WVU Wrestling at Virginia Duals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (January 16, 2000) -- The West Virginia University wrestling team earned a split in the two-day Virginia Duals held Friday and Saturday at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Va.

On Friday, the Mountaineers fell to Indiana, 38-8 before defeating Buffalo, 19-16 in the first round of consolations. West Virginia also split matches on Saturday, defeating Kent, 22-21 before losing to No. 20-ranked Wisconsin, 28-9.

Joe Carr (157-pounds) went a perfect 4-0 for the weekend to improve his overall record to15-4. Freshman Greg Jones won all three of his matches tom increase his spotless record to 11-0 at 174.

No. 2-ranked Ryan Kehler, meanwhile, dropped two matches on Friday before coming back to post victories against Kent and Wisconsin on Saturday.

Kehler's pin of Kent's Jim Swettern gave West Virginia the six points it needed to pull out a come-from-behind, 22-21 decision over the Golden Flashes in the final contest of the match. Kehler's eighth pin of the season moves him into a tie with six others for fourth on the WVU single season pin list.

West Virginia, now 3-3, is back in action at Bloomsburg on Sunday, Jan. 21.
