96 Fairmont Senior team. This team finished runner up to South by I believe about 10 or 15 points. Their line-up was loaded with: Daniel Bonasso, Nicholas Hedrick, Mike Cinalli, Rassan Bates, Chris Neptune, Andy Wilfong, Ryan Courtney, John Kruzel and Jason Parker. This FS team is far superior to the 99-00 hedgs team. NOT EVEN A CONTEST In fact the 92 through 97 Fairmont Senior teams, even the years they finished 3rd are far superior to Hedgs 99-00. You may also want to look at the years that South finished runner up to Parkersburgh.

I would like to make a few comments about the 103-pound weight class. There has been a lot of talk about whether the class is weak or not. It is my understanding that the weight classes were revised several years ago making the percentage of wrestlers in each weight class more evenly distributed. This is why the middle weight clases have only 5 pounds between the weights classes, where the small and heavy weights have larger differences between the weight classes, allowing a larger number of wrestlers to participate. Also, I sat and watched the states and saw several of what is considered very good wrestlers that when they were younger and in the same weight class as some of these smaller wrestlers were beaten by the now smaller wrestlers. This just shows that no one grows of matures at the same rate, but when equal in size that is the only time you can say who was the better of the two wrestlers. I have seen good wrestlers, that were competitive in a higher weight class. lose weight because they thought they could win a state title, only to end up winning nothing. Yes there are years that any weight class can be weak, but if you are the best for your size (without abusing the system of course) then you are a champion.

comments: To:all readers regaurding the comments from "george"----George brings up an interesting arguement about looking at the northern pan handle before Marion County. As far as individual programs I agree with whoever sent the origanal list of top 5 teams. I think that Fairmont and North both have better overall programs than Wheeling or John Marshall but certainly an arguement can be made either way. Wheeling definatley has the individual champs that speak for themselves. The most interesting element of george's submission is the idea of Northern pan handle, specifically Wheeling and John Marshall vs. Marion County, specifically FS and North. Just off the top of my head I can name from the pan handle:Cliff Ward, Chris Ward, Jason Taylor, Rod Persinger, The Jerromes, Robert Davidson, Rodd Ahller, Jim Copney, Bob Weigand, Mike Faulk, Becker, Muldrew, David Taylor, Vinnie Monseou, Scott Dunaway, Gabe Frangos, Ben Kulpa, David Taylor, Brian Gable, Gabe Frangos. For Marion County, off the top of my head: Rassan Bates, Jay Moore, Doug Moore, Jay Micheal, Adam Naternicola, Aric Naternicola, Mike Joseph, Chris Courtney, Ryan Courtney, Bill Procter, Mike Lewis, Don Courtney, Andy Wilfong, MIKE VIANI, Chris Neptune, Adam Gorbey, Ryan Besidech, Nicholas Hedrick, Daniel Bonasso, Joe Lepara, John Jezero, Jimmy Lamb, Allen Masters, Frank Jezero, Clint Masters, Truimaine Chisolm, John Carper. I could go on for both areas.I realize that I have named mainly Champs and place winners have to be factored in as well.

Can't wait for the season to get rolling! In response to the question about Chris Miles - my 6th grader from last season. He has grown some but is a tweener and could go either of 2 weight classes. The kids above him (Nate Woods 37-4 as a sixth grader - WSAZ placer) and below him (Bryan DeBord - 20+ wins wrestling 85 when weighing 77 last year & also a WSAZ placer) hope he falls right in the middle nicely! and . . . so do I! Does anyone have an idea of how many PSHS and PHS wrestlers play football and may get a late start in practice if their football teams continue post-season?

October 27, 2001
comments: While I appreciate Dr.Welker's great commentary on the new weigh-in procedures, one statement may lead to confusion. He indicates wrestlers may not check their weight at any time prior to the official weigh in. More precisely, wrestlers may not check their weight on any "official" scale prior to weigh in. Most teams have their own digital scales and, unlike the days of the notorious balance beam scale, a wrestler should know what the official scale will indicate before he steps on.

October 24, 2001
comments: The point with 103 is as follows. Almost any wrestler improves with time. Gandee, for example, a great wrestler, he won the states at 103 his 10th grade year. However his best years were his 11th and 12th grade years spent at 112. Think how many other wrestlers fit into that desciption. 103 is just a young class, few seniors are able to wrestler it. Bonasso and Gorayeb were 1st and 2nd aaa, but do you think it's just a coincidence they were the only two seniors in the weight class? Alot of people say "no weight class is easy". Well nothing about the sport of wrestling is easy. While it's true no weight class is easy, some are easier than others. The significant thing about 103 is it allows many wrestlers to experience success they otherwise may not have known. Good luck to all 103's.

