Emery A Win Short

3/14/2014

CLEVELAND, Ohio – West Liberty University 165-pounder Mike Emery came up one win shy of All-America status as opening day action concluded Friday night in the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships at the Cleveland Public Auditorium.

Emery (18-9), the Super Region One runner-up at 165 pounds, got off to a good start on Friday morning when he gutted out a 1-0 decision against Findlay's Bradely Metz (30-15) to earn a spot in Fridaynight's championship quarterfinals.

The Hilltopper junior had a tough draw in the quarterfinals as Central Oklahoma's Chris Watson (42-3) dropped Emery into the consolation bracket with a 15-0 technical fall.

Emery locked horns with returning All-American Gabe Fogarty (12-8) of St. Cloud State, Minn. with a berth in Saturday's top eight on the line but couldn't get anything going as Fogarty clinched his second straight All-America honor with a first-period fall.

Super Region One champion Notre Dame (Ohio), ranked No. 1 in the final NWCA coaches' poll, leads the team scoring after Friday's action with 44.5 points. Two-time defending national champion Nebraska-Kearney is a close second with 41 points, followed by Lindenwood, Mo. (36) and St. Cloud State (35.5) with Maryville, Mo. and Ouachita Baptist, Ark. tied for fifth with 33 points.
