Multiple Wins for Hilltoppers in Midwest Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The West Liberty University wrestling team gave a good account of itself here Saturday at the prestigious Midwest Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis.

Several members of Coach Mitch Smith's youthful squad picked up victories on the mat but none were able to advance to Sunday's placing rounds in the mammoth 31-team field, which featured no less than 10 squads from the latest NCAA Division II Top 20 poll along with several nationally-ranked NAIA programs.

A trio of Hilltoppers advanced to the third round of consolation matches on Saturday while three others were able to add a victory to their season total.

West Liberty 125-pounder Zach Brown received a first-round bye before dropping a hard-fought 5-0 decision to an unbeaten wrestler in the second round. Dropping down to the consolation bracket, Brown got a bye through his second-round consolation match before being eliminated by Ashland's Sebastian Vidka, 9-4, in the third round of consolations.

Dominic Vagnier, WLU's 133-pounder, lost his opening match but rebounded with a 12-8 decision against Dylan Carlile of Emmanuel in his first-round consolation match. Vagnier stayed alive with a 7-4 nod against St. Catherine's Gage Branson in the second round consolations only to see his tournament come to an end due to injury default in the third period of his third-round consolation match against Ashland's Chandler Minnard.

Anthony Craig opened with a 16-4 major decision against Lindsey Wilson's Logan Hatfield in a first-round match at 141 but a tough draw kept him from advancing any farther.

At 149, Cole Nace rebounded from a first-round loss by sprinting off to a 24-6 technical fall against Shorter's Deonte Mitchell in his first wrestle-back. Nace fell to Lake Erie's Nick Boggs in a second round consolation.

Eric VandenBossche was knocked into the consolation bracket by a first-period fall in his opening match at 184 but came back strong with a first-period fall of his own against Chase Wrisinger of Truman State in a first round consolation. VandenBossche dropped a tough 6-4 decision to host Indianapolis' Taylor DeLong in their second round consolation tilt.

Hilltopper 197-pounder Nathan Dawson also lost his first round match but gutted out a 3-2 win against Temaris Dixon of Coker in the first tiebreaker to advance out of the first round consolation. Dawson followed that up with a forfeit win against Lindsey Wilson's Jake Maupin in the second round consolation before falling by a 6-2 count to McKendree's Luke Diener in their third round consolation match.

Wisconsin-Parkside has 76.5 points to carry a slim lead into Sunday's action. Maryville (Mo.) is second at 69.5 with Pitt-Johnstown and Upper Iowa tied for third place at 64. Lake Erie rounds out the top five with 62 team points.
