WAYNESBURG, Pa. (January 13, 2009) – West Liberty’s No. 16-ranked wrestling team dominated a triangular match at Waynesburg University on Tuesday.
Coach Brian Davis’s Hilltoppers got things rolling with a 25-13 win against Seton Hill and followed that up with a 28-13 victory against the host Yellow Jackets.
Mitch Smith and Mike Carpenter led the way for West Liberty as each posted a fall and a major decision.
Smith, who transferred to WLSC this year from Hofstra University, pinned Seton Hill’s Buck Watkins at 5:36 of their 157-pound match and followed that up with a 13-5 major decision against Waynesburg’s Chris Pihou.
Carpenter, a fast-rising freshman less than a year removed from a West Virginia state high school championship, finished off both West Liberty victories with a flourish. The athletic 285-pounder breezed to a 16-3 major decision against Seton Hill’s Stephen Zubach in his first match and scored a first-period fall against Waynesburg’s Rich Janicki.
Freshman 165-pounder Jarrod Shaw and sophomore 174-pounder Seth Phalen were the Hilltoppers’ other double-winners on Tuesday.
West Liberty hits the road on Saturday for a noon dual match at Kutztown (Pa.) University.
