WEST LIBERTY WRESTLERS FINISH STRONG AT SUPER REGION ONE DUALS

NEWBERRY, S.C. – West Liberty University’s No. 12-ranked wrestling team won back-to-back matches on Saturday afternoon to finish off a winning weekend at the NCAA Division II Super Region One Duals hosted by Newberry College.
Coach Brian Davis’s Hilltoppers dropped a 25-9 decision to No. 2-ranked Newberry on Saturday morning but rebounded with blowout wins against Anderson, 35-6, and Belmont Abbey, 40-9, to post a 3-2 record for the two-day event.
Wrestling short-handed without All-American Mitch Smith – ranked No. 2 nationally at 149 pounds – West Liberty stumbled out of the gates on Friday with a 21-12 upset loss to UNC-Pembroke in the opening match.
The Hilltoppers got back on track later that day by pitching a 43-0 shutout against St. Andrew’s Presbyterian. It was the 400th dual-meet victory in the history of the West Liberty mat program.
Four WLU wrestlers went 4-1 over the weekend.
Nick Wykoff impressed with a pin, a major decision and two decisions at 133 pounds.
Matt Cunningham was strong at 141 with a pair of first-period falls, a win by default and a decision.
Brandon Neifeld posted a pin and three decisions at 184 pounds.
Mitch Knapp, ranked No. 7 nationally at 197 pounds, shook off an upset loss in his opening match to close with two first-period falls, a decision and a win by forfeit.
J.D. Ramsey went 3-0 at 285 with two decisions and a win by default while Derrick Williams was 3-1 at 165 with three wins by decision.
A.J. Gavin stepped in at 149 and went 3-2 with two wins by major decision and one by technical fall. Matt Littleton also posted a 3-2 mark at 174 with a pin and major decision among his triumphs.
The Hilltoppers return home to host back-to-back matches on Friday and Saturday.
No. 15 Findlay comes to the ASRC on Friday night with Waynesburg coming in on Saturday. Both matches are set for 7 p.m. starts.
