Short-Handed Hilltoppers Fall at Seton Hill
GREENSBURG, Pa. – A short-handed West Liberty University wrestling team notched some quality wins here Sunday but it wasn't enough to keep the No. 16-ranked Hilltoppers from dropping a 29-12 decision to Seton Hill in dual meet action at the McKenna Center.
Coach Mitch Smith's Black and Gold (5-6) was in the hole from the start as West Liberty had to surrender forfeits at 125 pounds and 174 due to injury.
The Hilltoppers made their presence felt quickly as Darius Bunch, the nation's No. 1-ranked 133-pounder, breezed to an 8-3 decision against Rodney Bunch in the first match of the day.
The host Griffins (13-3) still held a 6-3 lead, thanks to the forfeit at 125, and they quickly doubled their point total with a fall in the waning seconds of the 141-pound match.
West Liberty's Tanner Sutton put the Hilltoppers back on the board with a 3-2 decision at 149, cutting the deficit to 12-6, but that was as close as the visitors could get.
Seton Hill put the match on ice with four straight wins, including a pair of major decisions and the forfeit at 174, to take a commanding 29-6 lead with just two bouts remaining.
The Black and Gold didn't go quietly. Logan Kemp, ranked No. 12 in the nation at 197 pounds, scored a 5-3 decision against Jacob Temple and Ronnie D'Amico, WLU's 285-pounder, muscled out a 4-1 win against Jody Crouse to close out the match on a winning note.
West Liberty returns home to host Shippensburg on Saturday in a 2 p.m. dual at the ASRC.
