Re: History of girls wrestling in WV
Wasn’t her name Erica Dye? She was a heck of a wrestler. Watched her destroy a darn good kid in the finals at WSAZ one year in middle school.

Re: Participation trophies @ WV AAA Wrestling championships!
An outside view .... I spent over half my life in a wrestling room and interacted with literally hundreds of coaches .... nearly every single one (and all of the good ones) would tell you they don’t give a care about coaching awards or accolades, they just want their wrestlers to do well on and off ...

MsCoach20 .... you were in several of those contentious seeding meetings with me and can attest to the shenanigans that surround seeding .... but you and I were always the voices of reason .... and always right! Plus, we got the big chair! LOL.

Re: The Pill !
Keep the Pill! I too have been in seeding meetings (a lot of them in my almost 30 years coaching) where coaches nearly came to blows because seeding is so subjective. Wrestler A, B,C and D are all highly touted. Wrestler A has a record of 43-4 but all his loses came to nationally ranked kids at Powe...

Re: Forfeits, Evolution, Current State of Wrestling
If I had a nickel for every time I have been asked “What happened to all those great kids you had at Milton...” For a few years there we were pretty much on top of the middle school heap then cars, girls, jobs, video games, academics, coaches from other sports discouraging wrestling, transfers to ot...

Been a while since I coached but they also protect your wrestler from having a team mate first match. If the computer draws them in that spot they move them ... or at least they used to.

Milton wins second Ohio Tournament
Congratulations to my old team, Milton Middle on winning another tournament this weekend in Piqua, Ohio. Always good competition up in Northern Ohio, plus having to adjust to different weight classes. This follows up their win at the Washington Courthouse tournament earlier. The Panthers have also w...

Re: Middle school scores
I have to agree with Brent, Doc and whoever those other coaches were. If I were still coaching, I would have asked that my kids not be included either. I see the whole individual ranking thing as pointless for middle school. Just another way for parents to say stuff like “my kid is ranked #3 this we...

Re: Are we doing the best we can for our sport in WV?
Even simpler - each five matches ( including forfeits and defaults) counts one weigh in. We can wrestle up to five times in one day. Each day of competition (5 matches) counts one weigh in and you can wrestle five times so five matches is the max for a single weigh in . Using this criteria a tri (2 ...

Milton has won their first two tournaments-
Washington Court House Ohio. (No in state teams as far as I know).
Huntington Invitational (included Benny, Barboursville and Point among others)
Group of young coaches doing a great job.

There was the DQ of returning state champ Jason Ward for stalling back about 1998 or 1999. Three stall calls in 22 seconds if memory serves (getting older though - time may be off.).

One of our members visited the national headquarters and museum. I was proud to be inducted the same year as this remarkable guy who has been giving his time to the wrestling community for a half century!

Re: Sammie Henson no longer coach at WVU
Thanks to Coach Henson for his efforts at WVU and throughout West Virginia. That being said, I say we think outside the box and hire Ben Askren. He was interested in the job that was open last week and it did not pan out. Great with kids, his AWA camp and club team system provides ready made recruit...

Jenny, I know the “artist formerly known as Mexicano” quite well, he was a hoot. In fact, his whole family was liable to say just anything at anytime. Case in point, this was back in the day when one almost never saw a tattoo on a wrestler. Well, old Mexicano got one of those tribal bands when they ...

Re: Region 4 AAA seeds
Yep, completely out of whack and should have been fixed after last season - there is no earthly reason why every sport has to have the same teams in each region. Some areas of the state are stronger in swimming, some in softball, etc. I still maintain and have for years just eliminate regions all to...

It was tonight at Huntington Middle School. I am not sure of the scores but the order is correct. I just got the scores from a parent so I made sure to put unofficially. Since there are only four teams in the county now due to consolidation, they can do it all in one night most years. I am sure the ...

Tried it once - after about three days of a beat b who beat c who beat a who got beat by d who did not wrestle any of the others, I gave up. Since so many schools either do not travel or see few other schools and the numbers of matches vary so much, it’s virtually impossible to do accurately. Exampl...

One caveat, back when I was coaching the original assessment could not be over ridden by another physician. You might want to check on that first to make sure before you make a trip to Marshall or Lincoln County. I always used a physician whose son was a college wrestler so he was well aware of all ...
