West Virginia Wrestling -- Scores

Parkersburg South 36 North Marion 27

Match held January 28, 1998 at Parkersburg South

Facing the possibility of their first loss to a West Virginia team in over four years, top-ranked Parkersburg South found themselves in a predicament with a slim 30-27 lead over number 5 North Marion going into the heavyweight match. But just as he did in the first match of the season against Cabell Midland, first-year wrestler Erik Spriggs became the hero with a second period pin over Jim Gaines.

Other highlights of the evening were Ryan Besedich's overtime win over Josh Dearth and Jason Conaway's 12-second pin over Tim Wheeler. Dearth came from behind to lead Besedich 5-4 in the final minute of the third period but then gave up a penalty point, opening the door for Besedich to get the go-ahead takedown in overtime. Wheeler, who has had some success in his senior year wrestling South's rugged schedule, found himself outmatched by Conaway's brute strength, giving up the quickest pin of the evening.