About the AAU card, I'm sorry I forgot to add that the IKWF requires you to purchase an USA wrestling card in order for wrestlers and coaches to participate in tournaments. Many mid-western states require the USA cards for their wrestlers and coaches.

comments: Best traditions in state- After Parkersburg schools I think you need to look North before looking at Marion County. John Marshall and Wheeling Park definitely have more team championships than North or West. Also what schools were consolidated to form those two high schools? There seems to have been a lot of talent in the Northern panhandle for qutie some time, Warwood, Weir, Wheeling. Those older and wiser than myself can surely offer forth some info/numbers regarding these schools. However, West and North/Mannington certainly have fine traditions/history as well.

comments: TO:Jim Lemaster. Jim, I can see what you are saying and I agree that there are good wrestlers at 103, however, 103 lacks depth. ......Their is usually a big difference between Freshman and Seniors. Many good wrestlers are poor their Freshman years and then grow and develop into thier top form. Dewitt Stanley looked so big because he was losing a substantial amount of weight to make 103. I have my doubts that he would have beaten Jay Golden, the 112 champ.......

I beg to differ about 103. Some of those mentioned have score high at national competition such as Fargo. In addition, many of them went on to wrestle in college. True, they were bigger by the time they were seniors in some cases but they are still the same people. One domnating senior 103 that comes to mind was DeWitt Stanley who went undefeated his senior year. HE was from Brooke and the "Biggest" 103 I have ever seen. I honestly feel he could have won the state at 112 that year also. I am not a Brooke fan. I just call 'em as I see 'em!

comments: I dont know why people are tring to predict the weight classes without the season even started. Like i know Calhoun they told me they had a kid from Ohio wrestling 103 for them. He can almost beat Morris. We also have some could kids out this year, so please quit predicting the classes before hand. Also Oak Glenn is not going to win the state championship I do believe Cameron will but Williamstown(me) will be close.

I guess that the weight class for the Carrollton T is 8&U. That does make it open for K & up but not very competitive in that age group. It's also the only T around other that Hyde PA which is a ways for me ( I live in Mineral Wells). I gonna take my small guy any way though cause he's "chompin at the bit to start this season".

comments: Look out Kanawha Valley and Region 3. St. Albans is on the way back. They will have several exciting sophs from Hayes and McKinley Jr. Highs. Chad Pauley, Travis Weese, and Britain Bradley to name some. They will add seniors that should have been there the last few years. The word is out that Luke Cooper, Josh Samples, and Jeremy Binion will wrestle this year. Add these fine wrestlers to the solid senior duo of Joe Roberts and Jansen Arnold and the returning juniors Tony Baker, Matt Shinault, Aaron(Dancing Bear)Racer, Amadi Wokpara, and you can see that St. Albans wrestling is well on the way back. The word out also has several athletic seniors wanting to try their hand at wrestling this year. Expect good things from St. Albans this wrestling season. Could they contend for the championship at their own Red Dragon Duals? We shall see!

comments: Watch out for Cameron in AA-A this year. They bring Kelly Hughes in at 103, where I would say he is a favorite even as a freshman. At 112 you have Noah O'Neil who was 5th as a frosh, 119 you have Brandon Antill who qualified last year, 125 Kotson should be a favorite, placed last year, 130 may be Yoders, 135 Casey Hughes or he will be at 140 all I have to say is this kid is going to win it 4 times, he is too good of an athlete. 140 Joel O'Neil who should win it this year, 145 Isaac Stewart who beat the best in the state as a freshman should come up victorious in february, 152 may be Brown or Kupfer, the other will go to 160. I look for Kupfer to repeat whether or not Stickles stays at 160. Brown should be primed to take top honors too as he has placed 3 times in the state tournament. 171 curt meyer is a returning 2 time placer and will score big, 189 and 215 could be the dragons downfall in duals, but should matter little in the state tournament as cameron could win! 5 or 6 individual titles and they will place in other spots. 275- if beresford comes back out, he is a monster of an athlete and should place at states easily. qualified last year. I doub tOak Glen takes top honors this year but you never know with Coach Shaw still up there....

comments: To: mousemom Fact: There are easy weight classes every year in West Virginia. Some are terribly easy such as 215 the past few seasons. 103 is another prime example of a typicaly easy weight class. You may be able to name a decent wrestler or two but that certainly does not make the weight class tough. The fact that you were so liberal in naming good wrestlers at 103 is an example of how week the class has been.

