Re: Forfeits in AAA
You have really taken up this cause to fly the flag for JV wrestlers even though this is not new. Just curious why now? Is it just that you feel we have to start somewhere to make a change? You do realize that while it may seem unfair that good JV wrestlers don't get into regional tournaments, good ...

Re: JV Trivia
I'm not arguing against the possibility of allowing JV wrestlers to qualify for the state tournament, but I am curious how it would change the dynamic within programs. What I mean is: What motivation would a JV wrestler have to become a starter if he gets to qualify and go to the tournament the same...

Re: Forfeits in AAA
Coaches invest a great deal of their lives in making their team the best they can be. They sacrafice. They battle with rules that stifle. They battle administrations and school cultures. Coaches deal with a myriad of issues such as tragedies, drugs, and broken homes. The good coaches give of themsel...

The thread titled Keyser was the one that stuck out to me as being wrong, and that's not anything against Keyser, because they deserve to be complimented. You can read it and then tell us how you meant it. Sure, I realize the value of having 14 starters and a B and C team, but if you don't have it y...

Six qualifiers were due back and 4 placewinners are wrestling now. Last year's heavyweight is no longer enrolled and last year's 195 did not come out this year. Among the 4 state placewinners now on the team, there is also a qualifier from 2 years ago. The cupboard isn't exactly empty as far as qual...

Re: New potentially dangerous call
It's probably a good question to ask an official, or Dr. Welker: How do the various officials boards receive a particular rule and coordinate so that officials across the state are informed and calls can be more consistent from one board to another? Is it more than just the rules test and officials ...

Re: New potentially dangerous call
Well aware we have different boards. We were given the interpretation as WV will apply the rule beyond that which the NFHS requires, so I assume that means all boards should be calling it the same. To say "No", doesn't reference my question. If officials stick with the NFHS rule and basica...

Re: Should Forfeits count?
Nobody wants forfeits. Hopefully your kids aren't getting more than 6-8 per season or I would try to schedule stronger, but to count only contested matches isn't going to make your wrestlers any more or less skilled. Give them credit for the forfeit win. Any that brag about those wins probably aren'...

Re: Should Forfeits count?
With all due respect to those coaches who may believe otherwise, forfeits do count as wins on an individual's record and to not count it as such only penalizes your own kids unnecessarily. The team earned the points by having him make weight and ready to compete. At a seeding meeting, it is very eas...

Re: New potentially dangerous call
This needs to be addressed statewide because officials are calling it differently. Most are letting action continue. In only a few occasions have I seen action stopped with a trapped arm. It has been made well-known by now that West Virginia will be going beyond the NFHS rule and stopping action as ...

Potentially dangerous rule from rear standing position
Doesn't this arm trapped/potentially dangerous rule make a mat return relatively simple and could eliminate some of the quick stall calls that the offensive wrestler receives from this position? Trap one arm, and by rule, the official puts him back down on the mat for you. We'll take that every time...

I feel for teams that are trying to overcome this adversity from the flooding. It's not a good situation, but they are managing to push forward and show resiliency. Regarding PE classes: No participation = fail the class = no credit = re-take it. Don't give them an option. Gym teachers need to advoc...

Re: Time for 3 classes
Some of you are really convinced that combining into one single class is the way to go. Some of you are also shocked that people are suggesting to go ahead and break up the A/AA division into its own parts, despite the fact that the numbers support it now more than ever. I'm not strongly for or agai...

Re: Dutton award 2016
I seriously doubt a 1-0 loss to a Powerade Champ and kid who may win a Dutton himself would exclude anybody. Furthermore, if they stick with a senior, they might look at their whole body of work. If that were to happen, it might not really make a difference what year the senior had a loss that wasn'...

Re: Dutton award 2016
We throw the term lb for lb around often, probably incorrectly. To have that distinction, Noah would have to be as good as wrestlers weighing 500 lbs. Lol. He very well could be the best wrestler in the state and could get it. I don't know who is on the selection committee or why it has always gone ...

Indypats, I'm glad you like Cam, but you obviously think some unavenged in-state losses are okay and others aren't. Simpkins is an excellent choice, by the way. I posted about the mat return stall call recently on a different thread. My experience has been that when a wrestler stands to his feet, the top man gets called for stalling way too quickly. In many cases, 5 seconds would be generous. I think officials are trying to be consistent and that is not wha...

Mr. Moore doesn't need me to defend him, but in no way did he suggest one kid or the other should have won, or that the wrong kid won. If the match had been scored correctly, it wouldn't have ended the match and it may not have changed the outcome, as there was plenty of wrestling to be done after t...

Re: State Tournament Officials
I don't think many people understand how they plan to use the two officials. They will not call the match jointly, making calls equally, etc. The second official will be of no significant importance, in my opinion, except in a case where the lead official would ask for his opinion. If it's like it w...

Re: Simpkins vs Taylor @ 145
Veering off topic a little, but the stalling situation I have a real problem with is how officials are applying it to mat returns of a standing wrestler. I believe officials are trying to be consistent by calling the offensive wrestler too quickly. To explain further, I think this is a situation whe...
