GRAPPLERS EARN SPLIT AT SUN DEVIL DUALS
Tempe, Ariz (January 4,2004) - The West Virginia University wrestling team split a
pair of dual meet matches at the Sun Devil Wrestling Duals inside Wells Fargo Arena on
Sunday.
The No. 12 ranked Mountaineers (1-1, 0-0) opened the dual season with a victory over
the Stanford Cardinal of the Pac-10 Conference.
A highly anticipated match against the second ranked team in the country, Iowa Sate, did
not take place. In the afternoon session, the Mountaineers fell in the final match to No. 8
Missouri.
"We wrestled pretty well today," said head coach Craig Turnbull. "We were able to win
some 50-50 matches which is very encouraging. We held the lead going into the final match
against Missouri without two of our top wrestlers. Overall, I’m pretty happy with how we
competed."
The Sun Devil WrastIing Duals was the first dual meet cornpetitinn of the year for West Virginia.
This year’s field also included American, Cal Poly, Embry-Riddle and host Arizona State.
West Virginia next wrestles at home against Big Ten power and No. 13 ranked Penn State
