Want to win? Recruit PA wrestlers
Iowa knocked off Penn State tonight with 4 PA wrestlers in the Hawkeye lineup. Tom Brands recruited these kids from across the country. Iowa’s Michael Kemerer (from just north of Pittsburgh) knocked off Penn State’s #1 Hall to seal the deal Pennsylvania wrote the book on high school wrestling and un...

Re: Another year of no WVU All Americans
Is it an “unrealistic expectation” that a Big 12 wrestling program that has outstanding facilities and borders the State of Pennsylvania have at least one or more All Americans EVERY year? Man, I hope not. This only happens when you sign PA high school state champions and not just state qualifiers. ...

Another year of no WVU All Americans
Very disappointing. I have a lot of faith in Coach Flynn, but it appears the program he inherited was much weaker than most of us realized. I mean, Lock Haven had two NCAA D1 All Americans this year... We need to focus recruiting on the WPIAL and the state of Pennsylvania. There are not enough of th...

Wheeling Jesuit wrestling - incredible
Five D2 All Americans, including two national champions. Coach Dan Irvin selected as D2 National Coach of the Year in only his second year. Incredible year for Wheeling Jesuit University. But also last week, Wheeling Jesuit announced that is was in financial distress as an institution. That’s an unu...

Thanks.

Congrats to Madonna’s Cook twins- two state champs
I want to congratulate Weirton Madonna’s Alec Cook, AA/A 145# state champ and his twin brother Garrett Cook, AA/A 220# state champ. Have twin brothers ever won state titles in the same year? This was Alec’s second state title and he finished with an incredible record of 49-2. He is signed to wrestle...

Nick is the father of WV State Trooper Robert Busick (a former WV state champ) and former Ohio placewinner Branko Busick. Nick wrestled professionally in the WWE as “Big Bully.” He was a worl...

Re: Sammie Henson no longer coach at WVU
Hey aacoach61,,, would Jarrod Garnett make sense as an assistant? I got a hint that this is a possibility Garnett was a 2013 AA at 125 for Va Tech and is an assistant coach for North Dakota State University. He has coached In PA at Lehigh and Bucknell. Not sure how many Edinboro assistants Coach Fl...

Re: Sammie Henson no longer coach at WVU
I have followed college wrestling and subscribed to publications like AWN and WIN for 20 years. Here is my read: 1. We can not hire an assistant without previous head coaching experience. The learning curve is too great at the D-1 level. Coach Mazey in baseball was a TCU assistant when hired by WVU...

Tim Flynn new WVU coach-- fantastic hire
At Edinboro, Coach Flynn produced 38 All Americans and 3 different NCAA champions. Even coaching in the middle of nowhere, he led Edinboro to five top ten finishes at the NCAA Division I National Championships, and 13 top 20 finishes.
What a great hire by AD Shane Lyons.

Re: Sammie Henson no longer coach at WVU
The entire process of selecting a head coach at a D-1 school is not done in public so as to protect candidates from upsetting fans at their home school and spare them any embarrassment if they are not hired. The only leak would likely be if someone sees a wrestling coach from another school on campu...

Re: Sammie Henson no longer coach at WVU
No surprise Edinboro has been successful at the college wrestling level. Look who their AD is. 4X Olympic medalist Bruce Baumgartner has been the Edinboro AD since 1998, which means that for 20 years he has not been allowed to coach the wrestlers, and with Title IX as it is the AD cannot show favor...

Not a bad option. Lehigh had 3 All Americans this year, and has had at least 3 AA’s in 6 of the past 8 years. All Americans are the best measure of an NCAA program.

Re: Sammie Henson no longer coach at WVU

Should add here that Jared wrestled his FR and Soph year for Coach Stump at Calhoun where he made the AA/A finals twice and won a 160 # state championship in 2011. Jared then won two AAA championships in 2012 & 2013 at 182 for Coach Chris Way at Parkersburg. It takes a wrestling village to raise...

From WVU wrestling website “Smith also moved on to the 197-pound wrestle-backs after dropping a hard-fought 3-0 decision to No. 2 seed Ben Darmstadt. Following two scoreless periods, Darmstadt chose to start the final frame on bottom. It didn't take long for Darmstadt to score a reversal from there,...
