No. 16 WLU Wrestlers Drop Dual to Lakers
January 24, 2018
WHEELING, W.Va. – The No. 16-ranked West Liberty University wrestling team dropped a 30-6 decision to unbeaten Mercyhurst Wednesday on Ohio Valley Night at Wheeling Park High School.
The visiting Lakers (9-0) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with a decision at 125 pounds but Coach Mitch Smith's Hilltoppers (4-5) wasted little time evening the score.
West Liberty's Darius Bunch, the nation's No. 1-ranked 133-pounder, didn't give up a point in pitching a 2-0 shutout in his match against Aidan Bunch to forge a 3-3 deadlock on the scoreboard.
Unfortunately for the hosts, Mercyhurst was able to reel off wins in the next six bouts to put the match out of reach.
Logan Kemp, ranked No. 12 nationally at 197 pounds, stopped the bleeding with a convincing 9-2 victory against Wes Phipps in the penultimate bout of the evening but Mercyhurst prevailed at 285 to close out the match.
The Hilltoppers return to the ASRC on Saturday to host the West Virginia Invitational.
