GW ‘s J.Smith 1 second from Big 12 title

2X WV state champ for George Washington HS, Jake Smith came within 1 second of a Big 12 title at 197 lbs. Jake made it to the conference finals as a 4 seed and lost in sudden victory OT based on one less second of riding time. Jake won his state titles at 145 & 160. He moves on to the NCAA tournament. Last year Jake seriously injured his leg in the Big 12 Tournament and did not compete in the NCAA .

Smith did not get an NCAA seed. In the first match he.takes on No. 2 seed Ben Darmstadt (30-1) of Cornell. Darmstadt, who ranks No. 2 in the country with a 30-1 record. Looks like a good time for an upset.

The NCAA Championships will be held March 15-17, at Quicken Loans Arena, in Cleveland, Ohio. The first round starts at noon ET on Thursday, March 15.
Early sessions will be broadcasted on ESPNU, while second round, semifinal and championship matches will be shown live on ESPN. All six sessions also will be available on ESPN3, with live stats on TrackWrestling.

They are all studs, nobody is undefeated at 197...Smith and Jared Haught (VT-PHS alum) can beat anybody in that bracket any given day. Good Luck gentlemen!!

Following two scoreless periods, Darmstadt chose to start the final frame on bottom.