Also for you to infer that kids either already at the high school level or soon to be already have enough knowledge, maturity and guidance to lead themselves as opposed to having a coach is absolutely idiotic. Basic skills they possess but leadership is one of the learning experiences that comes in the total package called high school sports. This year, in AAA, South in all likelihood will dominate, that's not a geuss that's an educated prediction, but this year's individual titles, are more wide open than i've seen in a long time.

Someone has to step up and take over this program. There is too much talent coming up over the next 5 years from the local feeder programs to let this drift into an abyssmal void. I'm sure someone will at the last minute step in to save everything. But will they know wrestling and be good for the program. Warner finished 6th last year and that is not bad for a whoel state compition. My vote is on Warner in whatever weight class he is in. Where ever he is at I believe that this young man could be the next state champ in his weight class. There is a new movie coming out next week all about wrestling and based on a true story. It's an independent production and is being self-released so the only place to see it will be at the Hollywood Theatres in Washington, PA from September 14th through the 18th. The 'actors' are actually wrestling champions. The movie is called Reversal, and you can check it out and even link to their webpage at www.reversalthemovie.com .

comments: to the person on aug 14 who wrote all the wrestlers who should have won but didnt... how can you say that?.. if they SHOULD have won... then they WOULD have.... the wrestler who brings his a game to state and knows how to win and will win when it really matters is the wrestler who SHOULD win and WILL win... there is no way to judge who should win until you see the results.. and the person who wins is the one who should have won

comments: Guess who's been doing a little camping this summer ? The boys from Beckley have, that's who ! Some of the Eagle grapplers have spent time with Craig Turnball and Zeke Jones at WVU and a few of the boys ventured to Huntington to spend a little quality time with Ken Chertow at his Gold Medal Training Camp. Will it equal a team state championship ? Probabley not. But it does prove that the boys are dedicating themselves to improving and bringing the Flying Eagle program back up to a level that is respectable. As for the statement about consolidation in my earlier post, I

comments: Just a couple quick predictions. First, Oak Glen will not dominate their entire dual season as in the past. South will rout them in the 'burg, and Cameron will break their regional stranglehold (as they should have last year). Winning the states will prove even more difficult for both "A" squads, while South may stretch the winning margin to new limits.

comments: Copied the following off PA website. Wrestlers looking for preseason tournaments might be interested in going north. Waynesburg, Washington, and West Allegheny (1/2 to 1 hour from morgantown and wheeling) are not too far for wrestlers in north/central wv. Meadville and Sharon for northern panhandle. IF anyone decides to go let us know. I'm sure we'd be interested in the results. I think some of Hedgesville wrestlers competed in some of these last year, maybe others too.

comments: Just wanted to say good luck to all the ex hedgesville wrestlers who have graduated and are now out either going to college this year or working. I know that Bryan Moats is going to William and Penn in Iowa to wrestle good luck to you this year. Jared Hess going to Potomac State. And Anthoney Regalbuto coming back from injuries looking to make a big impact in college wrestling. Good luck to all three. And good luck to other graduates of Hedgesville if you have gone on to college good luck with the grades if working good luck with that. Hope to see some of you at some tournaments this year. I know a couple will be wrestling in the WVU open I can't wait for that. Anyway good luck with your grades, your wrestling if you are continuing in that, and everything. Attack life like you all did wrestling and you should be fine. Also thanks for the great wrestling you all gave me and the rest of the fans over the years. It seems like just yesterday that Moats, Hess, and Regalbuto were on the mats as 5 and 6 year old bantams and now they are all heading off to college. Man time flies. Anyway thank you to all the ex hedgesville wrestlers and good luck with everything in life and keep in touch.

comments: Feeling pretty bored and started thinking about what might be the best weight class next year. My thought depending on what weights people end up at would be 189. Wouldn't it be nice if Daggett, Courtney, Thomas, Linger, Starsick, and Miller all end up at 189. I know it won't happen though. No Way all of them stay at the same weight. However, will also make 171 nteresting

In addition, the team was able to participate in a lot of fun activities, which included: Statue of Liberty, two shows on Broadway (The Lion King and The Music Man), three water parks, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, hiking three mountains, Pikes Peak, Mt. Rainier, Tijuana (Mexico), running in Central Park, Vancouver (British Columbia), Oceanside Beach, San Diego Wild Animal Park, five shows in Las Vegas, three other plays, Frontier Days Rodeo, Yellowstone National Park, Space Needle, three former NFL all-pro guest speakers: Raymond Berry (Baltimore Colts-Hall of Fame), Don Perkins (Dallas Cowboys) and Randy Gradishar (Denver Broncos) and lots more.
