Fanning Wins on Late Takedown, No. 11 Mt. Cats Take Cardinals
January 20, 2018
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The final few dual match seconds gave the Cardinals a bright spot on a tough night. Heavyweight Terrance Fanning escaped and turned it right into an immediate takedown for the hard-fought 7-6 win. No. 11 Pitt-Johnstown, though, prevailed in the other nine weight classes for the 36-3 wrestling win over Wheeling Jesuit.
In the tight final match, Fanning trailed the Mt. Cats (8-3) D.J. Sims, 6-4, on the bottom. The WJU redshirt junior made it out of Sims hold and took him down right away, before he rode him out the final few ticks.
At 165, Keegan Driscoll suffered a close 2-0 loss and Daniel Romero (149) fell by a 7-3 score. Despite the 11-1 final, freshman Connor Craig held his own against the DII's No. 2 ranked Cody Law.
"The score may not have shown progress, but we turned around the way we wrestled tonight compared to last night's dual with Mercyhurst," pointed out WJU head coach Danny Irwin. "We are exactly one month away from being back here for the regional, and I feel this back-to-back weigh in will prepare us to leave UPJ with smiles on our faces for the way we executed"
The Cardinals now have a week off before they take part in the West Virginia Collegiate Invitational held at West Liberty. First matches start at 9 a.m.
