WLU Wrestlers Win on Senior Night

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University wrestling team celebrated Senior Night by coming from behind for a 21-15 victory against Ohio Valley before an enthusiastic crowd at the ASRC.
Head coach Mitch Smith honored his four seniors – Zach Brown, DeMadre Turner, Nate Dawson and Garrett Vulcano – in a brief ceremony prior to the match and all four veterans played key roles in the Hilltopper win.
Brown got things going by gutting out a 3-2 win against Anthony Tripke in their 125-pound lid-lifter.
Bryce Humphreys gave West Liberty an early 8-0 lead with a dominating performance at 133, rolling to a 17-0 technical fall against Colton Nangle.
The Fighting Scots took their first lead of the night, 9-8, by reeling off three straight decisions but Turner was able to stop the bleeding in his 165-pound match.
Trailing 7-5 with time running out, the senior from Huntington came up with a late takedown and added a riding time point for what proved to be a crucial 8-7 decision.
Ohio Valley retook the lead, 15-11, with a first-period fall by Dalton George at 174 but it was all WLU the rest of the way.
Dawson delivered a clutch performance with an 8-4 decision against Austin Antill at 184 and Vulcano put West Liberty ahead to stay with a commanding 10-0 major decision against Tyler Koreski in their 197-pound bout.
Chris Cook wrapped up the Hilltopper victory with a 5-0 shutout of Ben Willard at 285.
It was a storybook ending for WLU's four seniors as they accounted for four of WLU's six wins and 13 of West Liberty's 21 points in their final appearance before the home crowd.
The Hilltoppers hit the road on Saturday for a triangular with LIU-Post and Shippensburg on the Shippensburg mat. West Liberty will square off against LIU-Post at noon with a 2 p.m. test against the host Red Raiders to follow.
