Hilltopper Wrestlers Take Opener

January 20, 2012

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The No. 14-ranked West Liberty University wrestling team got off to a good start in Friday night's opening round of the Super Region One Duals, finishing strong in a 27-15 victory against American International at Pitt-Johnstown's Sports Center.

Three Hilltopper wrestlers closed up shop early with pins to spur the runaway victory.

Dillon Nolte notched a first-period fall at 133 pounds while Derrick Williams (184) and JD Ramsey (285) each stopped their opponents in the second round.

American International put up a good fight in the early going and actually carried a 15-9 lead into the final four matches despite Nolte's fall and a decision by nationally-ranked Nick Wykoff at 141 pounds but AIC never entered the winner's circle again.

Matt Littleton started the Hilltopper comeback with a major decision at 174 pounds and Williams put WLU ahead to stay with his fall at 184.

Jake Donley kept things going by pitching a 1-0 shutout at 197 and Ramsey, the Hilltoppers' nationally-ranked heavyweight, finished with a flourish by posting West Liberty's third pin of the match.

The Hilltoppers close out the Super Region One Duals with a pair of matches on Saturday. The Black and Gold take on East Stroudsburg in an 11 a.m. match before wrapping things up against UNC-Pembroke at 1 p.m.
