- Directions to school: Interstate 79 to exit 119. Rt 50 W through
Clarksburg. Take first left after Town House West Motel at light. Turn
left off Rt 50 up the hill. Liberty is the first left over the hill.
In 2007-08, Liberty looks to continue its historical run in the state
tournament; while one wrestler is eyeing history of his own. The
Mountaineers will look to make it 4 straight trips to Huntington with
at least one state place winner when they take the mat this season.
Since 2005, the Mountaineers have garnered 7 state medalists, almost
40% of the 35 year-old school's total.
Leading the charge will be Senior Cruz McIntyre. McIntyre will attempt
to become the first wrestler in school history to place three times at
the state tournament. His two medals already have him in elite company
in the Liberty record books, equaling only Jeff Cox, Mike Fortier, and
Mike Grilli.
Joining McIntyre in his quest will be a trio of returning state
qualifiers. Seniors Eric Woetko, Damon Kindle, as well as Sophomore
Corey Kindle will look for a place on the podium this year. In
addition Senior Tony Washington, hard working Junior Brett Floyd, and
Junior Zack Jeter will provide scoring potential at the Big Sandy
Superstore arena.
Other changes have also occurred over the summer that will drastically
change the way Liberty High School wrestles in the future. Veteran
Coach Steve Harlow will lead Mountaineer Middle to the wrestling mats;
adding a Middle School feeder program to the school for the first time.
In addition, Head Coach Calvin Anderson will continue to feed valuable
leadership and experience into Liberty's junior wrestling club feeder,
the Clarksburg Panthers, whose alumni represent 11 of Liberty's state
medals.
