Re: Independence results

I didn't get the scores submitted until this morning. Cave Springs 36, Indy 27 Cave Springs 61, Riverside 6 Indy 77, Riverside 0 It looked like Pomeroy hurt his knee and be didn't wrestle. Riverside's 285 didn't wrestle either. Holstion wrestled Amos, but didn't wrestle Daniels. Think he got dinged ...

Re: Bearhuggers masked man

That potential finals matchup between Whorton and Martin at 113 was the match I was most looking forward to watching as a wrestling fan at WSAZ. It's a shame we won't get the chance to make that one up. Two really good wrestlers. That storm robbed us of some real drama Saturday night.

Re: Match at Independence High School on Wednesday, January 27

I read somewhere else that it was the same Cody Amos and assumed (incorrectly) that it was true. My apologies. Wednesday evening, Independence will host Cave Springs (VA), Riverside and George Washington. Weigh-ins will be held at 4 pm. Wrestling will begin at 5 pm. Leaving aside some good matchups ...

Match at Independence High School on Wednesday, January 27

Independence is hosting Cave Springs (VA) for a dual meet this Wednesday. Cave Springs is expected to end Christiansburg's run of 14 straight state titles this season and has, among others, PowerAde champ (and former Wheeling Park Patriot) Cody Amos. We would like to make it a quad. We plan to weigh...

Re: WSAZ seeds?

No, it isn't. There is no high school seeding meeting attended by the coaches. There is a seeding committee that seeds the wrestlers at each weight according to the seeding criteria. I think the committee is primarily the coaches responsible for running the tournament (Huntington, Cabell Midland). O...

Re: WSAZ seeds?

Before the forum spins into a tizzy, my understanding of the WSAZ seeding criteria are: 1. Head-to-head 2. Common opponent 3. Returning state champion 4. Returning state placer 5. Returning state qualifier 6. Returning WSAZ champion 7. Returning WSAZ placer 8. Won-loss record/win percentage So when ...

Re: Forfeits

I think the lack of emphasis that we place on dual meets in West Virginia is a big contributor to the number of forfeits you see. If you had a dual meet state tournament, I think you would see a lot more teams work a lot harder to fill all of the weights. Dual meets between full or nearly-full teams...

Re: P I L L

With the pill, you've got a system that is somewhere between a random draw (like UWW uses to contest the World Championships) and a seeded tournament. It's kind of an educated random draw. I like the pill. Not because it is quick or because it is easy. In my eyes, the pill has two primary advantages...

Repo, I am about a year ahead of you in this process (my son is a junior) so I can tell you some of the things that we did between his sophomore and junior years. The first thing I would recommend is hitting one of the post-season national tournaments. We have gone to NHSCA Nationals the last two ye...

Spears (126), Donahue (132) and Johnson (160) all finished third. Didn't get to see Donahue wrestle, but watched Spears and Johnson. They both looked good. Both lost to really tough kids. I was really impressed with Parkersburg's 106 pounder, Braxton Byrd. Really strong. Scrambled well. And stayed o...

I could never find the results on the Herald-Dispatch's web site. Not sure what I was missing. SouthFan, if you want quick results, you really need to go the Twitter route (if you're not already). Most of the bigger teams in the state have an account and tweet results. Huntington's was the first acc...

Preseason AAA Predictions

I stay away from predictions on the AA-A side of things because my son and other kids I coach compete there. With high school practices about to begin, I will throw my predictions out there on the AAA side. These will probably look a lot different in sixty days when everyone has settled in to the we...

For those who think the way the state tournament is bracketed needs to change, check out the result of the Mingo Central-Westside football game tonight. Mingo Central sat their starters and lost on purpose to get on the side of the bracket away from Bridgeport. Seeing the two best kids wrestle on Fr...
