Re: Middle school predictions

Please explain what was said that was duragatory? Why in your mind is WSAZ middle school such a tough and important tournament that it should be the tournament in which wrestlers should be measured? Personally, our choice was to forgo middle school season to instead wrestle PA Top 100 tournaments, l...

Re: Middle school predictions

There are many good wrestlers in Ohio County who have made the choice to not wrestle middle school and focus their efforts on more difficult tournaments and tracking to larger duals tournaments.

Re: Middle school predictions

Hunter Nixon from Wheeling is 135. Will Kuhn should be around there he gets healthy. Isaac VanMeter and Mathew Jenking should be solid upper weight competitors.

Re: Middle school wrestlers in opens

In some parts of the state, most of the better wrestlers have found it more beneficial to their development to just not wrestle for their middle school team. That makes it easy!

Re: Middle school predictions

I forgot about Jenkins. He has always been tough and has battled through some injuries, as well. Chase and Miller being freshman makes me feel really old!!! It will be fun this year to see how all of the freshman we have "grown up" with do at the high school level.

Re: Middle school predictions

I wasn't sure about some of the grades. Most of them I know from wrestling my son over the years or wrestling with him. Kids are growing like crazy right now. Hunter Nixon is about 135 pounds. Billy Gooch is up to about 120. Not sure about the others that you mentioned

Re: Middle school predictions

I guess nobody is in wrestling mode yet! In the northern part of the state Hunter Nixon, Billy Gooch, Cody Taggart, Eric Brothers, Quentin Velas, and Nate Shelek come to mind. Elswhere, Will Kuhn, Querrier Phillips, Bo Moler, Kemo Summers, Derek Raike, Joey Miller, Isaac Van Meter, Colby Piner, Garr...

Re: Only one issue

I think you could just release the seeds for each weight rather than the actual bracket. This should appease the masses! BTW, you all did an amazing job. I it was great for the weekend to have a "state tournament" feel, rather than the feel of a big tournament in a small gym. I can't wait ...

Re: wvywa seeds

I would assume if you so desired, you could petitions the WVYWA board of directors to consider a change to the bracket. I believe the verbiage says that they will "make an effort" rather than a guarantee. However, I can see your point.

Re: wvywa seeds

Only the 6 regional champions were seeded, per WVYWA bylaws. I believe all others were entered into the bracket using the "pill" method, making every effort to have wrestlers from the same region not wrestle each other in the first two rounds. Also, I believe according to the by laws it sa...

Re: wvywa seeds

WVYWA website states criteria will be based on record, head to head, and previous accomplishments. I would assume this would include previous state placement, etc.

Trust me, most of the people who wrestle for an out of state club team wish that they were able to live in and participate in that states state tournament, even if it is tougher.

Re: Regional tournament

If you are worried about whether a wrestler is a 1 seed rather than a 2 seed you may have your priorities messed up. If you have 270 points for the WVYWA that would indicate to me that a particular child has spent nearly all of his time in WV, only seeing WV competition and wrestling the same kids o...

Re: Regional seeding

From what I have seen, regional seeding is almost irrelevant, as 99 percent of the weights classes are round robin or beat 2 out of 3. I am huge believer in the qualifier system and as the organization grows points may become a factor. However, at this time it isn't worth arguing over.

I believe what you are saying may be false. May understanding is that the middle school WVYWA qualifier will be at the same date, place, and time as the other age groups for your region.

I think everyone knows that Hubbard is the real deal and will be in the finals barring a major upset, no matter where he is seeded. The Shadyside 113 is very good and is an accomplished freshman. I believe he will give Martin all he can handle. As we all know, seeding is not an exact science. You st...

I think one division would definitely be the way to go and give the state serious legitimacy. CA only has 1 division in wrestling, and I am sure there are others.

Re: What if the new classifications were applied to last year?

It seems a little out of the box, but I would like to see the weight classes with limited participants put entries from other regions into the state tournament rather than give a forfeit at states. For example, if there are 5 106 pounders in region 1 and 3 in region 4, let the 5th place wrestler in ...

Re: West Virginia Jr. States

The issue with people in our state isn't the money. WV has needed a qualifing process for years, If some of the best wrestling states in the country, like OH and PA have a qualifying process, why is that so bad for our state? If Mr. Dunbar and the wood county powers that be thought so much of the st...

Re: Top Middle School Wrestlers this Season

I cannot speak for other counties, however, in Ohio County the issue is that administration will not let our student-athletes have an overnight at the middle school level. This applies to all sports and activities. That is why we have never been able to attend WSAZ's. We have asked time and time aga...

Re: Top Middle School Wrestlers this Season

I am pretty sure Chase Patterson is in the 8th grade. He has always been 1 year older than my son, who is 12 and in 7th grade. There is a ton of middle school talent throughout our state right now and it will definitely be an interesting year as kids start to mature and grow. Its a shame that travel...
