Short-Handed Hilltoppers Third at Mount Union

ALLIANCE, Ohio – A short-handed West Liberty University wrestling team got its season off to a solid start on Saturday with a third-place finish at the Mount Union Invitational.

Mike Carpenter won the 285-pound championship and three other Hilltoppers were runnersup in their respective weight classes, putting a smile on the face of head coach Brian Davis.

“I thought our guys competed hard," Davis said. "With four starters out and having to wrestle a few guys up a weight class, we didn't go up there expecting to challenge for the team title. Even so, I was pretty impressed by some of the things I saw.”

Carpenter was especially sharp in winning the heavyweight division. The senior veteran capped his run to the title with a first-period pin of Lake Erie's Almonte Patrick.

Also advancing to the championship matches in their respective weight classes for West Liberty were 141-pounder Dan Carpenter, a redshirt freshman who was competing unattached, along with 149-pound senior Nick Wykoff and 184-pound senior Derrick Williams.

The Hilltoppers will hit the ASRC mats for the first time on Friday night when they host nationally-ranked Pitt-Johnstown. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start. Mount Union Invitational
