Three earn crowns at West Virginia Collegiate Open

WHEELING, W.Va. (Jan. 26) - The Wheeling Jesuit University wrestling team took second place at the West Virginia Collegiate Open held at the McDonough Center Saturday afternoon.

West Liberty took home the top team honors for the day with 110.5 points, while Alderson Broaddus took third with 65.0 team points.

A trio of Cardinals won their weight classes, including sophomore Tyler Alberts (Ellwood City, Pa./Ellwood City) at 149, junior 197 Greg Brusco (Delaware, Ohio/Hayes) and junior Brandon Tenney (Buckhannon, W.Va./Buckhannon Upshur) at 141.

Alberts defeated teammate Colt Rutter (Yorktown, Ind./Yorktown) in overtime (6-3) to earn the crown at 149. Tenney also knocked off a fellow teammate in his title match when he picked up a fall at the five-minute mark to defeat Nathaniel Brown (Crownsville, Md./St. Marys) at 141. Meanwhile, Brusco picked up a 13-8 decision in the semifinals, before earned a fall against Josh Dailey of Alderson Broaddus at 1:35 in the finals to collect the individual crown at 197.

"Brusco looked good again and is going to make the 197 pound weight interesting for us down this final stretch," said Head Coach Danny Irwin afterwards.

In addition to Rutter and Brown, 10 other Cardinal wresters earned placement at the event, including:

 On Frankie Bonura:
"Frankie Bonura wrestled great today. He knocked off a 2x WV Champ in the semifinals & almost took out one of West Liberty's top guys. He has made some huge gains this season!"

On Tyler Hogue:
"Tyler Hogue executed some positions we have been working the last two years that resulted in some success."

The Cardinals will return to the mats on Saturday, February 2 when they travel to Berea, Ohio to compete in the John Summa Invitational hosted by Baldwin Wallace University at 9 a.m.

"Next weekend at Baldwin Wallace will help finalize weight classes like 149 & 197 for us," Irwin said. "It is going to be exciting tournament not only for those two weights, but for the entire team to compete all together again!"
