Ironman Stats WV

This is what I could find for the history of the Ironman for WV wrestlers. Sorry if I missed someone it was not intentional. This could be the year that a West Virginia wrestler from somewhere other than Wood County makes the podium. Hall and Rea are in loaded brackets but are capable of placing.

The nature of the tournament has evolved from a team tournament where full rosters came and competed and because of that format with a little bit of luck you might be fortunate enough to find an easy match or two in the early rounds. It is now very much an individual tournament with several teams bringing less than half of a roster. The easy early round matches no longer exist.

If you've never attended the Ironman, it's difficult to explain the extreme toughness of it.

Not all the top wrestlers are there because of logistics or cash flow for their school. But if you look at the teams attending, you will find many nationally ranked teams, including top seeded Blair Academy and St Eds.

I've witnessed some NCAA champions wrestle there. Some pitted against one another in the semis or finals.

Thanks Tim, I couldn't remember if Metz or Daggett was the first to win Ironman from WV.

I like the concept of allowing the individual to participate without their full team. This has obviously allowed the opportunities for Hall and Rea. As we all know, Rea was the lone state tournament qualifier for Weir High School last season.

Weir High has come a long way in the past 4 years, there were talks about cancelling the program because of lack of numbers and participation. They have in 3 years gone from 4 kids on team to 13 to 17 consistently and becoming more competitive each year. They have brought in coaches who know the sport and have a passion to teach. They have reestablished a middle school program and there is a new wrestling club opening up in downtown weirton, to feed their program. They now have a permanent wrestling room in the school and there future is looking good.
Now with all that being said, Caleb Rea has been the cornerstone of that team for the past 3 season. He has Placed at OVAC for past 3 years, Region 1 champ or runner up for past 3 years and has Placed at states for past 3 years.
He had the resume to get into the Ironman, the coaches sent in a few other varsity wrestler to get into Tournament but they didn't make the cut. He maybe wrestling as an individual this weekend, but he is representing Weir High Wrestling Team.
The JV team along with couple of freshman varsity guys wrestling at Keyser this Saturday.
Sorry for such a long post, thought this needed put out there.

Finals start 6pm
Big shout out to the West Virginia fans who made the trip. Can't tell you how cool the boys think it is that people are taking their time and money to drive up here to cheer for them. It wasn't that long ago that people were vocal about wanting to pull out of tournaments like Ironman. Now we have guys taking vacation time to pack hotels, slap the kids on the back and encourage them win or lose. Met a rowdy group of guys at the gas station as we pulled into town. They were getting refreshments and ready to raise some wv hell. Something special is on the verge of happening and it's not limited to Parkersburg south. Talked to guys from northern panhandle to the southern part of our state who came to watch and cheer. If these kids continue to have success it opens doers for future wv wrestlers to compete at Ironman.

106 Peyton Kellar 0-2
126 Peyton Hall 4-2 7th place
132 Caleb Rea 3-2

126 Brayden Roberts 2-2
132 Luke Martin 3-2
138 Gavin Quiocho 0-2
152 Josh Humphreys 3-2 wrestling 5th/6th
160 Zane Hinzman 1-2
220 Braxton Amos 3-0 wrestling 1st/2nd
285 Louden Haga 2-2

Parkersburg South is currently tied for 13th place

Very good performance. Beat Kim twice, who was ranked ahead of him by intermat. Kim is ranked #11 in the nation, Humphries ranked #14. Marsh (who beat Humphries in consi-semis) was unranked, so he will probably move up as well. I would have like to see him get a shot at Lewan (ranked number 3 in the nation), who placed 3rd.
Tough tournament.
