NO. 12 HILLTOPPERS FALL SHORT AT NO. 1 NOTRE DAME

February 14, 2010

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The No. 12-ranked West Liberty University wrestling team ran into a buzzsaw here Saturday afternoon when they challenged the NAIA’s No. 1-ranked team, Notre Dame (Ohio) College, on the Falcons’ home mat at Murphy Gymnasium

Notre Dame picked up two first-period falls and three major decisions in handing the Hilltoppers a 33-8 setback.

It was the Falcons’ third victory of the season against a nationally-ranked NCAA Division II opponent and their ninth straight win overall as they improved their dual-meet mark to 10-1. The only loss on their slate came at the hands of NCAA Division I power Ohio State.

Nick Wykoff gave West Liberty its only victory on the mat Sunday when he snapped Brian Dean’s 7-match winning streak with a 9-6 decision at 133 pounds.

The Hilltoppers also received a forfeit at 197 pounds.

Coach Brian Davis’s West Liberty squad will try to bounce back quickly when they host Gannon Monday night in the final home match of the season. Action gets under way at 7 p.m. in the ASRC.
