Yellow Jackets -- Wrestling


Williamstown High School has a long history of success on the mats. Williamstown is a consistent top five finisher in the state tournament. The Yellow Jackets have won state titles twice (1982, 1983) and have been state runners up 7 times. In addition, Williamstown has claimed eight conference championships in the wrestling tough Little Kanawha Conference. There have been 42 individual state champions from Williamstown.

Coaching Staff
Williamstown is coached by first year head coach Dennie Uhl. Uhl was the assistant to former head coach Jeff Givens for 5 years; Givens is now the new Athletic Director at WHS. Uhl is a 1996 graduate of Williamstown High School where he won the state championship in 1996 at 160 lbs. under Hall of Fame Coach Bob Pickens. He was also a two time Region 1 champion and a three time LKC champion and the 1996 Most Outstanding Wrestler in the LKC. He is a West Virginia University graduate and obtained his Masters at Marshall University. Uhl has wrestled in all levels of wrestling in Williamstown. He is a Special Education teacher at WHS. The assistant coaches are made up of a trio of former WHS wrestlers - Josh Flesher, Bobbie Kelley, and Ryan Scott. Flesher is in his second year on staff and was a 1996 graduate of WHS and a state runner up at 160 lbs. in 1995 and was 4th at 171 lbs in 1996. Kelley is also in his second year on staff and is a 1985 graduate of WHS where he finished 4th in the state at 112 lbs. He wrestled at the college level at Muskingum College he also ran the Williamstown Youth League wrestling for 14 years. Scott who was the head coach of the WHS Junior High team for 2 years has joined the staff the varsity staff this year. He is a 1994 graduate of WHS where he placed 4th in the state at 119 lbs.

2007 - 2008 Outlook
Williamstown will be fielding a younger team this year having to replace a group of very successful seniors and former state champion and 4X LKC champion Ryan Flowers. The Jackets return three state place winners in senior Mackenzie Peters (4th at 125), junior Tony Jones (5th at 119 - 2006), and sophomore Tyler George (5th at 119). Also returning this year are four other state qualifiers in juniors Cody Pennybacker, Josh Radabaugh, Robbi Wigal, and sophomore Mark Board. WHS will welcome some new faces to the line up this year two of which should have an immediate impact - freshman Cody Kelley and senior Ohio-transfer Cory Hart. Other wrestlers expected to see lots of action for the Jackets include junior Ryan Zide, sophomores Andrew Jones, Sean Martin, and Joe Palm. Freshmen Matt Hendrickson and Tom Collins could work there way into the line up at some point in the season.

Williamstown High School wrestling is fed by its Junior High Program. Williamstown Jr. High School is headed up by Tim Haddox, a former Williamstown state champion in 2000 at 119.

Williamstown's Pee Wee team is a member of the Wood County Youth Wrestling Program, considered by many to be one of foremost youth wrestling organizations in West Virginia. The Youth program is headed by second year coach Mike Smith, also a former Williamstown wrestler and state place winner.
