Hilltoppers' Carpenter Wins Regional Title

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – West Liberty University senior Mike Carpenter won the 285-pound title in the final match of the NCAA Division II Super Region One wrestling championships Saturday afternoon at Kutztown University.
The Hilltopper standout was one of three West Liberty wrestlers to earn a spot in next month's NCAA Division II national wrestling tournament.
Carpenter, now 30-3 on the season, was one of the 285-pound favorites coming into the weekend tournament and certainly lived up to that billing, capping a strong tournament run with a second-round pin of host Kutztown's Ziad Haddad in the championship match.
West Liberty came within a takedown of coming home with a pair of individual titles as sophomore Art Hobley made it all the way to the finals at 157 pounds only to fall just short with a 3-2 setback against UNC-Pembroke's Justin Pencook in their title tilt.
The Hilltoppers' third NCAA qualifier, senior Derrick Williams, battled his way through the wrestleback rounds to finish fourth at 184 pounds. Williams settled for fourth place after being edged in a tiebreaker by Gannon's Zach Zeics in Saturday's Third-Place match.
Two other wrestlers placed in the regional tournament but fell short of qualifying for nationals. Senior Nick Wycoff was sixth at 141 pounds while sophomore Danny Doyle was sixth at 197.
Newberry successfully defended its regional team championship with 147 points. Pitt-Johnstown was second at 119 with Mercyhurst finishing third with 85 points.
