WVU hosts Wyoming tonight for the final dual of the season. This is the final tune up for the Big 12 Championships. Wrestlestat doesn't know what we know about this being the best WVU team in a very long time.

Although WVU was the underdog coming into this match it was a very winnable dual. They had to have all three of the toss up matches at 133, 141 & 149 but lost all three on scores of 4-2, 3-2 & 3-1. They didn't wrestle terribly but did not show much to get excited about.

Someone has gotten a lot of mileage out of me saying, "that this is WVU's best team that they have had in a long time." There is no part of that statement that says or even infers they are a good team. This is not a good team and has not been a good team for many years so the bar isn't set too high for saying, "this is WVU's best team they have had in long time" so lets not pretend that WVU is supposed to be a national powerhouse.

Let's get back to the original statement in question about this being the best team they have had in a long time. If anyone can point to a season in the last ten years where they have had this many HS All Americans, multiple time state champions, and Top 100 recruits in the lineup then I am more than willing to hear them out.

WVU has not gotten the results that anyone wanted to see out of their starting lineup this year. I don't know that it would have made a difference or not but everyone needs to keep in mind that their best 133 pounder took a red shirt this year and has had pretty good success at the open tournaments. They also had two guys injured early in the season that has kept them out of the lineup, Davin Rhoads at 141 and Caleb Dowling at 157, both of these guys would have been improvements. And finally Dennis Robin at 174 has had some good wins this season, unfortunately he has been out with injuries and hasn't been in the starting lineup too much.

Going 1 - 6 in the BIG 12 is certainly not the results that anyone wants but look back since they have entered the BIG 12 and see how many wins they have had each season. They average about 1 win per season in the BIG 12 so this year is right on par.

Redshirts and injuries are something that all D1 teams have to deal with. Who makes the final decision on if a wrestler is redshirted or not? The coach? If the redshirt decision is made, then that wrestler needs to be forgotten until his redshirt is taken away. He is redshirted. He is gone and not part of this season's results.

As for injuries, how does WVU's injury rate stack up against other teams? Perhaps what WVU does in preparation is not the best practice?

So my projected Dual record is 11 wins with 7 losses. As far as the conference and national tournaments I would like to see at least 5-6, if not more, with a top 6 finish at the BIG 12's and I would like to see 3 guys make it to the Round of 12 with at least 2 All-Americans. If the team can achieve that then I think that is an improvement over last year. Throughout the year I would like to see more guys ranked in the Top 20, I do believe this year they have the potential to have as many as 7 guys ranked in the Top 20. If that happens then that will definitely be better than last year.

So the lineup is exponentially better, but the team results are thus far the same or worse? I share your enthusiasm for this team. I hope we have great Big 12 & National Tournaments. I hope your expectations are met. If not, I wonder if you talk accountability or more excuses?

Tell me what I have said that is not true. I will tell you what I did not say, I never said that the lineup was "exponentially better". You are really bad at this reading thing, do not turn your poor reading comprehension skills into me making excuses for some of the things that I have said. I also like how you cherry pick through my quotes to make yourself better, did you find the one where I said that injuries happen and guys take red shirts and that team lineups change. I made that projection before anyone knew what the lineup was going to be and my projection was based on what I thought the strongest lineup would be. I don't feel that they put their best lineup on the mat this year. Dowling got hurt and been out all year because of it and Jordan Titus took a redshirt. Both guys would've helped this lineup out and if Davin Rhoads was in the lineup at 141 I can't say he would've helped but I can say that he wouldn't have hurt anything. There certainly has been a few weight classes that has been very disappointing to watch.

Speaking of projections lets take a look at yours:

Dual Record? I guessed 14-4
How many individual Big 12 Champs? 2
How many NCAA Qualifiers? 7
How many NCAA All Americans? 4
How many NCAA Champs? 1

Lets hear your excuses or were you just being a D-bag when you made them because everyone knows that this was not possible for this team to do.

The fact is that we see this team in two different ways. I believe that the team is being set up for long term success which takes a while to build and you want to see immediate results which often results in a lot of up and down years. I am excited for the BIG 12 tournament as well as all of the other conference tournaments and I always look forward the NCAA championships. I am hoping WVU can get 4 guys through to the NCAA championships.

I am sticking with the notion that WVU doesn't have enough to offer the top national recruits. The school needs a big name coach to attract big name recruits.

WVU already tried that and although he did manage to bring in "the big name recruits" he could not hold on to them.

WVU was pathetic when looking for coaches. I know Cary Kolat who built Campbell into a better team than WVU wanted the job. He grew up just over the Pa/WV state line. Never even got an interview either time. John Hughes, Lehigh coach no interview! Do you know how hard it is to recruit kids for that kind of a program. Does WVU have anyone that has a clue about hiring wrestling personnel?
