WEST VIRGINIA MAT THOUGHTS

by Dr. Bill Welker

... on The Promotion of Wrestling in the Mountain State

Wrestling continues to grow in popularity all over the United States and West Virginia is no exception. Small-fry wrestling programs are springing up all over the state. And perennial scholastic wrestling powers in the Mountain State are now being challenged for dominance in the sport from many varied sections throughout West Virginia.

Because of this widespread growth, more and more fans are attending wrestling tournaments and matches at all levels. As can be expected, many of these newly-found spectators, as well as old-timers are a bit confused with individual scoring, team scoring, terminology and numerous other aspects of the sport. This is due to the everchanging nature of the sport.

Hence, the gist of "West Virginia Mat Thoughts" is to aid wrestling enthusiasts in acquiring a better understanding of this unique sport and, at the same time, to give the readers an opportunity to ask questions about various wrestling matters.

So, I hope you enjoy the many columns I have written over the years--may they be informative as well as enjoyable to each and everyone of you. Some will make you think, while others will stir your emotions. Whatever the case may be, I hope you will become more aware of the unique abilities and dedication that all our wrestlers possess. So sit back, read, ponder, and enjoy the grand sport of wrestling.
