World Cup in Iran

Postby timamos » Thu Feb 16, 2017 7:34 am

US wins 7 of 8 over Georgia. Next round 9:15 am our time vs Russia
Regardless of the politics the Iranian people love Wrestling. They love their wrestlers, they love great wrestlers from everywhere, they appreciate a great move or scramble/series. It's fun to watch and listen to events when they're in full force.

Good stuff. 5 US wrestlers go unbeaten on day 1 and team looking strong.

Kicked Russia's butt 6-2 Taylor's domination of his opponent was inspiring. Maybe more cardio and less injectables next time?

Tight win over Azerbaijan last night 4-4 with USA having more bonus points.

Gold medal match this morning (Friday) 8:30 eastern vs Iran.

I wish we had high school and college student sections for wrestling with half of the enthusiasm shown by the Iranian crowd.

While the finals didn't work out the way we wanted there were some excellent moments. Not the least of which was Taylor pinning Yaz. Before the last flurry he was in danger of being DQed for passivity. then to pin the Olympic champ... amazing. But I have to agree with Tim. Even with the silver it would be amazing to wrestle in an environment like that. Right now there are probably 3 maybe 4 on the HS level that someday have a real shot and experiencing something like that. Here is the hoping the dream comes true for them!!

Tim
Wrestling is Iran most popular sport!!
When I was over there back in the early 90's, I got stuck by an former Gold medalist in 40 seconds.

The Iranian crowd gave me gifts just for going against one of their own!

I loved the people and they showed respect for anyone that wrestles

Here in CA... we got 3 coaches from Iran.. Cuba and Armenia and we train together.. we have a great time together teaching young future Olympians the sport!

Just wished politics do not play a part of any of these great athletes
