Re: EAST FAIRMONT 40 INDEPENDENCE 33

It's junior varsity. Only a couple starters who have missed matches along the way. There is a second Independence team with extra junior varsity guys that they threw in to fill the pools due to cancellations.

Re: powerade finals

Thank you, Gator. With the exception of one thirty-second stretch, he wrestled a really good tournament. Happy New Year. Hopefully, I will get to see you for a rescheduled South-Indy dual.

Re: powerade finals

Will Jeffers from Huntington finished 8th. He's one of my favorite WV kids to watch wrestle. His matches are always exciting. Lost a close one to Josh Humphreys in the quarters. 138 was a really tough weight.

Re: What do you think?

Someone asked me who I thought would win a dual between the AAA and AA/A state champs. We sat down during a break in a tournament and thought about what it might look like. I used the favorite to win a weight class based on prior performance (like a prior championship or finals appearance) or my gue...

Re: Top 5 wrestlers

PowerAde has a JV tournament and a youth tournament associated with it. I think the youth tournament happens after. Entry into the tournament allows you to fill the 14 weights, although you can fill fewer weights than that. There aren't any JV guys in the varsity tournament.

Re: Top 5 wrestlers

Yeah, forthekids, you are wrong. A lot of the teams that go to PowerAde don't take a full lineup for a variety of reasons, just like Ironman. The entry fee pays for an entire team, whether you bring them all or not. Most teams don't have 14 guys that are ready for that level of competition. Thanks, ...

Re: Top 5 wrestlers

I said I thought the matches would be competitive so I guess that comment was aimed partially at me. I saw where Roberts lost an 8-1 decision to Greg Quinn of Shadyside last weekend. Shadyside comes to Williamstown every year, and Quinn wrestled my nephew there a couple years ago. He was a sophomore...

The calendar didn't cooperate. The OVAC tournament and WSAZ fall on the same weekend this year so South will be in Wheeling.

Re: Top 5 wrestlers

Dan, I'm sure he's talking about South, who has Windland-Irizarry-Roberts-Luke Martin as their first four. Those are four pretty good wrestlers. I think all four of those matches would be competitive. It's a shame that, because of the way the calendar falls, we won't get to see Luke Martin and Brock...

Somebody tell Garrett Wolfe to keep that St. Eds 220 off his elbows and be ready for his fireman's carry/dump. That's his go to move and he's really good at it. It would make my day to see a West Virginia wrestler beat that kid.

Technically, the rule also requires that the school's principal give permission for the wrestler to compete outside of school competition. Ordinarily, that isn't an issue, but not all principals are friendly to the sport of wrestling, so you may want to mention it to the principal at your school.

Oak Glen started their state title run the year after my brother, Jeremy, led Independence to its first state wrestling title in 1996. When their run ended, Jeremy had graduated from college and had an eight-year-old son. They scored over 200 team points at the state tournament for nine straight sea...

Re: Indy vs South

We've still got room on the schedule for it. In terms of our schedule, it would make the most sense around January 4 through 6. We have a pretty long break between PowerAde and Virginia Duals the weekend of January 14. If those dates don't work, we are going to Williamstown for the Bob Zide on Janua...

I would like to take a shot at posting and updating brackets/results from AA/A Region III tournament online. Re: Seeding the State Tournament - Hybrid Pill

To Mason's point, there was an instance a few years ago where the pill number was posted prior to all of the regions having completed their tournaments. I was refereeing the AA/A southern regional (I can't remember if it was 3 or 4 that year) when it happened. Some of the coaches at the tournament k...
