No. 16 Hilltoppers Fall at No. 2 Notre Dame

January 19, 2018

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – A battle of nationally-ranked wrestling squads went to the hosts here Friday night as No. 2 Notre Dame (Ohio) handed No. 16 West Liberty a 36-7 setback in a test of Super Region One contenders at Murphy Gym.

The host Falcons (6-1) have nationally-ranked wrestlers in nine of the 10 weight classes and were coming off an impressive win against No. 3 Ashland earlier this week but there were a couple of bright spots for Coach Mitch Smith's Hilltoppers (4-4).

West Liberty's Darius Bunch, ranked No. 1 nationally at 133 pounds, was in control of his match against David Bavery throughout and coasted to an 8-1 decision.

The Hilltoppers' Logan Kemp, who moved into the national rankings this week as the No. 12-rated 197-pounder, battled through a bloody nose that halted his match against Notre Dame's Logan Hall on several occasions but still rolled to a 12-3 major decision.

West Liberty freshman Corey Secrist, ranked No. 12 nationally at 125 pounds, faced his toughest opponent of the season in defending national champion Ivan McClay. Secrist kept things interesting through three periods but McClay's experience paid off in the end with a 13-5 major decision.

The Hilltoppers will be back in action on Wednesday when they take on Mercyhurst (Pa.) in a 7 p.m. bout at Wheeling Park High School.
