Hilltopper Wrestlers Fall at No. 16 Gannon

2/13/2011

ERIE, Pa. – Nationally-ranked Gannon won six of nine individual matches Saturday to take a 28-12 decision against the West Liberty University wrestling team in an afternoon dual meet on the Golden Knights’ mat.

The No. 16-ranked hosts used a forfeit, a fall and two decisions in the first four matches to grab a quick 18-0 lead and never looked back in rolling to the victory.

The Hilltoppers didn’t walk away empty-handed.

Seth Phalen snapped the Knights’ early spurt with a 5-0 shutout victory at 157 pounds.

West Liberty finished with a flourish, as well, with All-American Mitch Knapp scoring a 10-2 major decision at 197 pounds and 285-pound standout J.D. Ramsey pinning Marino Quersio at 6:08.

The Hilltoppers wrap up the regular season at home Tuesday night when they host Ashland in a 7 p.m. dual meet at the ASRC.
