In 1999, Morehead High School wrestling coach David Barker and Ncmat.com editor Sara Koenig ran the Morehead Booster Club wrestling tournament in the border town of Eden, North Carolina. In 2000, the tournament became the Super 32 Challenge with the idea of bringing the top North Carolina high school wrestlers to one tournament.

Initially drawing wrestlers from Virginia and North Carolina, the Super 32 has grown into the toughest preseason tournament in the country, if not, one of the toughest high school events in the nation regardless of season and style.

On Episode 113 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we talk with tournament co-directors David Barker and Sara Koenig as they explain the evolution of the tournament, some key points in the event’s history and what to look for when the 2014 event kicks off on November 1 in Greensboro, N.C.

Shaggy, first thanks for the kind words on the OVAC website this summer. I do not mean to take over the Super 32 thread but Braxton had a complete tear of his ACL approximately 4 weeks ago and will have reconstruction at WVU on November 7. The ligament was torn during a training session at the MRTC without contact or twisting of any kind. It was likely partially torn 4 years ago and broke completely when it stretched that last little bit. Estimated time to return is 6 months to 1 year. He's learning to accept that life isn't necessarily fair and it's completely irrelevant to dwell on what he does for the sport that he loves versus what others do. He's disappointed that he can't help his team win the State and chase the scoring record. He's also disappointed that many of the questions that have been asked leading into this high school season will now forever go unanswered. We're praying that surgery and rehab will go well. The Team WV petition process is not something that he can count on so we are hoping that he will be cleared in time to participate in the WV Freestyle Tournament and earn the opportunity to compete at Fargo July 2017.
Super 32 was not a fun weekend at my house. This high school season will be tough for him to watch. Weather, health, and finances permitting, I hope to distract him by spending some time taking unofficial visits.
Before you feel too sorry for Braxton, remember a kid in Pennsylvania named Ian Malesiewski. He was the favorite to win Braxton's weight at Fargo. He fell the wrong way in a match this spring, fought for his life, and is now fighting to walk again someday. Remember Jake Hendricks from Wyoming Seminary who just lost his mother Jen to a brain aneurysm. Yes, a torn ACL sucks but if you're going to say a prayer, give that prayer to the Malesiewski and Hendricks families.

Braxton is a fine young man and I hate this for him. I wish him a speedy recovery. Can't wait to see you back on the mat. Prayers go out to all three families!

Braxton is the front runner for the Dutton Award, Class of 2020, despite being out all season.

Nothing against WVU, but Dr. Bradley in Pittsburgh is recognized as one of the best surgeons in the country for athletes. He does knees and shoulders for most of Pittsburgh's professional athletes and other professionals come to Pittsburgh to have procedures done by him including Tom Brady. Fairly certain he did Spencer Lee's shoulder last year. Might be worth looking into.
